Most of it is "muh nostalgia" or royalty free orchestral music. Only good VGM i know of is Doom 2016 and Mirror's Edge series soundtrack.

I don't score it very high but it has its place. It's difficult to play vidya to more conventional stuff when you keep getting distracted by the music, so VGM'S simplicity can be an asset.

I'm in the odd position of having had no real interest at all in music until the age of 17

As a teen I was an autistic fucknugget and listened pretty much exclusively to nobuo uematsu and shoji meguro. thinking about it now it's obvious that a lot of my taste comes from this - hard rawk, power pop, prog, 90s techno and house, ambient... the seeds for a lot of my music taste - at least the stuff that I started out listening to - can probably be found by just playing ff7-10, SMT nocturne and the DDS games
