He got dicked by the government who removed funding from the British Film Institute and Film 4 who didn't have much to go around and not great years in returns. He got passed over because his follow up was a black comedy about government lobbyists and Film 4 was really sketchy about who they funded. No Netflix around in those days who would have produced a ridiculously risky script as well.
It was announced he's doing a new film for Film 4 though (As the Channel 4 group made a killing getting co-production rights for Black Mirror to Netflix and a load of C4 and Film 4 projects were successful there) so maybe it might get made.
