What's it like working retail?

What's it like working retail?

Really depends on where you work.
I worked at a gas station and two stores up in the mountains and you could tell customers to fuck off and the boss/co-workers had your back. It was pretty nice.

Reallll fucking shitty. Granted I work at WalMart of all places and it's fucking awful. Only reason I've stayed so far is Electronics is a joke to work in, honestly I go in and don't do dick all most nights. Co-workers are pretty sweet too so that helps.

Aside from that can't stand the atmosphere of the place and company.

Worked at Walmart. It was the worst time of my life.

I worked at Barnes and Noble for 3 years , I loved every minute of it

who else /wendys closing grill guy/

litearlly cut my life into pieces

currently work at gamestop

it has its ups and downs.

ups being some customers, being able talk shop, and discounts

downs being some customers, quotas, and stress.

I work at Target, it's not bad. Then again I actually do my job and I'm not completely retarded. Coworkers for the most part are fine, most of the management is fine, and the pay in my store at least is starting $1 over minimum (in Massachusetts this is now $12/hr for stocking shelves). In Target you manage to avoid many of the trashy customers Wal-Mart gets, but the way they treat employees is really fucking gay. No Wal-Mart song thank God, but it's painfully liberal (customers are called guests, every meeting we have to commend our coworkers, AKA "team members" for doing something nice, that kind of shit).
tldr it's not bad

My job doesn't play music over the loudspeakers so I can avoid listening to today's pop hits. I'd say it's pretty alright by me.

Ocean State Job Lot.
Shitty retail store chain in new england. Worst fucking experience of my life- the customers, the tasks I was given, the coworkers

former tjmaxx and zumiez employee. I love retail because you have a nice mix of business and downtime and you can talk to people or not talk to people depending on how you feel. got a lot more confident just talking to random people on the register too. AMA

This thread is another reminder why I will remain neet for the foreseeable future.

brutal.

tho if you have great workmates it can be a fun day at an otherwise shitty shitty job

I hate that place. I feel like I transported into your stereotypical retail hell every time I walk in. Must be the lighting and terrible store layout.

Dont expect to live off that cash get that higher education b

I definitely found the same thing with talking to people. You get so many opportunities to improve your social skills if you're an autismo.

Why are they laughing at him?

Same thing as another user said.

I worked at Target for almost 2 years, and it was pretty easy. I started in backroom at a new store, and by the time I left, I could do 4 different "jobs" around the store. Purposely never learned to cashier though- fuck dealing with whiny guests. I got pretty lucky with great coworkers though- can't say I hated any of them.

You get to discover how dumb "average" really is.

yup. practicing eye contact and small talk helped me a loooot before coming to college

fuck that gay shit,

Barnes and Noble vet here as well. Worked at one location for 4 years, then went back to college and finished undergrad. Currently working at a different location until I start grad school in the fall.

Overall it's a good gig as retail goes. Get along well with my coworkers and my bosses are fair and reasonable. Sometimes, though, I get customers who are so utterly fucking retarded that I don't understand how to they manage to breathe. Also, old people who can never remember book titles or authors.

...

Sounds about right.
I work Flo, so they let us slide on some of the rules. Plus we almost never have huddles.
Overall it's not too bad.

I've been fired from all the retail jobs I've had.

I'm manic depressive and I didn't know at the time but one night at Home Depot I spray painted "Fuck this shit" on the outside garden wall and thought it was hysterical. They found out and the next day gave me $9 in cash for the hour I was there and escorted me out.

I got fired from Target because my manager said I was running around the dept intentionally avoiding him and playing around. I was in the same spot the whole time this was said to have occurred. So I got in a fight with him and told him to suck my dick and shit and so I wasn't allowed back.

I spent two summers working retail.
First summer was Target. I had the 4:00 am shift, unloading boxes, stocking shelves, managing inventory position. Two managers. One was a fuckshit 30 year old dudebro who didn't need to tell me in order for me to know that he 100% played hockey in high school. Other was a woman, kinda slow witted, face was weird looking, but generally kind.

Experience was shitty overall. Waking up that early was not worth $11 an hour. (though that was the starting wage). Left for college at end of summer, found out over christmas break that I had been fired over a scheduling error, I am now blacklisted and cannot work at target anymore because dudebro manager got totally ticked off bro that i left him 1 man down over tax free weekend.

Next summer I worked at Toys R Us. Could not have been more unlike my target experience. All of my coworkers were kindhearted, understanding, and fun to be around. Kids who got to shop at Toys R Us usually had a good day, and it was fulfilling to be a part of that. Closing shifts sucked because we had to collect all the shit that kids picked up and moved around the store and put it all back, (which was kinda tough at first when you don't know where things go), but overall was a good experience, despite only making $8 an hour.

Front end cashier at walmart
I like it. I dont get why people dont like it

...

Manager at a walmart. It's not that bad actually and pays well

...

...

I also got fired from Macy's because they hired me and then forgot about me. I went like twice and just stood in different places all day. So one day I called them and told them and they said I didn't show up for shifts so they thought I wasn't coming. They told me not to come back.

I work at an independently owned store that has only one location. I don't really mind working there. The pay is not great but it's in cash under the table at least. I get to play whatever music i want in the store while i work. The majority of the customers aren't annoying. Sometimes someone interesting comes in. Don't really have much work to do unless it's the start of a season meaning new product is coming in every day. Our policy is that if a customer spends over $200 we offer them a shot of one of our bottles of whisky so i get to take a shot with them if they accept. Owner buys me food whenever they are in the store and gives me a ride home as well.

What state are you in? I was making $9.75 an hour working 4am backroom. I would've loved $11.

...

I'm sure you had a different experience, but working retail (in many stores) has little downtime to socialize. Especially in big stores that are understaffed, you're kept so busy that you don't have time to socialize. If you dick off, you'll get canned.

...

Generally shitty. Better if you're buddies with the coworkers. I've heard working with commission can get you more, but that it makes you compete with your coworkers

I manage the backroom of a Walmart. Overall it's not bad. In the past I've had issues with higher up managers giving me the shaft over various things because they have little to no idea what goes on in their own store but fortunately with the help of a couple of other higher up managers we managed to change them. It's pretty chill as of now.

I hardly see customers all day but even when I do there's never been any problems. Just a lot of where can I find this and how much does this cost?

The only downside is managing the occasional shit teir employee that thinks they can get away with anything.

Not to mention all of the tail that either works in the store or shops there. Got dayum.

Currently working at Kroger and I swear it's the worst shit. The "front end" where all the main business is at is always loud and the service desk team is always calling people from OTHER departments because so many people quit on a regular basis because of how awful they are at managing.

The real kicker is that they always blame those below them in paygrade and are always constantly slacking off and talking way too much when they are forced to move their fat asses to a register.

Though, there are some perks such as the 10% employee discounts and the THICC bitches that I get to work with.

Also, the store manager is a muslim

I'm the guy who worked at Toys R Us. Pushing the rewards cards, credit cards, warranties, batteries, all that shit was obnoxious. If you didn't consistently perform to your quota you were scolded. Thankfully, in the store I worked at, a couple of guys overachieved to the point where it didn't matter if i didnt pull my weight.

I am a low end manager at a regional convience store/gas staion and I love it.

It started off as a job before college and now I can't see myself anywhere else.

...

I worked in TN. Pretty sure minimum wage was 7.25. I'm pretty sure the only reason I got that much because the store was so fucking understaffed that they had extra payroll budget to entice people to apply.

TG&Y best time of my life

It's Okay

...

...

Depepnds on your store and what area it's in. Some areas seem to have more assholes than others and if you're understaffed it puts a lot of pressure on the cashiers. Mine only has about half the amount of cashiers that we need. So cashiering can really suck.

...

...

Work at an Ace hardware, really small store, and almost everyone that comes in is around seventy years old. I have seen at least four world war two vets. After working there for a year or so I hate old people now.

...

I worked front end. The only things I really hated was management, working nights and weekends, and the goddamn family of gypsies that lived nearby.

...

...

...

Worked at Target overnight stocking for about a year. Would agree with you guys.

The employee shit is weird. The 'team member' garbage and the 'guests' and all that. You can tell who has been brainwashed in upper management and who doesn't care. Overnights wasn't too bad unless it was a peak season. Throwing the truck was balls. And stocking an entire store in 4 hours was balls. They could easily let people work from 10-4 am but they don't to save money, makes stocking more stressful.

...

...

Kroger front end cashier here, I feel you. Management is overall poor, but I do my best to just roll with whatever goes on.

I wouyld not know too much but just from working at a fast food joint at a mall, It sounds like it's shit during the hours noon-3pm on an average weekday.

I had the same experience
is me.
How many pieces was your average truck size? My store often had 2200 piece trucks on normal days, and on more than a few occasions, two 1700-ish piece trucks. Double truck days were awful, because I was in charge of dealing with the cardboard boxes and other trash. You had to fucking work at sonic the hedgehog speeds to finish before the end of your shift, and I worked part time so I had no excuse to refuse staying past the end of my shift to finish it up.

Fuck that job. Cashiering is soul sucking but i would rather do that than spend another minute unloading trucks

...

...

...

...

Not the guy you were asking but our store was generally around 17-1900 piece trucks 3 days a week, plus the refrigerated shit which was my (backroom's) responsibility. Our flow team was awful so backroom consistently had to help push the floor.

My first and still at Costco for 10 years, I'm surprised I made it this far without punching somebody,

Retail depends on the store.

1. Worked at Walmart and damn near everybody gets treated like shit. The managers shit on you, the customers shit on you, coworkers shit on you. But its what happens when you're the hot spot for trash/niggers.

2. Gamestop was fun. Most customers are cool except the moms who bought an M rated game for their kid. Or niggers who think you some how control the trade-in value of shit. I hated leaving there as a manager but corporate/LP bullshit will break you after so long.

3. Lowes/Home depot. Yes, its full of methed out construction workers, bitches looking for some random item they found on slickdeals that had been 500 dollars but is now 42 cents, and people who have torn something apart and didn't bring the broken item with them so you get the "its a round thingamajig that goes on the washer". White trash goes to Walmart as does niggers because its a buck cheaper but also because they usually rent and don't own a home they can put money into to build value. Corporate is very customer oriented but stores aren't suppose to be "walked over" by people trying to scam a few bucks. Plus the Mexicans outside will usually share their lunch if you don't run them off.

...

true, during the holiday season or during certain hours tj maxx could get busy but as long as you stay on top of your shit it doesn't get terribly stressful. as for zumiez it was always dead so i fucked around on my phone

I worked at a hardware store for a year
Depends alot on what department you are in.
When I was on checkouts I wanted to shoot myself
When I was selling floorboards and packing shelves I was having a great time and pay was great
Working in Australia had me earning $25 an hour

At the same time I was also delivering pizzas and I by far preferred retail
I mostly had great customers but every now and again you get one entitled dip shit that likes to step on people but it was really uncommon

We had trucks every morning. If we had double truck days they would be overnights, usually weekends. Christ I hated it. At one point we literally shipped some workers in from a Super-Target store downtown, who were outright baffled by the sheer volume of product we processed every day.
