Plagiarism in Music

What are some of your favorite cases of obvious plagiarism in music?
Reminder that Killing Joke tried to sue Nirvana for stealing their riff...that they themselves stole from The Damned. Fucking idiots.

Men at Work got their asses sued off for Down Under

Fleetwood Mac's Edge of Seventeen stole the intro from The Police's Bring on the Night

The bass riff in Ride's Seagull is quite literally the same from The Beatles' Taxman.

What's the difference between plagiarizing and sampling

are you retarded?

Stolen riff:

youtu.be/4_rYk_aJbcQ

Holy plagiarism, Batman!

A lesser known one of the many Oasis rips is that Champagne Supernova is a riff on the Kinks' Lola

great addition to the question faggot
there is no difference, you just either gotta pay the original artist or flip it so its "unrecognizable" or use bits that can be argued to be original.

there lots of grey area but realistically, sampling is plagiarism.

Led Zeppelin's entire career

sampling takes no skill

Einstürzende Neubauten claims that Depeche Mode took a sample from the studio by them. I don't remember the song

>Ripping off Death
Make this a cardinal sin. Schuldiner deserves better than this.

but plagiarising does?

no skill is required to spot a half second of audio that can be turned into a whole new song?

retuning? chopping? cleaning? mixing?

if it takes no skill why dont you just shit out a professional mix sampling some old track and make a hit

Kid Cudi's Flight at First Sight ripped off Shabazz Palaces' An Echo from the Hosts that Profess Infinitum

It might be coincidental, though. It just sounds like it to me.

Who did they steal?

Sampling is directly using an audio clip, plagarizing is imitating a musical idea from another song.

i remember being a teen and realizing From First to Last jacked Mastodon

youtube.com/watch?v=nLsd1iCEIPU

youtube.com/watch?v=Av-mJ8RFuFU

Should also note that plagiarism only occurs if the original source isn't cited.

tfw the Foo Fighters stole the god of metal's undisputed best riff and got literally zero shit for it

youtube.com/watch?v=bkysjcs5vFU

riff starts at around 1:30

Definitions don't matter to ppl who are trying to discredit hip hop and electronic music so they'll just skip over this post

Led Zeppelin took 2/10 songs and made them like 4/10!

Reminder that Killing Joke dropped the suit when Kurt Cobain died. And then Dave Grohl sat on the drum stool for Killing Joke on their 2003 s/t album which is one of their best and revitalised their career.

All is right with the world.

Sean Paul steals a lot of music

But The Damned probably "stole" it from The Kinks or someone, who maybe robbed a Muddy Waters riff, who could have mugged some field recording artist's ditty, who heard a bird singing in a fucking tree or something.

It's pretty obvious once you hit play

Sampling credits whoever they took the audio from and isn't trying to pass it off as their own thing.

Is every Oasis song just a rework a a British Invasion band's song? Only one I like that I don't think is a rip I'd Live Forever.

Don't know if it could count as plagiarism however one of the songs from Killer Instinct is extremely similar to a song from Tetsuo the Iron Man.

After ripping of Nirvana, the guy from Seether has an apparently graduated to ripping off everyone else

Not similar at all and they came out within months of each other..

Considering Nirvana's entire career was made ripping off the Pixies, I guess you could you say they're just paying it forward.

makes me wanna play a zelda game desu

1.) Plagiarism is taking an idea directly from someone else, executing it yourself so that it seems like your idea, and giving yourself credit for it (or not giving the original person credit for it.)
2.) Sampling is usually defined by taking bits and pieces directly from the original work, not replicating, and incorporating it into your own work so that it serves an almost entirely different purpose.

So sampling is kind of like adding 'sprinkles' to your already finished song, while plagiarizing is basically just covering a song without telling anyone it's a cover.

Speaking of The Kinks, plagiarism can't get more blatantly obvious than this

youtube.com/watch?v=B7encWb7lNQ
youtube.com/watch?v=eebfMFzJHNs

You can sample something and rerecord it instead of using the original track

Can someone post the one where Swans virtually copied the riff from Oxygen from another artist?

I don't remember who the other artist and, quite frankly, I don't care. They stole it but made it 100x better, so they get a pass.

I think you're thinking of Glenn Branca

Either way though Oxygen is at least original enough in comparison, and regardless the album version is what came from the acoustic song that Gira had as a solo thing for a while already so it's not like it was written to copy Branca

What else is open besides your mouth when you're like kissing on some gay dude and like holding his like muscles 'cause his arms just are like wrapped around you and you feel like so safe 'cause you're like... not that you're gay or nothing but God you just want to bury yourself in his chest and just live there forever.

They used the nursery rhyme 'kookaburra sits in the old gum tree' in the flute bit which was owned by some twat record company that sued them

It is also very similar to a jam song

>sat on the drum stool
Cringe

To be fair they thought it was public domain or traditional, and they (and the Australian public) were unpleasantly surprised that it was not. The rights owners were twats, though.

As an artist myself, this is too much. I can't support music anymore. I guess I'll just have to find a new artform to appreciate.

Phantom of the Opera plagiarised a part of Pink Floyd's Echoes.

The venn diagram of plagiarism and sampling has overlap but not all sampling is plagiarism. Its perfectly possible to take audio from other sources and use them to make entirely new compositions.
