Alright Sup Forums, for once in your goddamn life give me an answer. Anyone smart out there? Trying to figure out what process made this rock. I found it years ago in a river bed in northeastern Kansas. The lighter part is composed of small shells and is much more abrasive. The darker part is much harder and smoother. Any ideas?

Volcanic rock on the inside and sedimentary on the out. Probably went sedimentary, volcano (magma) then sedimentary ontop

Are you sure it isn't just a shit from a stone troll?

Even with the wrap around? Is it volcanic pushing into sediments?

I would say it's a geode, but you lost me with the shells.

The center looks like quartz so it could be a geode

Might be the edge of the flow, or it could be a vertical thing where the magma pushed into a crevice

No, it was a large area of crumbling rocks in a low river bank outside of Ft. Riley, KS. No way it's a troll

My guess would be an igneous/metamorphic stone got buried by sediment that later became a layer of sedimentary stone. The layer eventually broke up exposing that cool rock you got there.

This.

I'm a geology student at UT Knoxville.

it's just a plain old sedimentary rock, trust me i'm a geologist.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. This wasn't a small find, they were all over the place there. I'm now wondering how old it is.

Think how a sedimentary rock forms. Particles of sand, critters, et cetera compact over time. So now think what would happen if there was a large chunk of rock somehow caught in there in the process.

Looks like you have some sort of Flint or chert there, coated in your pretty standard microfossil conglomerate.

>KSfag/Rock nerd

Whereabouts in Ft Riley did you find it?

Geology student here, that looks to be a fossilized nigger penis, look at the shape. my guess is that he was trying to fuck a river bed but drowned in the process, niggers weren't very smart back then.. come to think of it they aren't very smart now.

Thirded

I'm born and raised in Kasnas. We have rocks like that all over the place. This area used to be at the bottom of the sea. Limestone rocks with sea shells in them are a dime a dozen.

The house I grew up in had a limestone wall around the perimeter of the property and basically every single stone in the wall had sea shells in it.

This is something I haven't thought of. I'll look into it. 'preciate it

I´t can´t be an igneous stone in the center, its like a crystal, igneous stones usually are rougher.

What part of the U.S. is kansas located?

pretty much the exact middle

You know where the River Walk is? When the trail takes a sharp right along the river back towards post, follow it until to find an easy way down to the river. You'll find the same rocks I'm talking about

Dead center, geometrically.

Photosynthesis

Bout tree fiddy

wtf why doesn't it have a coast???? i thought all states would have a coast

It looks like a dick

Do you have any idea how big the USA is? Kansas alone is almost the size of the entire UK...

Kansas 82,000 square miles
UK 94,000 square miles

Been there. What you found is from something called the Wreford Limestone formation.

I guess I just dont understand the hard solid surrounded by the course abrasive (sorry smart people, I'm in the Infantry, that's the best you get)

Nice. I'll look that up, thank you

So to answer your question, it's a Permian layer. Anywhere from 250-300million years.

...

You can do some amazing fossil hunting on the side of any random highway in Kansas. They cut through the hills so the road can remain flat. Just park your car and bring a hammer and start chipping away at the side of the cliff. Only takes like 5 minutes to find cool sea fossils. They are literally everywhere here.

I live in Lawrence KS but grew up in Salina KS which is about a 2 hour drive west. I probably pass 50 spots where the road is cut through the side of hill like what is in this picture on my drive home to see my parents.

Now THAT is cool. I'm going to confirm that, but I'm also going to just believe that figure. I know it's not worth anything really, I just like learning about thing that have existed that long. Thanks all

Not a problem. Are you stationed at that fort? I'm stationed elsewhere, but returning home to KS in August. Would be happy to geologically show you around.

>Pic related.
Just a VERY small portion of my collection

Not anymore man, I was for a couple years. I'm in Georgia now and I took this piece with me. Just found it again and wondering about it

Oh gotcha. I'm in Mississippi at them moment. DD-214 come August

Petrified dinosaur shat

> confirmed.. I see a peanut

How come no one mentioned Thunderegg...?

>Oregonfag here

That long piece might be a yheti dick

Nice collection OP. I have a free miners licence and that stone looks like quartz or calcite in the center and maybe white quartz on the outside. Could you take a better picture of the outer layer and inner I could see clearly? If it is quartz then I would guess that it's a peice of a vein that was eroded from a larger portion of softer bedrock and tumbled in water to give it the rounded outer shape. I don't think the North American glaciers pushed down as far as you live but it could very well be a peice that has slowly made its way down from up north and be an original peice of glacial till
>copper deposit I found

Jealous of that collection though. KS was always really interims to me, especially the freeways. As flat and borring as it seemed, you could always just look at whatever hill the road was cutting though and see millions of years just sitting there. I loved that

Ancient alien suppository

Fuck yeah, Oregonite here too

Geologist here

Looks like a geode that became totally saturated in water, this instead of forming crystal faces like a normal geode it just filled in

Because it's sedimentary. Thundereggs are pretty much exclusively agates. You can find some in Kansas, but usually further west, near the smoky hills chalk formations

Ordinary river rock with an accumulation of aquatic life on it.

This is how coral reefs start.

That's a dinosaur cum ball, frozen for all of time.

I'm glad to see that this place still has the random conglomerate of worthless shit interposed with actual good info. I appreciate it

Yeah, northwestern kansas is huge for rocks, especially fossils. Found almsot an entire Xiphactinus, a large portion of a plesiosaur, and one of three Ptychodis Mamilaris sets in the world. One from AUS(3 teeth), one in US(2) and then the one my father and I found... 60+teeth ;)

That very well may be the case.

You spelled cocks wrong

GOD MADE IT

:)

Please elaborate. Some anons have posted it looks like quartz (and I would agree) in the center which would fit the definition of a thunderegg.

OP's pic is blurry as shit, though. And I'm far from a geologist.

pretty cool thread, Its amazing how Sup Forums does have real deal specialists in crazy fields that just happen to help out a random poster.

also the fossilized dick jokes, I like them too.

>I saw a thread about nuclear reactor engineers talking shit about each other type of designs.

chert in a limestone matrix. Sedimentary stuff

Google images search 'chert'. It's not quartz.

They got my ass till '20 battle. I will never reup. What the actual fuck was i thinking?two years into my 8.

Worlds first butt plug

here's another

August'll be five. Navy.

are you actually fucking retarded.

Quartz doesn't fracture that way.

Still not seeing a difference... Interwebs search shows chert is a form of "microcrystalline varieties of quartz." It looks like dirty quartz to me.

Not trying to be dick, trying to learn something here.

Let me elaborate on my original question; if it did not contain silica as the stuff in the middle, it would not be considered agate, and therefore not a thundergg, right?

Army. I almost went squid, but i had a gf of two years. So, i decided army because both parents were prior service (army/usmc). So, i just stuck with what i knew. Two years later, had i know the bitch would leave for jodie, and take my son, i would have dropped her like a hot rock and sail everywhere. Noooooo, i wanted to cater to dependa. My co won't release me for active, because i know my job too well, and service numbers are at an all time low.

the "roughness" as you say has to do with the rate at which it cooled.

Correct.

I found a thunderegg too

Cumball!!!!

Looks like a dud geode.

Petrified archeopterex pussy.

Can I jizz on ur rock OP?
