Kiev is kind of mediocre, its not terrible but I just didn't really see the appeal there.
Lviv though is really fucking pretty and almost to the point its a bit like out of a fairy tale.
Also, if you don't know Ukrainian or at least a bit of Russian, its going to be very hard to communicate with some people. Being an American, try not to stand out like a dumb, fat fucking tourist, flash money around or get yourself noticed too much. Its not quite Africa or a SW-Euro tier shithole (but it is a shithole!) and you're asking for trouble by advertising who/where you are from- pick pocketing, hassle/bribery from cops, random fuck-USA shit
