Is scfi dead? Does it mean anything in modernity or is the genre just going to keep copying images of the 1980s?

I don't know

>or is the genre just going to keep copying images of the 1980s?
What do you mean?

We live in a world that is worse than any nightmare future imagined and the only hopes for the future anyone has today is armageddon or that the next iphone will fix problems the product line has had since it launched.

Mass culture has reached a point where we no longer need to produce anything of even partial originality; just repackage and consume past media

>We live in a world that is worse than any nightmare future imagined
Yeah you should've stayed in the future where a Terminator tore open your asshole

>Is scfi dead?
As in film? It was barely even alive. The number of decent Sci-Fi films can be counted on your fingers.

If you don't mind campyness and stuff that doesn't take itself too seriously there are good TV-shows. If you want to really dwell into the Science Fiction spectrum you should turn to literature.

Yes, I believe I stated people are hoping for some sort of apocalypse.

>reading comprehension

The problem with written science fiction is neal stephenson basically took it to it's highest possible level and no one else even comes close.

Where's yours? He pretty much destroyed you dude. Learn to admit you lost.

>He

>The Expanse
Not dead user.

Well, since it seems I stated something beyond your mental grasp, allow me to elaborate, in hopes of elevating you, slightly.

A world without any sort of clearly defined enemy or conflict is worse than, say, a post-apocalyptic future ruled by sentient machines. As survival without purpose, conflict, or struggle breeds existential crisis.

So, yes, a post-apocalypse ruled by sentient machines where what remains of humanity is fighting a losing war is preferable to the apple future, where everyones a mindless consumer whore programmed to believe being a mindless consumer whore is the best thing possible.

>A world without any sort of clearly defined enemy or conflict is worse than, say, a post-apocalyptic future ruled by sentient machines.
Why aren't you in Syria then?

Please don't fag up this thread. If you want to fuel your ego online just go to reddit or something.

>hating consumerism
Go back to North Korea

Because I'm not so retarded as to believe the ISIS conflict isn't entirely manufactured?

Will you trot out this defense when some crazy negro is trying to mug you?
"Yo nigger I won't fight you because this conflict is manufactured, I wish I had all those badly compressed MS Paint pictures showing how the Jews are behind everything"

>Is scfi dead?
Do you know what larger genre most capeshit falls under?

I predict we're going to get a good really good Cybepunk show in the next few years that will spawn a bunch of shitty genre copycats like every other hot property.

Oh right, the current generation is being all whipped up into old racial divisions. I forget about that.

Yea, those dirt poor religious extremists on the opposite side of the world and impoverished black people are totally a threat to your way of life. Around blacks, never relax. Defend your proud white heritage.

You're basically just espousing, directly, what I'm talking about. In absence of any real conflict, the stupid will literally make up imagined conflicts to give their inherently worthless lives meaning. Its like all the hallucinations as a result of sensory deprivation, except its ideological deprivation.

Do you know what killed sci-fi? Designers.
Sleek, smooth, reflective surfaces with abstract visuals and touch control. The dystopian sci-fi died with apple evil corp.

No, we are getting a new star wars in december

This. I despise the Apple aesthetic, but it has completely taken over popular culture

It makes you wonder if people will look back on it one day the way we look back on 50s retro-futurism

To be fair, they were just copying star trek.

>tfw you won't be a minimum wagecuck in a ridiculously oversized dark and cumbersome minig vessel
>tfw you won't be part of a tight knit crew who can barely scrape together a living and is addicted to the company's drugs
>tfw you won't all be wearing rags and using magnetic tape and unicolor keycards to access clunky, noisy and ugly looking devices
>tfw your onboard computer won't be named Mother and all the interfaces are black screen with system font unicolor text
>tfw not everything makes creepy, beep-bops and creaky, rattling and priting fax noises.

> your onboard computer won't be named Mother and all the interfaces are black screen with system font unicolor text

To be perfectly and completely fair, cosmic rays will absolutely rape any sort of microprocessor, so a computer for extended deep space service would need to be something like the computer from Alien.

>from alien
what the fuck did you think I was referencing?
youtube.com/watch?v=2ywWFvjE-yU&t=1m0s
jesus christ that is exactly what I described how dumb are you

>copying images of the 1980s
1980s sci-fi is sci-fi so I don't understand what you're bitching about.

what's funny is you're describing like half of the planets in Knights of the Old Republic

>scifi
>not SF

kys pleb

... and what exactly made you think I didn't understand what you were referencing?

fuuuuuck it looks so good. I hate all the normies who enabled apple design. We could have big, bulky bleak and cumbersome. FUCK

star wars killed sci-fi just like GoT killed fantasy

It used to be about exploration, pushing the boundaries of what can be considered reality and diving into ideas and concepts with unimaginably large scopes that it bordered on mind bending

Now it's nothing but WWII set in space thanks to star wars, just like how every major fantasy to come out from now on will be some risque political drama bullshit thanks to GoT

Sci-fi is dead because you killed it

>or is the genre just going to keep copying images of the 1980s?

Have they? They've seriously fucked up if they were trying.

>Is scfi dead?

It would be nice if you would clarify WTF you were specifically talking about, OP.

>space opera is alive and well, and very lucrative (Star Wars, GotG, etc)
>80s style cyberpunk (like your pic) is still hanging on (Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, the forthcoming Blade Runner 2, and, yeah, fucking The Martian, etc)
>we're now in the transhumanist SF era, like Ex Machina, Morgan, Splice, Transcendence, Midnight Special, etc.
>there was even an attempt at Astropunk (Tomorrowland). The first Captain America is arguably Dieselpunk. Still need a true Steampunk, but parts of Wonder Woman might suffice

>Is scfi dead
>Ex Machina just happened
>Blade Runner sequel happening
>ANNUAL FUCKING STAR WARS MOVIES
no

>star wars killed sci-fi just like GoT killed fantasy

So sci-fi and fantasy aren't dead?

>sequel

>is sci fi dead
>post a science fantasy pic

Lol well if you cant identify the differences between them then i guess so.

>star wars is true science fiction

Lol filthy casual scum

You're not doing it right.

scifi died when interest in space and technology died

now all we have left is social justice idiots hijacking a corpse for their political agenda while STEM dies a slow death of attrition.

RIP a world that cared about science

youtube.com/watch?v=yy7GOO7Y96Y

I'd say capitalism killed scientific advancement. For if all anyone cares about is the quarterly report, long term projects can't happen.

I read your post in Dale Gribbles voice and the fact that it works proves how shit your comment.

>i imagined a stupid person saying what you said so you're stupid

... I read your post in the voice of the classic trailer voiceover guy and its still retarded.

No, see kid when the soviet union collapsed, America had no one to compete with.

We grew lazy because of this lack competition of competition ruined science and tec.

See how much rational this sounds compared to your bushit

Lol hes the joss whedon of sci fi

Stay salty my friend

>muh competition

So what you're saying is without an organized and driving force behind humanity, people default to only caring about the short term.

Yeah i mean thats how the cold war worked.

You do know this is an 18+ website

>see rule 2

And capitalism being entirely about the short term, and nothing else, has nothing to do with this.

im sure if your polisci professor saw you now, theyd be proud.

but Dale is based af

Your complete and total lack of counter-arguments has been noted.

>literally make up imagined conflicts
How fucking sheltered are you? Just because you grew up in the suburbs and dont get along with your parents doesn't mean everyone else is wallowing in ennui and making up wars because they're bored. You're so retarded it hurt to read your posts. Seriously fucking neck yourself right now because your outlook on the world is pathetic.

capitalism is only but the short term if you legally allow it to be about the short term

That really didn't start happening in the US until deregulation under neoliberal administration like Carter/Reagan/Clinton

Your post has opened my eyes and proven your race war isn't entirely imagined.

So, what you're saying is, the natural state of capitalism (in the absence of regulation) is short term at the cost of all other concerns?

People left in sensory deprivation long enough also went mad and believed, completely, their hallucinations were an absolutely real, clear, and present danger to them.

Apparently ideological deprivation has a similar effect upon the human mind.

Apparently being a self-involved pretentious faggot has the effect of making you pontificate on an anonymous cartoon porn message board as if anyone cares what you think

only if you make bad business practices (fraud, pyramid schemes, etc) legal

If you made murder legal we'd have a lot more murders to. That's not an inherent part of civilization it's just what happens when you fail to pass common legislation, or in the case of the last 40 years, remove all the laws we used to have that prevented credit bubbles that, if left alone lead to inevitable economic collapse and debt deflation.

*common sense legislation

>If you made murder legal we'd have a lot more murders

You could've just said "i'm a retard."

Are you saying the murder rate would be the exact same if murder was legal?

I'm saying the vast majority of murders (and crime of any sort) aren't stopped by the existence of laws against it.

ok kek that's what I thought

I'll never understand how people are this delusional. Of course laws discourage certain bad behavior, that's why they exist in the first place.

No, son, consequences discourage "bad behavior." Murder is illegal in, say, africa, but because africa can't organize any sort of reliable consequences, law is irrelevant.

To say any sufficiently organized group could establish their own sort of retaliatory consequences without actual laws.

Yes, because living in a future where your own government sold you out to a bunch of psychopath aliens isn't as bad.
At least the Tech-Com had a fighting chance.
This can happen to anyone of you, and people are butchered like this daily, but you never hear about it.

someone needs to kill those people, except bill nye, he's cool

>sort of retaliatory consequences

and a sign of civilization is having those consequences written down and standardized so as to ensure a consistency of justice so that everyone feels that they're getting a "fair deal" as opposed to people just randomly choosing how to punish each other.

i.e. a "law"

Sure Africa has "unwritten" punishments, they'll burn you alive for any random shit, but I don't think sane people want to live in that world.

One also cannot call africa "sufficiently organized" on any level.

It maybe dying, or in a state of decline since the 1970s and 80s, but there is still a bunch of good scifi that is being made:
Intersteller
Snowpiercer
Edge of Tomorrow
Ex Machina
Coherence
Oblivion
Her
Europa Report
Midnight Special
the list goes on!
