If you think so you literally have no taste

I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and surprised by how unremarkable it is. Not even one of the best films of the nineties let alone of all time

define good

the VERY opposite of BAD

define bad

This

Why's that?

Well I disagree

This basically: Unpleasant, unenjoyable, not desirable. So therefore "good" means pleasant, enjoyable, and desirable. Happy now?

the VERY opposite of GOOD

you are not very clever are you

It's actually my favorite but I don't think it's possible to determine quality with enough exactness to declare a "best" movie of all time, nor would it be useful to do so. I mean, it's not like you can only choose to watch one movie so you have to make sure you pick the best one.

I dunno if its one of the best

but it has one of the most sexually satisfying endings in a movie ever

No and not even close

Boring and not thought provoking. Predictable schlock that you get nothing from.

it's a well shot middlebrow movie that gives the impression that it knows something real about life. you watch it and nod thinking "yeah, this is prison alright" when you actually have no idea what prison is like. it's corny yet feeling kinda authoritative like a good will hunting monologue

Well it's not exact is it. It's a purely subjective question. But yes I would also say it's my favourite.

It's not just the ending though... it's the whole movie. Survival, friendship, making it through tough times, enduring terrible shit, sticking it to authority, winning in the end. The movie's got it all.

Why?

Well Shawshank is not that

Doesn't make Top 200 of anyone serious.
It's an excellent film, of course.

It's also not even the best film of that year. Pulp Fiction beats it IMO.

Fantastic movie, my personal favorite.

I love the soundtrack too, it fits in so perfectly with each scene in the movie, especially the bleak overhead shot of the prison as Andy arrives.

>gives the impression that it knows something real about life.
That's the point, it resonates with people, that's why it's so well loved. If it didn't have a message about life that people understood then it wouldn't be popular.

Also, I don't think the depiction of prison is the most controversial thing about the movie. Prison doesn't really matter that much, because the movie is really about a man fighting against terrible odds, never giving in, and overcoming them. You could tell the same story about a man who loses his business and has to work his way back up from the very bottom.

Okay what would be in that top 200 then?

>Pulp Fiction
Lame as fuck

The soundtrack is indeed very good, the main theme that you hear throughout the movie is awesome (especially when Andy gets out of the shit tube... great moment)

What was the twist again?

Currently first movie that comes to mind when I think about it.

It puts me in the happiest mood after watching.

Are you saying every movie needs a twist? Anyway, Shawshank does have a twist: you find out he's been digging that tunnel out of his cell the whole time

Exactly, it's a feel good movie. It's not one of these modern cucky "HUH REALLY MAKES YOU THINK" pieces of garbage, it's a proper fucking movie about what it is to be a man on this Earth.

There are several '94 movies better than Shawshank, not just Pulp Fiction.

Ed Wood, New Nightmare, Drunken Master II, Leon the Professional, Chungking Express, hell even Forrest Gump is better

Haven't even heard of half of those, why exactly are they better than Shawshank?

Or to put it the most logical way, why don't you like Shawshank?

>"Haven't even heard of half of those"
>not even heard
That's what I expect from the IMDB crowd. You don't even deserve Shawshank

You didn't answer the question.

The anime was better

>anime

Sorry, this isn't the friendless virgin board.

smdh pham

Eat shit, retard. And don't pretend you're interested in discussions, fuckink low IQ

>imbd #1
>reddit

And yet you can't give a simple answer to the question of what you don't like about it

You do know that announcing reports is a bannable offence right?

Also what exactly about this thread is reportable?

...

What a fantastic argument, you've really won me over

Have you seen any film outside of imdb's top 250?

>this isn't the friendless virgin board
>he says on Sup Forums

>New Nightmare
>Better than Shawshank

Wew lad

normie meme

Probably yes.

Are you going to tell me why you dislike Shawshank or not?

Ah I see so it's a "Sup Forums hates everything popular" episode... AGAIN

...

I thought it was just good, but not even close to being great. Too sentimental and kid friendly.

You realize no serious film critics put Shawshank Redemption in their best films of all time lists, correct?

Try to be more of a rabbit with your posts. Fags like you, as said, don't even deserve TSR

No, not even close. It's got a fantastic story and great acting and I enjoy it a lot personally, but if you want to talk about best movies of all time it needs a lot more than that. It doesn't bring anything new to the table from a filmmaking or cinematography perspective, nor is it really any deeper than a great story about a guy's resiliency amidst hardship. It's pretty surface level.

Is that supposed to be an argument? What argument is it?

It's powerful mate. It's not like it's girly sentimental. Shawshank is a man's film, it's about a man's solitude and his fight for his freedom, his trials and tribulations. And the man succeeds in overcoming his obstacles and defeating his enemies. If that doesn't appeal to you then I guess you must be a faggot.

Why on God's green Earth do you think I give a flying fuck what a "serious film critic" thinks?

So at least you're saying you think it's a good movie if you think I don't deserve it?

Okay so what would be your best movie of all time then (or one of them)?
>It doesn't bring anything new to the table from a filmmaking or cinematography perspective
Why the flying fuck does a movie have to do that shit to be good?

I'm sure there are a fuckton of movies that have brought new things to the table from those technical perspectives, but they were shit, unenjoyable borefests to watch. Ergo, not good movies. Think of Avatar, that brought new techniques to filmmaking didn't it? But it wasn't the fucking best movie of all time because the story was a cheaper worse version of Pocahontas and the characters were just dumb

>nor is it really any deeper than a great story about a guy's resiliency amidst hardship. It's pretty surface level.
What the flying fuck is "surface level"? What does a movie have to do to get beyond this "surface level"?

By the way, some arthouse indie flick that has "levels of meaning" will never, EVER be the best movie of all time. The best movie of all time is something that the majority of people can agree on. 99% of people are never going to agree to the fact that some pretentious arthouse shit is "the best movie" because pretentious arthouse shit is not enjoyable to watch (unless you're a pretentious arthouse shitter, I guess)

Pretty much

No but very good. Top 100

Holy macaroni, you're really unironically the prototypical 'IMDB film buff'. Kill yourself, embryo

>>/reddit/

>pretentious
>borefests
>arthouse shit
>it's a man's film, you faggot
It's a funny mix of Sup Forums, Sup Forums and the upvote site. I hope you're not baiting, it would take away much of the fun

>bfi.org.uk/news/50-greatest-films-all-time

I don't see Shawshank on this list, voted by 846 critics.

Not an argument

Also not an argument

Sorry that I'm a normalfag that has friends and a life. Sorry that it rustles you that liking arthouse shit a) makes you a homosexual and b) basically guarantees you will never have normal friends and/or a girlfriend

The question I asked was "Why on God's green Earth do you think I give a flying fuck what a "serious film critic" thinks?", but hey ho, I guess I'll now pose a new question

Are you really so utterly downright pathetic that you have to read what SOMEBODY ELSE THINKS and you have to RABBIT THAT OPINION AS YOUR OWN, because you're so fucking insecure, pathetic, ball-less, spineless, and homosexual, that you can't have your own opinions?

Is that seriously what you're saying?

>DUDE I HATE LE CRITICS LMAO. I MEAN FORM YOUR OWN OPINION YOU SHEEP. I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ALL THAT

Tell me another, tourist. It's somewhat rare when they come this much unself-aware, so continue.

>>>/imdb/

of course

I don't make a point about having my own opinions, I just watch whatever fucking movies I like or want to watch. I don't defer to another authority that deems for me what I should and shouldn't watch, in order to try and appear "cool" and "hip" and "with it" and "artisan" to other people. Which I can assume is the only reason why you give such importance to the views of """""""""""""""""""""critics"""""""""""""""""""""""? The very same """"""""""""""""""""""""""critics"""""""""""""""""""""""""" that consistently push left-wing social engineering garbage, might I add.

This place is as bad as Sup Forums isn't it. I thought it was good, with the Baneposting and the "body of work" threads and the Sopranos memes. But a lot of you are just as bad as Sup Forums homosexuals aren't you? I bet you listen to Death Grips too because you think it's going to make Chads and Staceys fear and respect you for being so goddamn alternative.

Interstellar is the best movie of all time. And I'm dead serious.

>Sorry, this isn't the friendless virgin board.
>he posted unironically on fa/tv/irgin

Forcing on your hand now a bit now. Too easily detectable as satire.

Is it the only movie you've ever seen?

Its not even nolan's best movie of all time

It's not satire mate

Fucking hell it's so easy to troll Sup Forums

no, i can't name the best movie of all time but I can come up with a number of movies that are better. godfather, alien, raging bull, fellowship and silence of the lambs

please stop trying so hard, its embarrassing

3/5

Yes, it is

which 3?

first 3 are all better than shawshank

No, but it's pretty comfy.

me on the left

>Fucking hell it's so easy to troll reddit

Irish, huh?

It's not even the best movie starring Robbins and Freeman

How bad is it that the only reason I watched this was because of puff puff pass? Loved it though and have seen it several times. Always rage so much at that greaser kid getting capped

Red was imaginary. Andy made him up because all the real black people just ass blasted him daily and he needed a friend
