Its this massive wood eating grub the abos pull from rotting tree logs, they fat and when you bite into them the slime and guts go everywhere. You can also cook it over the fire if you want to avoid that but its still nasty

Nothing like country livin', getting up early in the morning after a rainy day to hunt for snails before all the other hicks got to them. We'd fetch a big net of them, my granny would cook them up and deep freeze most of them so we'd have snails whenever we fancied them.
