I'm trying to 3D model a paw (pic not related), and I'm wondering whether pawpads are analagous to the bottoms of our toes or the tips of our toes.
You'd imagine they'd be analagous to the bottoms of our toes, but because of how paw toes bend, it's plausible that they're actually the toetips.

if you really want to get things right, compile all of your photo reference together and work from that alongside general scientific theory.
also a pawpad can look plumper or flatter depending on wear/age, as well as its individual sections creating a lot of variation in topology.

No, there's enough variation with even just genetics or the individual (age, scars, wear, health...) to merit minor variation with topology. a puppy's paw is very different from a senior dog's paw, even topologically, depending on how detailed you want to look at things. most people will see everything as 'exactly the same', but for people trained in art or science, if you make everything identical, the layman notices an uncanniness. i know. it's weird.
if you're speaking as a hungover 3d artist who just needs to crank out a set of wolves or something for a deadline tho, yes.

In all seriousness a giant mech would be hard as shit to make work with legs. Isn't the rough (basic) height level of possible mechs about 7-8 meters? I remember an autismo level discussion about it a while back on /k/ that essentially figured that lost planet mechs could totally exist with physics and such, and titanfall mechs were pushing it, but gundams were way out of the fucking question.
