Colton Harris
grunge is the genre they are closest too, their first two albums are undeniably pretty grungey
Brandon Robinson
this thread killed chris cornell
Luis Perry
>holy shit what happened to this board? Grunge is ten times better than most of the shit people post here.
Cooper Rodriguez
Only if you never heard shoegaze in your life. Corgan wasn't influenced by punk, but by goth rock, new wave, shoegaze, Black Sabbath, Beatles and metal. Their first 2 albums feature a shit load of effects and a dreamy atmosphere, sometihng grunge doesn't aim for. The production in Siamese Dream was Corgan trying to channel Loveless's production.
The only thing "grunge" about SP are Corgan's lyrics, only because of the angst.
The only thin
Lincoln Brown
all of these faggots are saying OP is a pleb by throwing out a bunch of semi-obscure grunge names yet nobody has mentioned Pond
shiggy diggy
Levi Sanchez
>It's cool to hate Courtney Love so the music that people wrote for her to sing must be bad too
Jason Torres
>black sabbath, beatles, and metal
you mean like many other grunge bands were influenced by?
The Smashing Pumpkins had a much wider variety of influences than other grunge bands but they still had very grunge tendencies.
Kayden Edwards
courtney love is a vapid person who made vapid music, bud
Jayden Green
LOL i do wish for the old days of Sup Forums when we didn't have all these idiots
Luis Thompson
>Truly - Songs From Kid Coma My brother of african descent
Gavin Peterson
Did you just discard everything else I've said? They're a mix of shoegaze, dream pop and hard rock, with progressive rock, psychadelic and slight goth influences.
Grunge was mostly a mix of sludge metal, punk and hard rock.
Not every rock band that used distortion in the 90's was grunge you know.
>smashing pumpkins >grunge >grunge is a genre >post grunge and hole lmao not the worst ITT, but why add post grunge...
Carter Green
>le I'm totally an oldfag you guise meme Ebin
Andrew Adams
Yeah, because Death Grips being fellated for the 2350th time is another thread we fucking need
Luis Hughes
...
Wyatt Rodriguez
>Death Grips being fellated for the 2350th time not true by the way

>goth rock >progressive rock >synthpop >hard rock
>not a much wider variety of influences than most grunge bands You dumb nigga >dream pop >shoegaze
Jordan Rogers
Nice job separating the artist from the art dumbass.
Pretty On The Inside is at times literally metal Sonic Youth.
Live Through This is like a more feminine and poppish Nirvana. They're both great albums.
Everything else is pretty much shite tho
Austin Powell
LOL 'yes'
Grunge was 90% influenced by metal and punk, The Smashing Pumpkins went much further than that.
Not that it makes SP objectively better or anything, it's just the truth.
Christian James
A newfag like you wouldn't know
Kevin White
kurt liked music from all those genres except shoegaze, which you could easily replace with no wave, pretty much all kinds of punk, japanese pop music, noise rock (including japanese noise rock) and way more face it, smashing pumpkins had way less influences than many other bands
Landon Hughes
>Grunge was 90% influenced by metal and punk LOL you're so stupid. smashing pumpkins weren't even influenced by any kind of punk so that's like 50% off right there according to you and no grunge bands weren't influenced by just that. a lot of 70's rock was in the mix too including all different kinds of stuff
Evan Nelson
I can separate the art from the artist, it's just Courtney Love is genuinely shit.
Live Through This is nothing more than dumbed down Nirvana with female vocals.
Carter Price
i started posting on Sup Forums in 2008, you?
Justin Flores
kurt may have liked it but that doesn't mean it influenced him, he liked public enemy too which pretty obviously didn't influence nirvana at all lol
Carson Lopez
>I can separate the art from the artist >next line contradicts just that oh boy
Andrew Gray
i created Sup Forums
Ryan Torres
>Live Through This is nothing more than dumbed down Nirvana with female vocals. What? That's a pretty musical statement
Jacob Allen
but it literally doesn't
John White
>Kurt == grunge 'no' Most grunge bands had a much more limited array of influences than Kurt. Nirvana were an exception, not the norm.
>every style of music you like has influence in your art Kurt also liked Abba. Doesn't mean Nirvana sounds like Abba. Corgan likes experimental electronic music and has performed hours longs shows using synths, mostly exploring textures and moods. Doesn't mean SP take from that. I'm sure Corgan likes a lot more music than what he lets bleed into the SP sound.
You're trying too hard to dismiss the variety of SP's sound. Sounds like you just don't like them. That's okay, just don't try to deny facts.
Hell, take Tonight, Tonight, Geek USA, 1979 and Luna. Just in those you have chamber pop, shoegaze mixed with prog rock, dream pop with electronic beats and dream pop. Give a grunge band with that much variety.
SP were praised for their variety, and rightfully so.
Robert Lewis
>it's just Courtney Love is genuinely shit.
Andrew Roberts
1. pearl jam 10 (i know you autists dont like it - but in early 90's this was it - pearl jam reduced its imapct via 25 years of mediocrity). 2. nevermind 3. soundgarden superunknown 4. alice in chains Dirt 5. temple of the dog 6. siamese dream 7. in utero 8. badmotorfinger
early 90s top bands:
1. pearl jam 2. nirvana 3. soundgarden 4. smashing pumpkins
as time went on, 25 yrs later, top grunge bands became:
1. smashing pumpkins 2. STP 3. AIC 4. nirvana 5. audioslave 6. soundgarden 7. pearl jam
Carson Torres
courtney love as an artist is shit, you tismo
Gabriel Bailey
>Audioslave >Smashing Pumpkins >Grunge hahaha make it stop
Aaron Williams
>Nevermind better than In Utero >Ten at no. 1 spot Everything else you said can be safely disregarded.
Thomas Ortiz
>top 10 not even 10 albums worth listening in this shitty "genre" anyway here's the rundown >soundgarden: screaming life, ultramega ok, superunknown >mudhoney: superfuzz bigmuff plus early singles, s/t >nirvana: bleach, in utero that's pretty much it. honorable mentions: nevermind, vitalogy, jar of flies
stuff that's not considered grunge but is actually way better and pretty much any grunge fan will like: >dinosaur jr and sebadoh >pixies and breeders >sonic youth post-evol >pavement
Liam Hernandez
>using an example that clearly didn't influence totally proves the others didn't either!! are you retarded??
>>Kurt == grunge where did i say this? nirvana was a grunge band. smashing pumpkins wasn't. simple as that. >Kurt also liked Abba. Doesn't mean Nirvana sounds like Abba. nirvana is OBVIOUSLY way more radio friendly and pop sounding than the smashing pumpkins, of course it doesn't sound directly like abba but you can't deny his pop sensitivities didn't influence him dipshit
Bentley Reyes
lol more crappy Sup Forumstard opinions
Oliver Sanders
Ultramega OK and Screaming Life are average at best. Same for Vitalogy.
Also, you're ignoring gems like Dayglo, Truly, Failure, Babes In Toyland, Skin Yard and such. Maybe try to explore more the genre before criticizing it.
Caleb Rivera
Dayglo?
Josiah Brown
no nickelback?
pleb, silverside up is one of the humanity's crowning achievments
Austin Richardson
His pop sensibilities come from Aerosmith, KISS, Shonen Knife, Marine Girls and such. He takes more from there than ABBA. Kurt also liked Public Enemy a lot. Does Nirvana sound like public enemy?
I never said SP were grunge fuckface. I'm arguint they had more variety than most grunge bands. You gave me Kurt as an example of a grunge band showcasing different influences. However, I told you Nirvana were the exception, not the norm. U catching up now?
*Love Battery. My bad.
Ayden Wilson
babes in toyland isn't grunge to me but i guess i could've added them. skin yard, truly and love battery are all worthless fanboy shit. ultramega ok was the first album in the genre and only because of that is worth listening. screaming life is mostly a prelude that should've been added to that album like superfuzz bigmuff with the other singles.
Gabriel Peterson
alphabetical.
Alice in Chains 1990 - Facelift Dinosaur Jr 1987 - You're Living All Over Me Gas Huffer 1992 - Integrity, Technology & Service Guided By Voices 1990 - Smae Place the Fly Got Smashed Husker Du 1985 - New DayRising/Flip Your Wig Jane's Addiction 1988 - Nothing's Shocking Meat Puppets 1985 - Up On the Sun Melvins 1989 - Ozma Mother Love Bone 1990 - Apple Mudhoney 1988 - Superfuzz Bigmuff [EP] Nirvana 1989 - Bleach Pearl Jam 1993 - Vs. Benjamin Wilson
>His pop sensibilities come from Aerosmith, KISS, Shonen Knife, Marine Girls and such. LOL his pop sensibilities came mostly from the beatles dude lol. aerosmith is just generic rock music he likes wtf not pop at all. and no it doesn't sound like public enemy, stop using that retarded argument, truth is nirvana incorporated stuff from punk, post-punk, hardcore, post-hardcore and noise rock that corgan didn't even like to listen to
Justin Price
All of these retards keep posting more obscure grunge band names to make themselves look more underground and literate in the genre, fuck off. A lot of the grunge that came from the 80s sounds very amateurish and the 90s acts clearly perfected it. However Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney, 80s Soundgarden and 80s Nirvana are still good.
Isaac White
>Husker Du 1985 - New DayRising/Flip Your Wig not grunge in the least
Jacob Jackson
>Mother Love Bone dude that band sucks ass so much lol
Noah Johnson
>ultramega ok Green River's debut was the first in the genre, not Ultramega OK.
Brandon Perez
sucking ass isn't so bad, why don't you try it?
Julian Evans
Yes they also come from the Beatles. The fact I forgot to mention them doesn't invalidate the rest of my statements. I personally dislike Aerosmith too, but you can't deny their influence on Cobain.
Also you're saying: >nirvana incorporated stuff from punk, post-punk, hardcore, post-hardcore and noise rock
That's true. I'm saying Corgan incorporated goth rock, progressive rock, dream pop, shoegaze, hard rock into their sound and that most grunge bands didn't have nearly as variety as SP. You still haven't disprove my point.
Samuel Turner
>Nirvana were the exception, not the norm why are you even arguing then?
they're both from the same year but i guess you're right
Ryder Morgan
The mount rushmore of autism.
Chase Sanchez
i dunno what to tell you. already told you a bunch of genres that nirvana incorporated as well. at this point we're just having a dick measure competition. the only point i really wanted to make was that SP isn't grunge because it's not influenced by punk
Andrew Garcia
I know you guys don't like the mtv unpulgged stuff, but i do
Jonathan Cox
Nigga I agree SP aren't grunge. I never said they were. I only talked about the variety in their sound.
Jason Phillips
>Ultramega OK and Screaming Life are average at best. nigga find me a track like beyond the wheel from before the 90's
Jordan Hernandez
since when did Sup Forums start loving Stone Temple Pilots so much? I've always loved them, I would say they were my favorite band at one point, but in the past I've always gotten shit for liking them on here. Was it Weiland's death or did Sup Forums just collectively realize they get way too much hate despite having three incredible albums in a row?
Colton Hall
Sup Forums just got shittier that's all
Brayden Thomas
Nobody fucking cares?
Kevin Sullivan
>Vedder >not Wood, an actual founding father/dead vocalist shit pic
Jeremiah Jenkins
What you said. Core was decent enough. Purple was unfairly shat on, it's a great album with some fantastic tracks. Tiny Music was also shat on unfairly, it showcases more ambition than most grunge bands ever had. Also, their guitar work is really fucking solid, mostly due to the jazz formation of their guitarist.
Grayson Adams
with the death of chris cornell people started realizing what they've lost as soon as eddie dies, they'll love pearl jam too
Cooper Phillips
everyone needs to get their ass sucked at least once in their life, i agree. pay a hooker if you need to, i don't care how it happens, just get that chocolate starfish lickity licked
Jaxson Ortiz
wow, good response
Carson Taylor
thx
Jordan Nelson
im not from Sup Forums that's why i love them -OP
Christian Anderson
