Great production, lyrics often too on-the-nose and not a lot of variety in mood but March of the Pigs, Closer, and Hurt are god tier.

Great beeps and boops but the lyrics really fuck my mood

As above user said.. Great production. Back in the day it was the most techno music we had in mainstream usa.

Just don't get caught in the snare

"Ohhh everything he does post TDS sucks, why doesn't he do another TDS, Oh X doesn't hold a candle to TDS etc"

You might say that you will make him Hurt.

I admire his commitment to not relenting on the lyrical content. Most would pull back, but he didn't flinch one fucking moment and just kept hammering misery for over an hour straight.

And just when you think he can't reach the bottom of the miserable Spiral, he takes it further. Jesus Christ. The Becoming is probably the single greatest example of Manic depression put into a mainstream album.

>Your god is dead and no one cares
>If there is a hell I'll see you there
woah...deep...

I'll always love this. The amount of time I spent analyzing it and how it has helped me through more difficult times gives it a comfortable spot in my top five.

Mr.Self Destruct wasn't set up to be a clever protagionist, but the edgiest one, and in the end he paid for it with suffering and death.

yeah im just memeing, the album is great

ill always associate this album with my mom yelling at me circa 1999 after Columbine happened and Nine Inch Nails being one of the bands dylan and eric listened to. she stopped paying for dial up because she saw i used it to play Quakeworld and (oddly enough) didnt let me watch Daria any more.
i moved out like 6 months later. in retrospect its painful to think about NIN and 1999, my father died earlier in 98 and i listened to this album nonstop then.

however everything said, its probably in the top 10 mainstream albums of the 90s

Classic

"The Downward Spiral" is number 3 in my top 5 favorite albums, behind "In the Wee Small Hours" by Frank Sinatra, and "The Wall" by Pink Floyd. i relate to a lot of the lyrics, especially in "The Becoming". great production, great instrumentation, great vocals, and, above all else, great lyrics. definitely one of the greatest albums of all time.

I like it. But I'm not gonna lie, I was a little disappointed when it first came out.
I'm a a huge fan of Pretty Hate Machine and The Fragile, and The Downward Spiral is good... but it is a messy, unfocused, and overly eager transitional album.
This is weighed against Trent's other albums, mind you. So in all seriousness, it's really good.

I always considered broken to be the messy transitional album (despite wish being an all time classic)
The fragile is great but it was overly ambitious and lacking direction, at least compared to most other experimental rock albums circa 99

The Downward Spiral has a clear focus thanks to its concept, imho.

>When the title track kicks in

That's some fucked up shit.

It's a very archetypal album. I wonder how much of it's genius was completely subconscious on Reznor's part.

These Trent memes always make me cringe because they're so bad that they're good

just like his songwriting

I'd say it has his best lyrics after TDS, they're actually relatable for the non-depressed.

Not The Actual Events has amazing lyrics too, Branches/Bones is perfect for people who's depression is in a stage they feel disconnected from the world and feel great sense of apathy thanks to it.

It is also his most richest and most layered work since The Fragile.

Lyrics are a little cringe but you just have to take it with a grain of salt I think the phrase is
Wonderful album though

Never thought that the lyrics are really edgy to be honest, maybe a little bit in heresy but maybe it's just because talking shit about religion and god isn't shocking as it was in the 90'

Anyway, a masterpiece imo, rest of his albums are also very good.

I'm depressed and Trent's lyrics are dogshit

I have depression, Trent's lyrics are accurate. The Becoming is the perfect way to describe the feeling.

Ruiner is a fucking banger

Hurt is one of the best rock songs of the 90s. It's good. Hurt, Mr. Self Destruct, and Closer are god tier

Yes, tied with Reptile it's the best track.

>Never plays Ruiner live
>Gets bored
>Decides to play Downward Sprial Live from beginning to end
>Ruiner included

That one fan screaming"OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD"

Best concert feels coming through.

Ruiner was the best part of the whole thing.

I love the new Trent playing these old tracks.

His voice has grown so fucking manly it adds a whole new layer to them.

His performance of Ruiner was fucking amazing here. This whole tour, fuck, I am so sad I wasn't on it

It's my favorite album. Only complaint though is Trent's nasally vocals are somewhat irritating after a while.

Less nasily, more growly

Is it possible to edit out the crowd chatter somehow? I'd love for the band's volume to be highlighted.

Yeah, that would be something to look into. Crowds are great, but the talking... ugh. When Hurt comes on, some guy sings Hurt with a new country twang

Jesus fucking christ that's amazing

>The one fan realizing that TDS is being played from start to finish by Heresy.

There are multiple out-takes of the recording. There is a fan NIN website which saves the recordings of live shows.

There is another one, where certain songs sound better with less crowd chatter, depends on which song, some worse some better.

High quality here of the tour.

Listening to it now for the first time in years (I played it a lot as a teen) and holy shit it's like meeting an old friend.

I get my sadcore from Leonard Cohen these days because he's got a more optimistic outlook while still being good depression music, but TDS will always have a special place in my heart.

Still a really fucking good sounding album too.

Imagine how that realization would feel

God fucking damn

In different takes you can hear the crowd scream at other guys to "STOP FUCKING CLAPPING" while Hurt is playing.

Okay, Crowds can be awful

"HEAD LIKE A HOLE!"

youtube.com/watch?v=kA_-Y_hH0-g

Damn that perfomance of Big Man With A Gun shreds

I sometimes wonder if the reason why Trent wanted to stop touring was in part because of this.

maybe a small bit of it. He was getting married, and probably just wanted to settle down and have some kids and just relax for a bit.

underage

I watched a nearly TDS live (minus 4 songs) in 2007 and it was so fucking great.
It was a fucking amazing performance.
Also I saw The Fragile tour and it was fucking tight, last tour with Robin, Danny and Charlie.
Plus Atari Teenage Riot supporting, back when digital hardcore was fucking brutal.
Those were the days.
