African drums all over this album and Fear of Music

>African drums all over this album and Fear of Music
>Band is all white people

Is this cultural appropriation?

>SJWs rant about how much they love diversity
>lose their shit when whyte bois start making black music because it's "cultural appropriation"
>implying that isn't making culture more diverse

>implying any black person would be able to tell you this sounds like black music

in fact they will tell you its the whitest music they have heard. also this is a bait thread so im ashamed of even replying

black ppl using guitars is cultural appropriation

White people never steal black music and reinterpret it.

If that's cultural appropriation than so is black artists rapping over computer-generated beats.

Using African influences in your music isn't appropriation. That's just the synthesizing process that all musicians use.

Music is only appropriation if it:

A) attempts blatant imitation of a pre-existing sound
B) imitates that sound without embracing the surrounding culture
C) utilizes a power imbalance to sell the sound to a wider audience

So, it would be cultural appropriation if the Talking Heads donned dashikis and recorded basically an Indestructible Beat of Soweto cover album and called it like "THE TALKING HEADS GO TO AFRICA" and sold it to people without crediting or paying the artists who developed the sound.

Depends on whether or not you support apartheid.

Hint: it is if you do

>t. salty niggers or libtard cuckolds

Cultural appropriation doesn't fucking exist.
Culture is just an abstraction that is symbolically and ideologically perpetuated. The fucking idea that culture can be """"""""""""""""""""owned"""""""""""""""""""" by anyone or anything is nothing more than a stupid fucking meme.
Even if it was a legitimate concept, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It directly leads to artistic advancement, evolution and innovation.

>rock and roll
>band is all white people
Was it cultural appropriation?

Just because something doesn't exist independent of human perception and foible doesn't mean that those very same forces can't cause it, for all intents and purposes, to exist.

And when you go a step further than simply being influenced by a less-powerful culture (say, poor coal miners) and actually try to market their culture to an audience without crediting them--then yeah, you've done something shitty. It's all product of invented divisions and hierarchies, but try telling a coal miner in West Virginia you're not being a shithead wearing your "Coal Country Chic" $500 artisan-smudged overalls and acting like you're an authentic hillbilly til you move on to the next trend.

I'm not saying you'd do that. I'm just saying things can be shitty without being based on immutable rules of reality.

S A G E

Typical Stirnerite not understanding language. If it was about ownership then it would be called cultural stealing. Appropriation is something quite different that deals with non-physical ideas such as culture. So take your stupid fucking meme and fuck off.

that's a fault of capitalism

I'm no SJW but I saw Stop Making Sense in the theater recently (for the first time ever), and even I had to note how the whole backing band were like 5-6 black folks, while the "main band" was clearly and explicitly set up as the "main unit" first, before the whole live band comes out, conferring black cred or such.

They all looked like they were having fun at the shows, though, bouncing off the walls, acting autistic, egging each other on, rising up off the floor.

>Is this cultural appropriation?
No. Like all Early (non-recorded) Hip-Hop, there wasn't much a foundation on what was cool or in so pioneers just made old groove stuff they may or may not have grew up on.

People are really responding like to this thread? It's so obvious it's bait.

You could make an argument for Listening Wind and Houses in Motion being appropriation but the album really doesn't feel like African music. It uses contemporary song structure and isn't almost entirely based on groove and soloing. It isn't happy either.

It directly leads to watered down outsider perspectives that often miss the entire point.

To appropriate literally means to take possession of or to take without "permission". You cannot appropriate a culture because a culture cannot be possessed.
