Instruments, to Islam, are simply pointless entertainment that encourage being lazy, or worse.
Of course, in practice, this is rarely enforced. It does not change the fact the tenets are childishly restrictive, but it does mean there is a wealth of Middle Eastern music that has instruments and is intended for recreational listening and not devotional listening.
