was almost 50 million at 4 friday and it was 45 million at 1am saturday
>Yes, that three-day is a record for director Paul Feig and star Melissa McCarthy (easily beating the $39.1M opening of their B.O. high The Heat), however, considering what Ghostbusters cost at $144M after rebates (and before an estimated $100M-plus global P&A), a number of rival sources consider anything in the $40M range to be a mediocre start for this reboot. Anything north of $50M is ideally safer.

As opening day approaches, Feig can’t help but think about the stakes of making a $150 million movie. “A movie like this has to at least get to like $500 million worldwide, and that’s probably low,” he says. “But the thing I care about most is the industry looking for an excuse to say, ‘See, a tentpole can’t be carried by female leads’” — three of whom are over 40. “I cashed in all my chips,” he says. “I had to use every chip to make this happen. And if this doesn’t work, I will probably have to go back to movie jail.”
Ayden Young
the real killer will be the second week drop
Jason Jenkins
Who the fuck watched the heat?
Jeremiah Robinson
why does this faggot keep shoving his disgusting fat ass wife into movies
Aaron Cook
i can't fucking wait
Austin Jackson
An all female cast could have worked if they approached it the right way and weren't completely fucking obnoxious about it.
The main cast could have had their daughters or grand daughters take over the family business or some shit. Make it a movie about passing the torch.
Instead the marketing has been completely centered about "WE'RE WOMEN! WE'RE STRONG! SEE MEN! :^ )"
Kayden Bailey
china will save it you sexist fucks
Luis Rodriguez

Adrian Hughes
>A movie like this has to at least get to like $500 million worldwide
Must be all the extra $350 million for marketing
Gabriel Harris

Leo Adams
>I don't know how the box office works >I think studios get 100% back
Nathaniel Sanchez
Last I checked Ghostbusters 2016 will not be in China at all. Depending on what you read/listen to, it's either because the movie is too sacrilegious with its treatment of the dead, China just wants to screw with Sony, or China has a hard limit on foreign movies entering their country per year and chose this one to exclude.
Elijah Ortiz
China has cultural taboos against stuff related to the dead. Remember how all the skeletons were removed from the Chinese release of WoW?
Jordan Fisher
It's more than likely a three way win win for China.
They get to keep religious bullshit out of their theaters; shit on the nips who raped their grandparents; and don't have to waste one of their slots on a shitty western movie
Easton Mitchell
has anybody actually seen the china box office this year?
yeah this is good money for a foreign market but only warcraft was saved by China
Logan Parker
>cultural Political. Commies dont want people to believe in afterlife.
John Price
i fucking love how the media are trying really really hard not to offend this movie in any possible way, while they are free to shit on any other movie no matter how much it makes
Jordan Hughes
Ballbusters porn parody when?
Angel Harris
>the mermaid
Sebastian Flores
A reminder that studios only get 25% of cash made in China.
Xavier Anderson
Honestly it's probably more bad timing than anything. I don't think the people they alienated are truly enough to bust the box office, if they had an area of weak competition they could've squeaked out a profit. But in this they're probably going to get the backhand of Pets, then they're going to get the full brunt of Star Trek and Ice Age. I mean mediocre blockbusters that alienate oldschool fanboys have done well before, so I don't see them being any worse for wear here. Only real issue is they pushed the propaganda angle hard, and China only likes THEIR propaganda.
Jordan Brooks
They didn't even bother applying to show in China - they knew there was no way around the ghost thing in this one
Zachary Ward
Netflix should pick it up. They did Wet Hot American Summer reunion
Christopher King
This is the shittiest opening weekend for movies I've seen in a long time.
Dylan Jenkins
>Marketing is free and companies take 100% of the box office sales Glad to have you here to help us out user.
Xavier Ross
From that list, it looks like it saved apocalypse from embarrassment, outright guaranteed a third now you see me movie(it opened to 40m+, twice the us opening) and gave a good chunk of change to the revenant, independence day, angry birds, jungle book, civil war, zootopia and a few other movies that didn't make that list like american ultra
Leo Adams
>China >only 25%
Jacob Ross
It's literally up to suicide squad to save this summer with its projected $120m opening
Henry Walker
China is too scared of ghosts to save it
Christian Brown
>if this doesn’t work, I will probably have to go back to movie jail
What did he mean by this?
On another note, good. Nobody else is casting McCarthys fat ass
Ian Baker
Wouldn't 44.5m be an enormous flop given that budget? Mediocre sounds very generous. There's no way this breaks 10m any weekend beyond opening.
bridesmaids 2 spy 2 (I actually want this though tbqf)
Jacob Hall
They asked for this
Isaac Collins
some chinese flick
Alexander Wood
I don't think it has a hope in hell to make an ROI on the entire budget.
Can it at least make back its production budget?
Liam Clark
This never gets old ahaha
Jason Jenkins
And Ice Age. It can't even take 2...they might not even be able to take 3. China makes their own movies too.
Samuel Young
star trek(which is getting good social media buzz) and suicide squad(most talked about movie on social media this year and tracking for over $120m)) not long afterwards, this movie wont even have a month to take in money before being removed so there's enough screens for suicide squad
In USA studios get to be a lot more picky and take a lot more cash.
Leo Powell
Do Chinese people not know they all have skellingtons?
Wyatt Sanchez
but the Chinese banned Ghostbusters
Robert Green
the first chink film to hit $500m domestic there, would have boosted chinas box office to have been bigger than americas in the first half of the year if bvs, civil war and deadpool all hadn't come out so close to each other
Christopher Hernandez
cultural too, even their traditional version of ghosts, jiangshi, are more like zombies than actual ghosts
Justin Kelly
Simon Chow film. Its meant to be great.
Luis Martinez
kek
Studios only receive a small percentage of what their films make in China, China doesn't care about films starring white and black women and what's more the fucking thing will probably be denied screening in China.
Ethan King
depends on the multiplier ghostbusters ends up happening and the 2nd week drop
garbage like tammy had a 3.9x multiplier
>Bridesmaids (6.5x), The Heat (4x), Tammy (3.9x), and Spy (3.8M)
that means opening weekend # x 6.5 or 4 or 3.9 or 3.8
so if this opens up at 44.5 million and gets a 3.5 multiplier that = 155 million domestic
Jordan Lopez
Like calling Tarzan waycissss?
James Barnes
I watched Spy on an international flight, about 20 minutes in and 42 fat jokes later, I was praying for a skyscraper.
Colton Gonzalez
This is hilarious >Sup Forums babbies pretending they're Sup Forums >Sup Forums babbies pretending they weren't waiting all fucking week for this to be rotten >Sup Forums babbies ignoring this morning and their countdown to it being blown out by critics >Sup Forums babbies are now crying check the top critics >Sup Forums babbies are now saying imdb matters >Sup Forums babbies are now trying to revision what they said >Sup Forums babbies are now clinging to box office numbers This literally can't get any worse for them
Whats the next flavor of the month flick coming out? Suicide Squad??
Jackson Garcia
He made "Freaks And Geeks"? No wonder it is shit.
Mason Bennett
Ghostbusters needs to be carried entierly by domestic. All of those women are literally who outside of USA and SJW isn't as vocal about it either.
Brayden Price
Just leave Amy. It's over. You lost.
Hudson Adams
But movie jail? What about movie jail? Does that mean future projects will be canned?
Ryan Hall
Delicious
Jaxon Cooper
I could be convinced to see this.
Jack Bailey
what a disaster
Easton Flores
China's law prohibiting depictions of stuff related to cults/ghosts/whatever isn't why they turned it down. Their official explanation was just that they didn't think Chinese audiences would be interested by it because the first two Ghostbusters never came to China either and they didn't see Chinese audiences liking this one. They could've blamed it on ghosts, but instead they just came out and said it had zero appeal to the Chinese.
Anthony Rogers
It won't be a bomb that can't cover the cost of the budget, but will it realistically even reach 225 million?
Andrew Price
Yeah, it's going to fade into obscurity within two weeks.
Nicholas Rivera
Chinese would probably get triggered by the China Delivery guy being Paki
Wyatt Peterson
I remember my theater being less than half full for it, and at the very end only one person clapped.
Thomas Sanders
it just means he'll be forced to do sequels/small-mid budget chick flicks until he earns enough good boy points to do another passion project
at least this means sadfu is guaranteed work
Jace Anderson
REMINDER THAT AMERICAN BOX OFFICE IS COMPLETE SHIT THIS YEAR!!
Wyatt Johnson
Just looked up the largest cinema in Scandinavia and on the first showing the day it premieres only 15/421 seats reserved lmao
Isaiah Cook
Why do normies never talk about their falcons
Parker Thomas
I did my mysoggykneest duty and tied up every woman I knew for opening day of this movie so it would fail.
Jeremiah Anderson
>making excuses this hard for your movie Being a Sony exec must be hell
Nolan Nelson
Go back to ribbit
Josiah Allen
I fucking hate that this isn't opening in all foreign markets at the same time because they are going to say
>wait for ALL foreign markets!!
Last fucking release date is in late august
Jaxon Ramirez
It made 17 million on opening night
It is rare for any movie that makes this much to gross even 200 million. This kind of opening is indicative of movies that have 50 million budgets and gross around 120 million total after 10 years
Confirmed flop media in denial
Zachary Watson
>Not even the cucks want to see it
Ian Evans
I'd take Sup Forums over /twitter/ any day. Although I'd ideally prefer neither. So please leave too.
Julian Powell
This movie MUST fail. If it's successful, a whole new trend of feminist remakes will start. The future of movies depends on its failure.
Brandon Hughes
>they're here right now too I can't stop laughing
Imagine trying to pretend you're Sup Forums this hard, but never making the cut
Landon Evans
Six movies broke three hundred million. That's better than most years.
Nicholas Gomez
They only halfway decent blockbuster flick on that list is the Divergent movie
Julian Taylor
I can't see this making any money outside of the US. 100 million total, if they're lucky.
Juan Bennett
Warcraft didn't hit top 20? I thought it was legitimately pretty good
Elijah Wright
It's funny to me how Finding Dory has grossed over $100 million more domestic than Zootopia yet has made over $300 million less than Zootopia worldwide.
I liked Finding Dory more than Zootopia personally
Easton Clark
It probably won't "fail", but it's not because of the agenda. If anything, women are going to make an effort to go see it because of that. It'll fail because there's ZERO reason for it to exist and nobody asked for it.
Noah Brooks
That shit was the worst in the series, and the series is pretty bad to begin with.
Jackson Allen
the biggest problem is that ghostbusters isn't a beloved brand in europe or asia like it is in america, so with no star power to back it up besides hemsworth who keeps finding himself in flops it doesn't have anything going for it
