Is there a more useless genre term than "post punk"?

Pop Rock

Not really. It's a more wide exploration of punk music with heavy focus on the rhythm section and unusual guitar riffs.

really? its a pretty straightforward, accurate description of the music

It's punk after punk, "post punk". But to answer your question probably Alt Rock. Is it just what people call 90s rock?

Alternative is the worst fucking tag. It can be anything from the Smiths to something like Weezer. Just too inconsistent.

It's only really used to denote popular Rock music though. If I go on RYM and search it on the chart Penny Lane, When Doves Cry and Sweet Jane are all listed as it, despite them sounding very little alike. It's very rarely used to denote the sound of the record and only really suggests the success of the artist in creating it.

>more wide exploration
Hence, useless
