explain to your wife and kids that you did not get a job and work all your life knowing what awaits those that do nothing/ have no fall back plan. Sometimes it is sad but its not your job to be bernie sanders... There are Government assistance programs and people that work for tips only get to be a part of that still and have a job. in a way they get more then the minimum wage cashier. So try explaining that the cashier is making minimum with no government help and the bagger gets government help = to minimum wage + tips from a lot of people. Tips are Tips not Give me that you owe its expected or else it would be part of the price of your food or your groceries.
