Sorry if I'm not allowed to say writing is one of the many reasons New Vegas is superior. If writing isn't important, why is Fallout 3 better? Surely, they're basically the same game, if we ignore the writing aspect?

I'm pissed s shit about fo4. i fucking bought a ps4 for this shit? An the more i played it the more i felt that it was just remapped or texture fo3. it felt like the same. the story was shit. the only good faction was the brotherhood. preston is annoying as shit tinker tom is annoying as shit. survival was more of annoyance than challenging. it seemed like shit was cut out of not just the story line but quests too.

New Vegas had potential, but obsidian couldnt make up their mind about whether they wanted to make a game about a post apocalyptic wasteland, cowboys, or Imperial Rome and it just makes a weak setting thats just stupid. At least bethesda understands its a post apocalyptic setting, not some shitty dystopian future with a mafia run by robots

NV isn't perfect, but the flaws were exasperated by rushed development. Because there's no publisher on the planet who's willing to give Obsidian a realistic timetable to make a complete game.

Having played FO3 for like 200 hours before I ever played FO:NV,
FO3 has a bunch of shit wrong with it on its own, NOT just the writing. Don't get me wrong, the writing is bad, the story makes no sense etc etc. Beating a dead horse here.
But there's a bunch of other design decisions they made that are mind boggling:
-The completely despairing gray color palette used. I get it, it's the apocalypse, everything is broken and worn out. The problem is, everything else about their game completely disagrees with that. The zany quests, weird colorful monsters, strange people, etc. The colours they used make more sense in a game like Metro 2033, which has a much more gritty approach to the whole post-apocalypse thing. FO3 is not meant to be a sad/depressing game, so they shouldn't have tried to make it look that way.
-Shit engine that they still didn't bother fixing or improving. This is 100% bethesda's fault, because they're lazy and want to milk money without having to remake anything.
-Too much repetition in the world. Going anywhere means a sloggy grind through super mutants / enclave / ghouls / whatever. It gets mind numbing. The reason everyone loves deathclaws and thinks they're awesome is because they show up RARELY, but are terrifying when they do. Nobody's scared of FO3 ghouls because they're boring and weak. Remember the invisible nightkin basement for the FO:NV rocket quest? Only happens like once, and is absolutely terrifying when it does.
-Ugly as fuck faces for characters. I mean dear god, what were they thinking.
On topic of OP, Obsidian can't make a game on their own. They have good writing but nothing else. If Beth bought obsidian's writers, they might do better - but it still wouldn't fix the problems lsisted above.

The issue with the Fallout series is that they don't seem to take lessons about what worked in previous games, and what didn't. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are two very different games with very different merits. Comparing them or declaring one superior is virtually impossible, this extends to Fallout 4 as well. I do agree that NV had the superior story, but this is tapered somewhat by a vast desert with very little in it. I could go on.

My biggest complaint about the series is lack of enemy diversification.
Raiders, ghouls, mutants, bum bah bum bah bum. There are exceptions to the rule, but that's what they are - exceptions.
Bethesda sucks. Fallout sucks. Skyrim sucks. All the versions and ports of their games are glitchy fucking messes with like 5 voice actors and gameplay so repetitive that you'll be reduced to quick saving every few minutes, so you don't have to play the shitty game longer than you have to

It's too bad Obsidian had 1/3 of the time to build a game, they couldn't fill New Vegas with anywhere near as much interesting architecture, and the world ends up with thousands more invisible walls. The game world is nothing but a desert with shacks and factories.

Maybe if you have zero standards. Fallout 3 had an even worse story but made up for it by not ruining the atmosphere and having balance to the amount of items you get. New Vegas fucking overloads you with items even on the hardest difficulty, it makes every playthrough turn into deciding which 50 of the 5000 weapons you want to carry with you, sunset saspirilla is seemingly infinite, the gun runners shop destroys any scrounging for ammo as they serve infinite amounts of it, each NPC has a veritable treasure trove of stuff tucked away in his ass, so survival is never, ever an issue, even on survival mode.
It's just a rushed, unbalanced game. They decided to make it an FPS instead of an RPG. Weapon damage is ramped up by almost thirty times what it was in Fallout 3, while this pleases the COD kiddies, it takes away any need to utilize RPG elements. God New Vegas was a mediocre game. Fallout 3 is only slightly better.

If you played both you can see clearly that they reused the engine which they didn't have to build from scratch. Buildings, roads, weapons models are also samewhat similar.
