i've used dodge/burn for transparent bubbles before, but your way sounds easier

Yeah, I just eyedrop a very dark tone, then set the brush to about 40% opacity. Use the same settings for the smaller brush, then I eyedrop a light tone for smallest brush hit for 40-80%. It's good enough for bubble work.
