There are times when it actually makes sense. Like Napoli with Maradona, he's arguably the GOAT and they will never get a player anywhere near that good ever again. But for teams with a lot of legendary players, like the Yankees, it's a really stupid idea because inevitably people will say "well, if he got his number retired, surely he deserves it too" and pretty soon numbers 1 through 15 are all retired.
