This thread is for the discussion of the language, culture, travel, daily life, etc. of Japan. Let's tark at randam in Japanese and English. Take it easy!
>spent a few months away from Japanese on account of school >rusty; forgetting words and kanji (not grammar, though), some of them very basic
>Senran Kagura: Estival Versus has a Japanese text option >use it >play a few sessions >actually manage okay; context is a powerful tool >looking things up really sucks without rikai, though
>come back to environment where I can use rikai >brain immediately goes out of focus; where it would easily get to work throwing things together in SK, it actually feels like I'm fighting against crippling resistance to "unnecessary" work when it knows that rikai is sitting within easy reach in the upper-right hand corner
I think that kicking these quick dictionary tools might be the key to mastering Japanese. Unfortunately, it's also the best way to mine words for anki.

Not a problem with the stylization but I don't know those 3 kanji in the middle.

Does Japan still produce Katana? Do they make traditional looking ones or they changed i somehow? How does modern katana from Japan looks like?
Eli Foster
You'll find them in souvenir shops at tourist traps that are more oriented towards historical Japanese culture, i.e. Asakusa.
If I remember correctly, they had some functional swords sitting alongside the cheap decorational ones.

What is the nearest equivalent city to say, Toronto?

I dislike all those souvenir swoeds. If you want to have a sword then you need to get a real one. Having a replica just seems pathetic in my opinion.

2. Getting money and paying for drugs and whores could be more fun, in my opinion.
David Thomas
Most people who buy the decorational swords probably don't realize that what they're getting is a fragile piece of junk that isn't fit to be called a sword.
I agree, though. It's like owning a gun that would just break if you actually fired it. Even if its main purpose is to be a decoration on the wall, that's kinda pathetic.
Liam Wright
Yes If you want to own a real Katana you must to go to Katana specialty shops. But in Japan buying real Katanas needs a license so I'm not sure how foreigners to get them.
Julian Wilson
You can probably just have it mailed. Considering the potential for tourist bucks, I couldn't see them making it a bureaucratic nightmare for an American to take a Japanese katana home with him.

Can you recomend some books about samurai other than 葉隱 , 五輪書 and 武道初心集? I am interested in the subject and search for other resources.

That was my misunderstanding, sorry X( You're right. It seems people don't need any licenses to buy sharpened Katanas.
Did you already read 武士道 by Inazou Nitobe? I'll recommend it.
