was trying to indicate, was that a common use of square brackets is to indicate the addition of words to a quotation for clarity. Thus, he wanted to know why the hell Mr. Moranis would say "the quality of was just not there", which is a very awkward fragment.

However, that poster was not aware of the occasional usage of square brackets to not only add words, but replace an existing pronoun from the original quotation.
