Can someone please explain to me why everyone loves Kendrick Lamar?

I constantly hear him praised as of he's black Jesus come to save the rap game, but I honestly don't get it. I've heard his music and it's not even any good.

He's the mainstream voice of morality and reason that hip hop has needed for a long time. He's more of a christian artist than christian artists, as he has come to spread a message among the sick, not the healthy.

I've found your problem. Kendrick's music sucks if you listen to one hot single and take off your headphones. Listen to any of his recent records from start to finish. If you like nothing about hip-hop you should still enjoy the production and the cleverness of the juxtaposition of many of the tracks. Shit just appeals to the human ear man.

My first listen of GKMC, I didn't really understand the hype. His voice sounds kind of plain, and I wasn't really getting into his style. He was a very acquired taste for me. I realized his voice wasn't plain, it was subtle and nuanced. His lyrical structure flow is atypical for someone so popular and accessible. If you give him a fair shake, you may just be impressed. Give GKMC a couple listens.

Yeah I don't like his voice and his beats are boring for the most part. Plus the fact that so many other rappers have already done the socially conscious raps in a much better way makes him underwhelming unless you just started listening to rap

I think he has a scope and ambition that a lot of rappers who have a similar sound lack, so that makes him stand out. Usually has good production, too. He's honestly not that amazing as a rapper. His flow can get repetitive (mostly on TPaB), his lyrics are complex but not that much, and his delivery is often unconvincing, especially when he tries to do boast raps. GKMC is honestly the only one of his albums that I really like.

He's the most overrated artist of the 2010s.

I don't get it either. He's a decent enough rapper, but the music just isn't very good and his rapping voice is annoying bordering on grating.

He puts out by-the-numbers "conscious rap" that pseudo intellectuals can slobber all over to prove that they're better than you which is the only real purpose he serves.

Writes catchy, easy to listen to songs as well as being fairly innovative and experimental for hip hop

Most of his albums have plenty of very good songs but he's definitely over-rated. There is plenty of very good rap artists out right now and he's among them but put up there as the GOAT.

Production team acting wierd as fuck after the album release, the period at the end of the song titles implying the sentences need to be completed ect.

I personally enjoy him. Tracks like sing about me, momma, average joe are my favorites and stand out. Others he may be bland. But most songs I enjoy. He is mainstream as fuck but still is able to stand out. Check out his interview with Rick Rubin. That's just my opinion though. He can sound shitty to some people.

There's nothing to get

His music is pretentious. It looks deep and meaningful but when you actually consider it you realize it's just different for the sake of it and it isn't saying or accomplishing anything. It gets worse the more you listen to it.

The writing is horrible, the flow is awkward and annoying and the production is contrived and phoned-in. It's stupid, annoying, tacky crap and if it occupied any other genre people would be saying the same thing.

The answer is that he "appeals" to people because he puts on a show of being smart and meaningful and rap music like that is so in its own world that people don't really know how to argue with it.
