I learned tulpamancy entirely on my own, not even by accident.
I just thought "I lack the mental capacity to think certain thoughts, due to arbitrary limitations imposed by my subconscious, and the only thing that could overcome those limitations would be my subconscious" so then I personified my subconscious.

Tulpas are capable of acting seemingly independently, i.e. you can ask a question and get a response without any conscious expectation of the response.

so I'm no neuroscientist, but my understanding is that the brain really doesn't form a cohesive entity of "you"
"you" are just sort of the driver that gives commands to your body
however, your brain is actually a bunch of different parts that talk with each other and don't always agree - think the little angel and devil on your shoulder, they might argue with you but ultimately you get the choice
tulpamancy basically is the art of allowing these other "parts" of your mind their own agency - rather than just a nagging mental voice occasionally, or a 'feeling', someone who has successfully "made" a tulpa will percieve it more as though they are interacting with or communicating with an entirely separate entity.
You won't necessarily "see" the tulpa, especially if you're a novice - but a lot of the art of making one is keeping part of your attention and imagination on 'maintaining' the tulpa at all times.
