I am from India and have to admit that most people have terrible taste in music. There is next to no independent music coming out because the film industry has an incestuous relationship with the music industry, and has a stranglehold over almost all studios, etc. Plus, a lot of the big songwriters are outright plagiarists and just appropriate riffs etc. from others with no backlash. There is a long tradition of beautiful classical music but this is rapidly dying out, and there isn't much new stuff being written.

That's not American though. The reason Europoors do well within more electronic genres is because the main innovations in them can be traced to either Europoors themselves with concrete music/early stuff or it can be traced to Jamaicans' dub music which forms the basis for dancier stuff, trip hop, hip hop, etc.

Came here to post exactly this. It's almost disgusting how much Bollywood's/other film industries' near monopolistic hold on the music industry stifles output from legitimately talented artists or allows shitty plagiarists to become popular. There is some more interesting stuff to be found among the classical musicians, traditional music troupes, and a couple independent artists that exist in an extremely stifled scene, but they'll never be able to get event a tiny bit of actual exposure because it's not filmi garbage. This being said, I also think the lack of education and the sheer population of the country makes having more varied tastes/scenes tougher as well in this case of film industries with widespread holds on music.

You do realize the people don't actually listen to neither of those types of music in a serious way?
It's not like the average mexican puts on earphones and listens to "el sonidito", "la marcha de zacatecas" or "el jarabe tapatío" everyday, that's just an stereotype.
That kind of music is an example of music that became memorable and is part of our culture and our collective imagery.
Café Tacvba isn't really good, but is as close as we can get to an alternative band that tried different sounds, and combined different genres.
It is an alternative experimental band that's disguised as a "teenage" band or "música de rebeldes y mugrosos"
(I prefer their earlier stuff tho)
There's plenty of genre diversity across national music, I'm not saying it's the best music, but at least there's representation of almost every genre, even underground and alternative music since the 90's.
I agree that the wider public only listen to pleb comercial shit (Like any other country) but there's some good music out there, it's just a matter of looking for it.
There is a lot of good artists out there that combine traditional music with new genres if the thing you're worried about is the permanence our musical heritage.
