Why was there such a sharp decline in quality after Hellraiser II? What went wrong with the sequels?
Why was there such a sharp decline in quality after Hellraiser II? What went wrong with the sequels?
Didn't the other movies just turn into softcore porn movies to show on Showtime and Cinemax in the late 90s early 2000s? Some tits and ass with dumb plot type deal?
The one's after 4 were mostly Jacob's Ladder clones.
Americanization, my friend. Pure and simple Americanization. The second they moved production over to these shores was the deathknell of the series.
As if keeping the series away from the states was going to save it? What other horror franchise has been able to do that?
People move over to the states for a reason, numbnuts
inb4 found the American cuck
You are right because not one horror movie from America ever had an impact on the genre. Idiot
the original imagery and psychological horror easily lent themselves to scary monster movies with jokes.
I've only watched the first two for the longets time, and now I want to plumb the depths of hte rest of the trash... at least the wire twins look vaguel sexy.
A mixture of budgetary constraints, lack of source material (i.e. less input from Clive Barker), and shit period (early 90s) for horror in general--even though I still love all the Skinemax-fodder gems from that time period.
Because the first 2 follow the book, "The Hellbound Heart", and everything afterward is just banking on the success of the first two in order to squeeze money out of people.
They ran out of ideas
It's hard to build a horror franchise when it's not set up to be one from the get-go. Hellraiser was a self-contained story that ended with nowhere to go, really. You have to be thinking of a bigger narrative universe when you make the first one, and they were not doing that with Hellraiser. Even though Clive Barker made a second one, you can see from the interviews that they shit it out pretty quick and he evens says that is about all he could do with it.
read Hellraiser Vol1 & 2. they're a direct continuation after Hellbound and actually really good. They give pinhead's character a great deal of depth without ruining him. I'd even say they're worthy of a screen adaptation.
Not sure how the other Hellraiser comics are though.
got anymore?
Never seen any of these movies, but I'm kind of interested after watching Event Horizon recently.
Which ones should I watch?
The biggest thing is that the other movies miss the rules of Hellraiser.
Including the fact that they use physical torture (Which can be translated into BDSM-esque pleasure), not psychological.
watch the first two. 3 is kinda fun but its not great, the rest suck
First has some pretty great body horror effects, reminds me of Cronenberg.
thanks
But the second movie has zero to do with the book. The book ends at the end of the first movie more or less.
>Why was there such a sharp decline in quality after Hellraiser II?
Americans.
Well in this case it got into the hands of American studios and producers, which obviously had a negative impact on the series. So yeah, in this case it was the Americans fault it degraded. Of course America have made great films and horror films.
Is it America's fault every single other horror movie ever made becomes worst every sequel also?
If they produced it and have most of the involvement then yeah.
it went outside the book. part 1 was good part 2 was great( i am talking about book)
Anyone else think Revelations could've been really good if they gave it more time and a bigger budget?
Hellraiser 2 went outside the books.
This. After 2 they had no where to go but backward.
Inferno was much better than 3 & 4, Hellseeker was probably the next best after that but was just a blatant copy of Inferno anyways.
Thoughts on this Pinhead?
Just a slight notch above the one in Revelations. You can recast Ghostface, Leatherface, Jason and Michael Myers. You can't recast Freddy, Candyman or Pinhead.
What if Robert Englund and Doug Bradley swapped roles?
Proud amerifat confirmed
The sharp decline is quality happened halfway through Hellraiser II
dogshit
If you honestly think any of those """"""horror"""""" flicks were ever good, you're a huge fucking pleb. It's pure torture porn for edgy teens, and not even good one.
thanks for letting us in on your vague notions, really helpfull
Subjectivity.
I'd love to see a restored, uncut version of Hellraiser 2: Hellbound, but fucks me where I'd start looking for one. Shit, I'd even buy that motherfucker.
For your geek enjoyment, you probably see "Rush" in the screenplay if you can lay your hands on them which is the criminal force that caused declining of the quality in this franchise.
Clive Barker not writing/directing.
If you read at all (I know a lot of people here don't), you should picm up The Scarlet Gospels by Barker. It's basically Harry D'amour (private detective from Lord of Illusions) vs. Hell's High Priest (Pinhead) facing off in Hell. Pretty sick book. 9/10 easy.
Afaik a number of the sequels didn't start off as Hellraiser in script form but just had Pinhead stuff tacked on to get produced and because they had the rights.
Oniichan!
Like any horror franchise
lol fat pinhead
>we have such snacks to show you
