First gun advice? Looking to buy my first gun and I'm not really sure what to get. Trying to decide between a shotgun or rifle, no handguns because I'm only 20. In terms of shotguns I was considering a Stevens 320 or saving up a little more for a vepr 12. Or if I get a rifle I would like to have something reliable like a mak 90 or something along those lines. I'm not to knowledgeable when it comes to guns as you can probably tell. Just looking for something to have fun shooting and maybe for home defense. Any advice? What was your first gun Sup Forums?
Pic slightly related; something I wish I could afford

My first gun was a Romanian WSAR 10 AK47
It was cheap, fun and reliable.

My second was a HK USP .45
I should have got a .40 though.

Get a mossberg 500, they're not too costly and 12 gauge has so many different round types it's unreal plus you can always make your own shot, if it fits you can shoot it.

Few gun shops are really knowledgeable, they just like to seem that way.

went like this:
I need an old bolt action rifle
>what for?
home defense
>ahahahahaha I didn't know bolt action was an assault rifle
I don't want an assault rifle...
do you have any mosins?
>just sold my last one but I do have this arisaka
sold

waited two weeks and picked it up and the motherfucker said
>It's a nice gun, look how the trigger goes

fucking dry fires it about 10 times

Then went to see if they reload ammo, as I saw a reloading bench with shells and bullets on it
>no we're not allowed to do that here
You have a bench though
>It's not a reloading bench, it's a repacking station. We don't use it, what do you want from us?
just to reload my ammo
>that's illegal we can't do that, what don't you understand?

My first gun for home defense is an Arisaka type 38. It shoots well, easy to use, ammo is a bit expensive but it's well worth it. It's super accurate at range and not too bad for mid-close range.

It is also one of the best guns to clean as well as the bolt is only 8 pieces.

No, it doesn't have a scope or any other tactical features, all it has is nice adjustable ironsights, easily reloadable, very reliable, extremely accurate, and once you get the hang of it you can shoot it pretty fast.

I suggest a quality military surplus weapon for your first gun.

get a rifle or carbine. whats your budget?

My advice, start simple. I've known a ton of dudes who went out and spent thousands on their first gun that they ended up not liking.

Find a shooting range that rents out guns and try a bunch. You'll definitely want to try out an AR-15 and a simple pump action shotgun such as a Remington 870, as those are some of the most common, easiest to outfit/modify, and with cheap ammo.

Try out trap shooting with a shotgun. Personally I think it's the most fun you can have outside of hunting actual game, and it's a cheap hobby (at my range, rounds of trap cost $15 including ammo).

Rifles are fun, but if you want to shoot them at long range, you'll spend as much time walking and setting up, as well as zeroing your sights, as you do shooting at targets. Not as much fun IMO.

My first gun was a Glock 19, but my favorite is my Remington V3 for trap.

Get a good AK or AR. Versatile, common cheap ammo. Good platform and can do anything. I have been through handfuls of these rifles, you can't go wrong. Only thing it won't do is really big game.

Or if you want to go elma fudd, get a .308 hunting rifle. Cheaper ammo than wildcats like 7mm08, .243's etc.

Don't go shotgun for first gun unless you like duck/bird hunting or clays and shit.

Depends what you want the gun for
>hunting
>range
>home defence
Shotgun for home defence and rifle for hunting and range
I prefer single shot bolt action rifles for hunting more of a challenge if you miss
I've had Ar and other mag fed rifles but nothing matched the Enfield for me

Fuck me you could have gone for something with cheaper ammo.

Great if you have the ammo though I'm sure.

Falcor defense AR-10

get either a: AR15, AK-47, 10/22, hi point carbine, or keltec carbine

>cheaper ammo
Yeah, it's $30 for a box of 20. I have FMJ's and PSP's.

The gun is great though, it has the strongest action of any WW2 rifle and is fun to take apart and clean.

I really wanted the Arisaka as there weren't many left in California also. It's rare to find any old milsurp guns here, even ones that used to be common like the mosin and arisaka.

My budget is 400$. I'm guessing i should save up a bit more if I want a nice and reliable one?

Buy a mossberg

Definitely considering an ar or an ak. Probably which ever is cheaper and more reliable. And I'm not a hunter so that shouldn't be a problem

Buy a pedicure.

Neither will do you good.

Buying a cheap AR or AK is just a bad idea. It will jam, won't shoot straight, and will just be a waste of money. When it comes to guns don't skimp out on quality.

It's better to buy a used good quality bolt action rifle than it is to buy a poor quality used semi auto rifle.

As far as rifles, such as ARs and AKs, 400 is the lowest they go for but are generally good and reliable. ARs are muuuuuch more versatile also, can easily upgrade parts later on if you want/need to. thier ammo costs are the same, about 30cents/round.

i have a vepr in 7.62x54r and its my favorite rifle. Ammos cheap would highly recommend

The fact that you didn't say what you want it for means you're an idiot and probably shouldn't have a gun.

However, since you're going to, consider the following:

>despite what the ta/k/ticool nuts think, a rifle is worthless for home defense
>if you don't hunt there's very little use for a bolt action. Mine has collected dust since I moved to a state that doesn't allow hunting with rifles
>a shotgun offers versatility

Get an AK platform rifle. It's simple, robust, and easy to maintain. The recoil isn't bad and even little children can be pros with it. Depending on where you live and who you know, you can get an AKs pretty cheap. If you're a poorfag, then get an SKS or a Mosin Nagant.

got a vepr in 308 wouldnt trade it for anything (in its price range)

its important to take ammo price into consideration, and if youre not planning on doing any serious hunting, a vepr in 7.62x39 would be better. same goes for old milsurp bolt rifles like a krag or k31
if youre gonna buy a stevens anything, get a 520 or 620, im not sure how good the new stevens stuff is

to clarify i meant some old milsurp rifles have expensive ammo compared to more common/modern counterparts

are you implying cheap ak's arent shit

get a vepr if ur gonna get a shotty and get a vepr if ur tryina get an ak

yeah seriously

OP just buy a fuckin SKS, don't barbie it up with dumb tacticool shit, and enjoy the cheap rifle with cheap ammo that puts a good hole in a home invader just as well as it'll put a good hole in paper targets.
