Early U2 is solid post-punk, The Joshua Tree is a classic rock album, and 90s U2 experimented with influence from MBV and Einsterze Neubauten and electronic music (Passengers is Kid A 5 years before the fact). All hugely acclaimed btw.
It's a shame because U2 were solid from 76 up until 2001 when they became a horrible parody of themselves (with a couple good tracks released on occasion that still pale in comparison to the glory days) and Bono went up his own ass and ruined the band's public image.
That still doesn't negate what they achieved in their prime though.
