Star Trek

The only things I've ever watched were the newer movies by Abrams, are the TV shows worth watching? Where would I start

The start.

So the old shows still hold up?

hit or miss, really

Is it worth getting into or should I just move on ?

What's the reason you'd get into it? You don't have a backlog?

>are the TV shows worth watching?
TNG, Voyager and Enterprise are.

Watch these in this order: ENT, TNG, DS9

I never watched anything star trek really series is so complicated for newcomers

>Translation: could a millennial handle watching series more than 10 years old?
No, it will be unbearable for you. Stick to Game of Thrones or the other stuff your friends tweet about.

All trek feels old at this point. Every bit of it except the Kelvin/timeline movies are going to require you to suspend some disbelief to buy into the setting. Start with the original series, know that despite how fucking corny it all is that the series has endured for 50 years, and after a few episodes you'll start to like some characters and you'll be off.

With maybe 1-2 exceptions Star Trek is the king of building and strictly adhering to a meticulously constructed fictional universe. All of the little details matter and they all pay off one way or another.

No. If you like Abrams-Trek and want more, don't watch and of the old Star Trek, it probably isn't for you. It tends to be about ideas and discovery. not "zooom, pew pew pew, lazorz!"

I've been watching The Original Series. It's a little cheesy, but still holds up pretty well.

Admittedly, I only watched a few episodes of TOS when I was 5, and grew up with Next Gen. I'm 24 now, and while I prefer TNG, I'm enjoying TOS greatly.

Op here, in 2 episodes in, and I like it so far. The writing holds up

OP here, this is so gay, nothing ever happens. Going to go back to watching star wars the prequel

This is probably the most true thing you'll ever hear about any Star Trek series. There's some legitimately fantastic stories in there. There's a considerable amount of completely serviceable, diverting episodes. And there's a huge sea of hokey, heavy-handed shit.

There's no real viewing order. I mean I guess you could start at TOS (my personal favorite series) and just go chronologically from there, but that's not really required. The show is almost entirely episodic, so you could just buy a DVD set at random and have a pretty solid idea of what that show's about.

I could just delete my post instead of typing this but I already wrote it so fuck you buddy.

>despite how fucking corny it all is

Naw mate, he should start with TAS, he'll love Star Trek forever

JUST WATCH THE FUCKING SHOWS

TNG mostly. DS9 is great, even if it copied from Babylon 5. ToS does seem slow at points, but its animated series is surprisingly good. Voyager is meh, and Enterprise is weak sauce that only gets good near the end.

>TNG
>holding up

LMAO

if you like Abrams Star Trek you'll probably hate the shows

Going through TOS right now and I've gotta say, they do really dramatic camera shots to its best and worst.

They'll do really interesting follow-throughs or start on great angles, but they also zoom in on faces and hold for much longer than welcome.

Chronological by show timeline would be more appealing to someone who isn't used to older Trek's camp. You could ease into it with ENT.

reddit is great, always a useful guide on that site

>starting this debate again
Most of S1 and S2 is bad, I'll agree. DS9 was a good direction to take it, as we saw that not everyone agreed with Picard's high views. Section 31 was retarded, though. Both are still better than the series that killed the franchise.

I recently finally watched Deep Space Nine after having only watched the original series, next generation, and some of the movies in the past. DS9 quickly became my favorite.

>copied from B5

Dude, DS9 started before B5. Maybe the concept was pitched at the other network first, but it isn't like they could copy the show any more than (Space Station hub of political intrigue).

I am just surprised it took them three seasons to learn their lesson and bring in the Defiant and real conflict.

I have also literally never watched Star Trek in my life.
My roommate and I are halfway through Season 2 of TOS right now.

Overall it's pretty entertaining even if it's partly due to how dated and goofy it is.
Although I kind of hate how every second episode is about some omnipotent super being with magical powers.

Watch DS9 my friend.

>Although I kind of hate how every second episode is about some omnipotent super being with magical powers.
I agree with this.

If you're under 21 and watching you deserve a medal and parade.

DS9 is fun mostly because of the call backs to TNG, you don't expect him to wait till Season 3 for DS9 to get good do you?

Thanks for the suggestion, I was having out with a girl I'm trying to fuck and I put on star trek, 45 mins in she started making out with me and grabbed my dick. We didn't fuck but I think I bored her so bad with the show she made the first move

I watch 1960s doctor who.

Do NOT start with ENT, it was a failed series that didn't get good until the last season.

Start with Series 3 of The Next Generation, forget the 1 and 2, you didn't miss much.

Season 2 of TNG has some pretty good episodes. Season 1 is tough to get through but at least it introduces the characters and the ship. I wouldn't skip it.

Fan collective dvd-boxes is one good starting point. Best episodes from all shows based on their theme. Some overlap in episodes and IMHO misses few very good episodes.

>Dude, DS9 started before B5.

JMS pitched B5 to paramount in 1987. Several years before DS9 started.

Messianic captain.
Massive war coming.
Space station acting as hub for everything.
Government using security as excuse to sell out it's ideals and become totalitarian.

Purely coincidental...

ENT is half way between modern continuing plot tv-show and old time episodic tv-show. They started with purely episodic formula. Producers were totally out of touch with audience, once they changed showrunner it became good, but it was already too late.

If you liked the new Abrams movies don't bother.
