Chinetown is, put simply, a movie that earned its sad ending, rather than taking one on for drama's sake.

This. The movie's structured so well that when I first saw it, my stomach dropped when I saw the final scenes were taking place in Chinatown. I realized that the initially unrelated title was supposed to be ominous when Gittes briefly talke about Chinatown earlier in the movie.
