People are consuming more media these days you complete and utter retard

And yet the new Ghostbusters did better than the old Ghosbusters did on its opening week.

The original film made almost 10 times its budget, the reboot might not break even.

>it also ended it's run with 295 m global. I don't need a calculator to guess that it's probably around 600 m in today's box office. Ghostbusters 2016 will be lucky to make it to 200 m.

It also spent a shit-ton more on advertising. Still in the red.

Who are you quoting?

The new Ghostbusters also opened in over a thousand extra cinemas domestically you pleb. Not to mention ticket prices are a dollar extra after factoring in inflation

>Well well well if it isn't reddit

>comparing opening numbers for folks decades apart.
Lol. Look at the whole picture retard. LadiesGB won't even make as much as that old film andirector I'm not even talking adjusted numbers.

>Implying it will gross over 680 in totall

it's almost like the landscape of cinema and the role opening weekends play has changed drastically over the course of 30 years

who'd have thunk it

the original Ghostbusters finished its run with 295 mil off a 30 mil budget

adjusted for inflation that's a box office total of: 684 mil

new film cost 150 mil. marketing costs at least double that total. at the end of its run it will be lucky to break even.

it's not a guaranteed flop yet, but it will need to do huge internationally to make any money. and history has repeatedly demonstrated that movies like this typically only perform well domestically.

so... probably a flop. but hardly the only one this summer. we'll have to see how everything shakes out. other losers like Tarzan and ID4:2 may come out looking worse. but they're doing decent business internationally so even that's being optimistic.

Quoting future articles that you'll be crying over. Use your brain. Take into account how the global reception will look and the quality of films being released the next few weeks. How is ghostbusters even going to compete? I

A movie ticket was less than $3.50 in 1984

They spent 100m on marketing.
So 244m used on the film.

well, I didn't like it so that means it flopped

It also likely won't break even , so there's that.

I applaud your naiveté and ineducation
remember: vote trump

How can people say John Carter flopped? It made 3 times more in it's opening week than the movie Jaws, which was the first hollywood blockbuster!

Sup Forums and manbabies BTFO yet again

Who isnt voting trump at this point besides sjw faggots?

>more than $100 million
>more

studios dont reveal overall marketing costs for their films. the article is lowballing a safe estimate based on conventional wisdom for what it costs to market a big budget summer release. at least 100 mil on marketing is guaranteed, so you can write that number as fact without it becoming shitty speculative journalism. realistically though the number is probably well over 150 mil.

plus there's a ton of other additional costs that factor in. that's why a movie needs to at least triple its budget to see any significant return on investment.

(many also rely heavily on profits from toys and shit, which is why a lesser Pixar success like Cars got a sequel. the toys sold like crazy. Ghostbusters toys, meanwhile, were already on clearance week of release. so... not a great sign on that front either.)

[Nervousness intensifies]

oh how the turned tables have

>implying this whole project wasn't some money laundering operation in the first place
Let's be real here. No executive can be this stupid and pay so much money for such a shitty idea

Hasn't the price of a movie ticket risen much faster than the rate of inflation?

i cant tell if this is just like a random tangent asked out of curiosity or if you think the question actually pertains to the topic at hand

they're not counting tickets sold. they're counting the money made from bought tickets.

If tickets cost significantly more then you need to sell fewer of them to make the sequel a "success"

>UK numbers still not being released

Did it really do that bad over there?

sure... tons more people turned out for individual films pre-80s/90s, allowing them to gross a fuckload despite tickets being way cheaper. certain movies became must-see cultural events and continued their theatrical runs for a very long time, like the original Ghostbusters. that very rarely happens anymore, unless James Cameron's name is on it.

still not clear on why you're focused on this though, in terms of how it relates to the discussion of '16 Ghostbuster's box office.

how many tickets they sell isnt of major concern to studio higher ups, they just want to know the final numbers and how that compares to today's competition.
