Anyone with military experience? I have a question

Anyone with military experience? I have a question.

When you're deployed, on base, and can't sleep at night, are you allowed to move around the base? If I'm up at 4 AM, can I just go get a smoke in the courtyard or something? Or am I required to stay in the barracks the whole time?

Doubt it they cant lock you in a room while on your own free time.

Also is your gun "yous" or do you swap gun a lot? who decides what gun youre given? if you sign up to be a sniper is everyone given the exact same standard issue sniper? (Yes i have literally no experience with the military)

im pretty sure you have to be in your designated quarters during sleeping hours

if you were up on the base walking around alone at night, it might look pretty suspicious

Anyone?

yes everyone gets the same equipment depending on their role

Not a milfag but they would give you a standard issue rifle m24 m40a5 etc

Right, thank you.

If your not on duty, you can do and go wherever you like.

depends if you're stationed in a hostile region or not. There is usually a code of conduct. I'm not military but I do write policy. Suppose your in Afghanistan you probably want to be in the armored sleeping barracks anyway, if your stationed in Germany probably not so much.

In hostile region, you have a much more tight schedule then? No lollygagging?

Depends on where you're stationed and what your occupational specialty is. Different locations have different rules and curfews. Some though, smoking is strictly prohibited especially at night due to light discipline (unless you want to have a sniper know where your head is, that shit lights up like a beacon through NVG's)

you would have designated areas that you can be in dependent on base security level at that time.
you may be challenged even there.

security protocols would be different at training bases compared to active bases in a conflict zone. be aware.

That's interesting info. When does a soldier get to smoke, then? Only during the day's breaktimes?

Not sure but i dont think the gun is yours because it is a work item i think, to awnser the second question i think you can choose the model and caliber, you can also customize the gun if you want but it has to be for your specific role. eg. red dot sights are allowed on a sniper because it wouldn't hit anything and long range. I dont have much experience myself so dont quote me on all that it also depends on the country and state/province.
Canadian armed forces here by the way

Multiple years as a contractor in the ME. Once you're off work, your time is pretty much your time. With the occasional field day, or organized pt events, you're free to go up to the green beans or the gym or the DFAC or to the smoke pit or a buddies hooch. No one cares.

Jag håller på att bli tokig.

Depends, but daytime would be the only time to do that for those specific locations. If you're addicted and need that tobacco fix, better start using chew instead.

Thanks for the answers Sup Forumsros.

What if I'm afraid of the dark? Do they allow nightlights?

ex milfag here. You get assigned a weapon and keep track of the serial number. whenever you draw weapons from a vault you must draw the same one. The weapon you carry is determined at your unit. In the canadian forces you are assigned, basically, randomly since were were all trained to use most of the basic weapon systems. If you recieved specialty training in say, support weapons, you may be assigned once of those in addition to your standard service rifle. as for snipers and whatnot, usually you have to be lucky enough (and determined enough) to get through a recce course, and then even luckier to receive sniper training.

If you are serious its called find another line of work, much more to be scared of...

This, unless you're at a training command. Their rules are vastly different from real commands.

if you ask that question, you'll probably be more afraid of your battle buddies than the dark.

Actually not really. With the few exceptions when Seclev was really high like during an assault or during/after a rocket attack, it was never like this. Not even on the FOB's like Salerno or Khost. At ISAF we'd party until 3am in the BatCave area (TS area so mp's couldn't enter) every Thursday. Liquor and all.

There were very few times any of the bases I was on were completely locked down.

there is a smoke pit close to any living area and yes you are aloud to smoke at any hour of the day.

the rifle is assigned to you via serial number and kept in an armory when not deployed or training.

if you consider hurry up and wait no lolligagging

>liquor

Wait, how much drinking is going on base? I had the impression it was forbidden at all times.

It's specific to the role you have. Some units will allow it, others won't. Then again it's been over 10 years since I was last deployed to a hazardous duty area. It might have changed for all i know.

Can I bring my bathmate penis extender?

Yes, you can, actually.

I haven't researched it at all, yet, so I have no idea either.

But it wouldn't surprise me to see drinking on base regardless.

Was Norman a pedo?

Where im at currently, you're only allowed to go to the vending machine or the smoke pits provided by the barracks. Everything else is off limits. It really depends on the chain of command and the rules implemented. Also how close the OOD determines how much you can get away with.

I've seen it, but only on the larger air bases, and it was only the personnel that were stationed there and never went on patrols.

I'm sure they'd have to buy the booze themselves, right?

There is no "standard ration of alcohol" with your MRE anymore, as far as I know.

depends on where you are, who you are with and your position/role
i was a captain with air force and could go around all i wanted as long as we weren't on high alert

Either that or it was mailed to them. Some places sold alcohol at the DFACs but would limit you to 2 drinks per night. Other than that, you can drink all the Beck's non-alcoholic beers you want.

High alert? Ok captain fag. Go steal your valor somewhere else. No O-3 calls themselves a captain, or trolls 4chinz for that matter.

>Beck's non-alcoholic beers

I'd rather swallow the glass bottle around it than the liquid inside.

Thanks for all the info so far, my dude.

>went to pick up a girl for a date when i was 17
>talking to her dad who was a cop while wating for her and notice that same painting on the wall
>i said rockwell was one of my favorite painters
>he says a lot of people that like his paintings are pedos
>Im a fairly talented painter and explained that i merely appreciated his ability to capture expression
>but

mfw he was totally right...

I never drank it, why drink something that would get you dehydrated and taste like piss, and get no benefit from alcohol? Considering that you're only drinking water, Dr Pepper will give you a better rush than anything else (all the soda's are shipped in from other countries that aren't the US, so they all taste funny, except Dr Pepper).

I used to walk around base at night, just try not get noticed too much. If your friendly with the guards it should be no problem, just don't take it to far or start hanging out with people. You can get yourself and others into trouble. Its not a big deal just don't be an idiot. More than likely you'll be too tired to not sleep anyway.

>no O-3 calls themselves a captain
that's true whenever i'm asked what i was while serving i always go O-3, oh you don't know what that is then fuck you and here is a cup full of diarrhea shit to eat.
>trollz
>z
>Z

Glad we agree on that part. Guess the "beer taste" can be used as a placebo for some.

Non-alcoholic beers are getting produced because people buy them, after all.

yep

you sound like a reservist.

When you're getting as tired as you will in basic training, you won't have to worry about not being able to sleep. You're going to instantly pass out at any given opportunity.

It turns out, the best cure for mild insomnia is working hard enough to tire yourself out.

ISAF is a different beast. Most of the larger nations are/were on the base and had their own house that served as an embassy. The French and Germans were allowed to have alcohol on their soil. There was also a bar that served alcohol to those nations that were allowed to drink. Mattis tried to change that, but the other nations refused to capitulate. This was back in 09, I've no idea what ISAF is like now.

I guess we don't utilize our chain of command and ask our Corporal, do we OP?

Just kidding. Depends on where you're at and if it's an active combat zone.

I would ask my Corporal rather than Sup Forums if I was deployed on base, that's for damn sure.

Chuck Norris went to Afghanistan, and he threw a grenade and killed 50 Taliban. Then the grenade exploded.

>your own free time
i'm not sure you understand what the military is

Ohhh I got double dubs, nice.

Anyway, the BatCave was a TS area, so mp's couldn't get in unless someone escorted them, and no one ever would. The foreign members would sneak in their liquor and the rest of us would get someone from the American embassy to buy us our share and have it waiting for us in the BC on Thursday night. Damn those were some fun nights.

fellow can army fag. this pretty much sums it up. also in afghanistan you can do whatever the fuck you want in company outposts, patrol bases or fobs at anytime of night as long as it doesnt endanger you or others. like waving lights around like a fuckhead so the enemy can see you. common sense shit like thag. i used to like sitting outside at 0 darkstupid after sentry and look at the stars with my mnvgs. ive never seen so many in the sky.

Pathetic. Kill yourself loser. Don't pretend to be anything other than a basement dweller in your parents house.

How can you write policy, if you can't even tell the difference between "your" and "you're"?

kekt and rekt

What does TS mean and why can't mp's go there?

Canada doesn't have an army dingus. If a nco heard you call it army, you would be doing mop. We're a force that's armed.

It's possible for user to write policy, they never claimed to be good at it though.

What's a TS area? And an MP for that matter. I'm not familiar with most of the slang yet.

Top Secret

Dude I was on Salerno for a year. It's a dark camp. If you had anything shining other than a red light, you'd get jacked up pretty quick. None of us wanted to get lit up any more than we already did.

Big shout out to those SOFfags who partied all night that one night in the new gym and carpentry area with bright lights shining. Ass holes, our gym got hit soon after.

Transsexual

So Sup Forums is a TS area. Nice.

>fuck off mps

Correct. Top Secret. MP = military police.

Do MPs have much of a presence on base?

kek yeah its getting PC as fuck, combat arms are holding out from being full PC, support trades are pretty bad right now apparently

Absolutely. I can't say much more for OpSec reasons, but yes there are MP's on every base. The larger the base the larger the MP detachment.

thats what i mean you cant be wavin lights and shit around. but if you wanted to walk around the cop, or beat off by some hesco
then it wasnt an issue

Damn, their sole purpose is just to maintain order on base, right? They never fight, do they?

MP means military police

MP's are required to go through Blue Falcon training before their attachment, right?

LOL I just beat off in my hooch. I got really good at being completely quiet at it. I won't lie though, a few times I did it in a Porta potty.

That party was a big stink. Normally SOF doesn't get in any trouble but several did that night andany contractors lost their job. They put us all in danger.

goddamn right bro. i got real good beatin off in the most obscure places

Nope you're typically the first to engage if the base is attacked. I was an MP in the Army before I was a contractor.

Eat a dick. We do our jobs, base security is especially important in Iraq and Afghanistan.

LOL whoops didn't mean to come off so harsh. just busting your chops.

Are MPs hated on base? Or is it just banter.

KEKEKEK

I know, don't worry bout it.

Honestly, I got along well with nearly everyone when I was an MP, but as a contractor I had one experience that changed my opinion of CID forever. So not a huge fan, at least not the ones on Leatherneck.

>I had one experience that changed my opinion of CID forever

Now you're just teasing me. What happened my man?

I really appreciate all the info btw, fascinating stuff.

MP's, much like any other law enforcement agency, will have it's good, and it's bad. Some MP's let it get to their head and are just flat out assholes. Been pulled over by one while I was a designated driver (stateside) and got taken in, even though I blew a 0.00 on the breathalyzer.

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” – Abraham Lincoln

They definitely were assholes.

Sex is illegal in most forward deployed areas. CID ran a sting operation with a girl posing as a girl looking to hook up. They did it on the ME Craigslist actually. My friend got sacked in and went to meet her at the Green Beans, CID tackled him, cuffed and took him in. He hadn't even messed with her. He didn't lose his clearance, or face charges but they forced him to quit. It was fucking bullshit.

I occasionally still post a warning on the Craigslist section to warn others not to fall for it.

us.mil.army/onbase

Feels like they tried to make an example out of someone, no matter who, just to show off that they have the power to do so.

Was it useful though? Did you guys get "extra dutiful" after that event?

I went civilian LE to MP (which is usually the reverse of how most do it) so I already had experience how to deal with certain things and the wisdom of when to be lenient. But I certainly knew my share of ass holes in my MP brigade.

This is shocking. 5 years ago they would never have enforced that.

Yeup that's exactly what they were doing. I was actually on my way out at the time, getting ready to De-mob so I didn't really see if it had lasting effects on base.

nope. one of my buddies didn't have a good opinion of "po-lice" before that, and it only made him hate them even more because he had to pay for a cab instead of having my sober ass drive him back for free. No extra duty was assigned though, they let me go and my PL didn't think it warranted any punishment

In the name of all decent mp's I offer my apologies. Most mp's are just kids given a little bit of power and a lot of responsibility. I actually think they are worse than ass hole cops, because they aren't taught discretionary skills or certain ethics that civ LE's learn.

Alright, thanks for all the info, both of you.

You gave me a lot, so I'll give you some back: I'm not in the military, and I'm not even looking to join. I'm a writer, and I'm following the #1 rule of writing, which is "write what you know".

One plot point of mine involved an ex-military, but I had no detailed knowledge at all about what it's like to be deployed.

You guys' experiences will help paint a realistic picture of deployment, and the relations between different groups on base. I gotta work on the military slang though, that'll be one of the key factors if I want to write those flashback dialogs well.

Thanks again.

Throwawayforb2016ATgmail if you want some more correspondence.

You're welcome btw.

I'll keep it in mind, though maybe I'll just make more threads here and there. It's sometimes better to talk to unsuspecting people about their experiences, rather than waving a metaphorical microphone in front of their mouth.

I actually played D&D with a guy that was working for an edition company, he was, and still is a corrector, and couldn't spell anything correctly. I'm still amazed by it.

The question is , if he really thought that way then why did he have a Rockwell on his wall? Maybe he was making an offer user.

Canadafag here, keep up the good work Sup Forumsro

Perfectly understandable, but I'd be remiss if I didn't offer.
