I've been curious what people on Sup Forums thought about this in general.
I know it doesn't change the quality of whatever you're listening to, but how does it change, if at all, how you perceive an artist/group that has a ton of people writing their songs along with the artist/group themselves?
For example, pic related is the track listing for MBDTF on Wikipedia that includes the writer credits for each song. I'm sure you guys all knew that already but I wasn't aware personally (mostly because I still haven't listened through the album). Does knowing that change your perception of the music/artist at all?
People praise Kanye as one of the best -- if not THE best -- hip-hop artists of the generation. Do the writing credits discredit that opinion at all? I just looked now at TPAB and it's pretty much the same, though with noticeably fewer other people in the writing credits.
Angel Parker
You mean like the small platoon that goes into any given Beyonce song?
Carter Rogers
>it's a globalists shill got BTFO trying to slander Lana so they switch to Kanye thread
Kevin Ramirez
In terms of Kanye West, if I remember correctly, he tends to over credit his albums. He pretty much gives credit to everybody and anybody who was there during the recording process. So I don't think massive writing credits reflect on him badly.
With Kendrick, I'm 95% positive he doesn't use ghost writers, and that all the writing credits are for the production, which is fine by me.
I guess it depends on what the writing credits are for, and even then it's hard to tell since they can be misleading. Generally speaking, I don't really care that much about writing credits, though it's a really great way to insult a shit artist you already don't like.
Lincoln Reed
MBDTF is overrated and Kanye gets way too much credit as some kind of producing-and-rapping ~auteur~ given how little production and writing he actually does, but nah not really, if it still sounds good and the artist isn't pretending they're somehow doing it all alone why should I care A song produced by and featuring performances from eight people which uses a sample having nine writers isn't weird
Matthew Nguyen
doesn't TLOP has like 2 times more credits than Lemonade?
Jason Smith
I give half a fuck about pop music, but I think I heard some of those Beyonce songs have 50+ people working on them.
The whole mainstream music industry is fake as fuck.
Nathan Robinson
Wouldn't a globalist shill want to support Kanye and Lana since they're big mainstream people, which means (in your mind, if you're not joking) they're owned by The Jews?
Jackson Peterson
I, too, get my opinions on pop culture from 9gag dadrock memes
Aaron Rogers
>some of those Beyonce songs have 50+ people working on them link?
Nathan Jackson
who knows? I have more faith in Kanye being forthright though.
There is literally nothing I believe about the most like fictitious character known as 'Beyonce Knowles'.
Jaxon Gonzalez
How does fifty people working on a song make it 'fake' Is one person getting help with writing a song from another person 'fake' too Is a soloist playing an orchestral piece a talentless hack because they didn't write the piece or perform most of the parts?
Cooper Morgan
you would think, but here we are.
Kanye obvs went rogue.
Frankly I'm shocked LDR isn't corrupt.
Mason Thompson
Kanye is literally the male version of Beyonce you dumb virgin sexist
Alexander Kelly
McDonald's? Disgusting artificial trash... I trust Burger King to be honest with me
Dylan Campbell
like the mainstream press is going to talk about it
they're still pretending her marriage and first pregnancy were real.
Ian Martin
eventually the question has to be asked:
if you're listening to a (((Beyonce))) song on (((tidal))) that's chock full of native advertising....is it even music anymore?
Brody Harris
no way, kanye supports trump, the self made man, no way hes in cahoots with the rich tyrants
Robert Roberts
so you're not going to validate your words?
Joshua Martinez
I mean it sure sounded like music when I pirated it and listened to it a couple times
Justin Foster
Not a huge Kanye fan. He was obvs operating in a very similar manner as Beyonce for awhile.
But at the end of the day, he's not completely corrupt.
She's (?) completely corrupt.
Matthew Morgan
>music that is on a website I dislike is not music
Jordan Williams
when an artist isn't free to create in earnest is it still art?
Jaxon Robinson
>he's not completely corrupt. >She's (?) completely corrupt. how do you know?
Benjamin Wilson
The meme producers/writers is the Ghostwriter of Literature Your sucking a thousand of dicks and you dont know it.
Jaxson Torres
I mean she's done shitty things and is basically a cynically marketed brand with nothing at the centre but it's not like the music's all bad so why should I care about that shit if I'm not drinking the Beyhive Kool Aid
Oliver Powell
Yes That notion of sincerity is some weird intentional fallacy shit that doesn't fit at all with the actual history of art
Nathaniel Hall
Except we do know it, because it's all clearly written in the liner notes and online There are a lot of people who think Kanye writes and produces almost all of his own music but they just don't know shit about their favourite rapper and should Google it for like two minutes
Jacob Ramirez
I have ZERO tolerance for that shit
I only listen to legit independent artists.
no, I'm not questioning sincerity, I'm questioning (as many artists have said) if they're allowed to create freely. I don't think they are.
Isaac Garcia
>why should I care if the music I listen to is soulless, hollow and corrupt?
Seriously?
Cooper Smith
>I only listen to legit independent artists. Are you joking Please tell me your favourite artists
Francis Ford Coppola had nowhere near complete artistic freedom when he made The Godfather, still a work of art
Xavier Martinez
>Robert Fripp Do they actually count samples?
Jack Gomez
kek, no fucking way am I listing artists I care about
List them here, and the next thing I know they'll be on SNL glassy eyed and singing about transgender restrooms.
Zachary Ward
You do realise that things can sound good without fitting neatly in your bullshit authenticity boxes Am I meant to not listen to Ella Fitzgerald because she sings Gershwin songs instead of writing everything herself? Am I meant to not listen to Bob Dylan because he was a carefully branded product?
Aiden Nelson
robert fripp's verse on power was fucking fire
Luis Roberts
Ah, so you're either deeply paranoid or too shook to talk about bands you enjoy Maybe you don't like music at all and just like trying to shit on things you don't understand, I dunno Feel free to change your mind if you get over yourself, very curious as to which truly independent artists you think are without sin
Mason Flores
yep. What do you think shit like dance punk/daft punk/dna records was about?
removing meaningful content from the indie music world.
Jaxson White
It sounds crazy, but these are the times we live in
cats out of the bag on you dudes
Michael Perry
Removing meaningful content like rapists singing about Cowboy Dan being a major player in the cowboy scene or a yawning stoner waxing lyrical about carrot rope What a tragic loss for the West's youth culture
Wyatt James
>List them here, and the next thing I know they'll be on SNL glassy eyed and singing about transgender restrooms. yep.
if you take corporate money or sign contracts you're gonna get what's coming to you
Father John Misty of all people was recently talking about this.
Jacob Phillips
yeah, who needs free independent thought and expression.
a colluded centrally controlled (((Hollywood-esque))) systems is obviously sooooooooo much better.
Christian King
You do realise that the US and the UK are both run by right-wing ghouls, right Why would evil cultural Marxists be lurking on Sup Forums's 10th most popular board to snatch up the shitty music you like and somehow pay the artists to be woke
John Wilson
With a few exceptions indie music never said shit that wasn't basically navel gazing If you want to find independent modern music that expresses non-mainstream sentiments and hasn't been co-opted by major labels, listen to underground gangster rap, it's great But if you don't actually care about music so much as the idea of music as it pertains to your zany Jewish conspiracy theorists, just fuck off desu
Leo Adams
right wing v. left wing is a false dichotomy
and fuck off, anyone w/ two brain cells to rub together knows this board is rotten w/ shills.
Jose Morris
Please, give an example or two of the meaningful content that the world of indie music has been missing since LCD Soundsystem got Best New Music or whatever, I just wanna know
Noah Lewis
I mean it's reductive but not really Do you think Trump's administration are actively trawling Sup Forums for indie artists to exploit, yes or no
I was here for years and the only shills were like Bandcamp math rock guys or w/e
Cooper Barnes
nigga plz
the independent music scene of the 80/90s kicked the mainstream music scenes ass so badly they were forced to covertly co-opt it
it's lie upon lie upon lie w/ you people
Aiden Nguyen
>corporate rock apologist shills
I've seen it all
Nolan Torres
Yeah, and that floodgate was thrown open by a man shouting "A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido" over the same riff for three minutes What creative genius
Luis Bennett
>Do you think Trump's administration are actively trawling Sup Forums for indie artists to exploit, yes or no no, I doubt it
people behind soetoro though are same behind beyonce/grizzly bear/joanna newsom/kendrick lamar etc etc.
Jose Carter
You didn't answer my question lol
Easton Hall
literally quoting a fucking Geffen artist
baka
Christian Ramirez
again, I will not aid you people by listing the names of credible/important artists on here.
people in actual music scenes talk retards
Joshua Brown
Kendrick Lamar very organically came up through typical hip-hop routes before he became the go-to white person's favourite rapper Don't mistake the co-option of art by big corporations to sell magazines as evidence of an elaborate conspiracy
Joshua Sullivan
Please describe these exciting authentic artists to me friend, no names needed, just let me know what makes them so special and close to your heart that you fear their success
So the alternative revolution was dead before it began, yes
Benjamin Stewart
>2017 >sell magazines
are you guys even trying?
And anyone w/ half a brain can separate the real from the fake.
When Barry Soetoro is name dropping you, well....aint hard to tell.
Jason Walker
So I'm a shill who doesn't understand what I'm even shilling for, right, got you
Anyone with half a brain can tell that the immense evil that permeates this world has relatively little with Grizzly Bear getting signed to a major label lol Obama name dropped artists to look like a cool and friendly drone bomber, not to drop breadcrumbs for your goofy conspiracies
Hunter Gray
Grizzly Bear
kek
>born rich >dad lifelong friends with '''John Kerry'''
pretends he can't afford health insurance.
how convenient
Nothing about this fake culture is one the level.
Literally nothing.
it's all fake colluded garbage, and that why I (an tons of other people) deeply resent it.
>Obama name dropped artists to look like a cool and friendly drone bomber we can finally agree on something
Nolan Walker
Anf Jay-Z and Beyonce totally coincidently show up at his show in Williamsburg. It's all corrupt. From root to stem. Nothing about this hijacking if a culture is innocuous.
Dylan Harris
Three famous people strengthen their personal brands by hopping on a P4K-hyped band who've been around for years and are on the rise Frankly I don't see where the sinister deep state are entering the picture here pal
Adam Jenkins
>Obama name dropped artists to look like a cool and friendly drone bomber, which btw the entire fake independent music scene didn't utter a peep about
but like omg, he said 'grab them by the pussy'
Bentley Bennett
Sorry that you feel the need to play devil's advocate for the stupidest president of all time instead of just shitting on Obama for his many failings
Charles Cruz
I didn't vote. And have never voted for anyone or anything.
Frankly, I expect things to be corrupt at that level.
But I will speak up when the culture me and my friends helped build is being corrupted and exploited.
Jayden Kelly
Not to be a dick but I suspect you have done nothing to build any culture in your entire life And you conveniently get to pretend you have by acting like I, a 21-year-old British student who has never voted, am some kind of shadowy conspirator who's trying to destroy art as we know it
William Jenkins
fuck off. despite your agenda, not everyone on here is a fat 18 year old virgin.
Gavin Bennett
If you're actually on the level (seriously doubt it), and you're 21, you're wayyyy too young to have experienced what I'm talking about.
Nathan James
I have no agenda Full disclosure, I'm a dumb socialist who hates capitalism and thinks that art's primary nature being a product to be sold has horrific implications for the future of art, but I still think you're full of shit
What are you talking about you bitter old fuck, cynical marketing of music you don't like? Boo hoo Yes indie music has been fucked over by big corporations, but that's just capitalism operating as normal, nothing to do with a conspiracy that reaches as high as government (who, obviously, are corrupt, but don't intervene directly in indie rock band shit because why the fuck would they). If you believe that everyone who disagrees with you online is as an ebil government agent who's trying to ruin your life, maybe you should log off once in a while
Dominic Taylor
>t. Butthurt pop fan
Jose Hughes
Oops wrong user see above
Jace Perry
I listen to music that sounds good whether it's Charles Ives or Ginuwine instead of the music that's marketed to me as reel tru music for hip dorks, how foolish of me
Isaac Turner
You credit people as a writer if you use a sample of their work in yours, unless you actually think Robert Fripp, Mike Oldfield, Manfred Mann, Peter Sinfield, Greg Lake, Ian McDonald, Michael Giles, Gil Scott-Heron, Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward, Lommi, Geezer, Aphex Twin, Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, and Jon Anderson actually were there in the studio helping Kanye make the album.
And to your actual question: No, it does not change my perception at all.
