"no"

they should

They shouldn't

why is Ronaldo there?

no

one of the many many bizarre things americans do that i don't understand

you can't retire 10. best case scenario you just don't assign it until the next prodigy comes along like the argie NT. numbers aren't just part of your brand like they are for every american athlete, they have meanings, they're almost titles

penaldo will of course retire his special number as the narcissistic media-monger he is, again his number is a part of his brand. messi doesn't jack off over having his own personal number, he inherited the title/position of the heart of barcelona's attack based on merit

>do like the NBA
this has been a thing in football for decades

Not a chance. Real Madrid and Barcelona are like the Yankees, if you start retiring numbers it would get out of hand really quickly because of how many legendary players they've had.

And as good as Ronaldo is, 1 title and 2 CLs isn't that impressive by the standards of some of the legends Real Madrid has had.

Of course, do your semen-slurping teams not respect their legends?

Tons of teams have retired the #10 so Barcelona can do the same, or at least not give it to anyone unless they score a 300th goal or something so it's not given to just a random 'great' player

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_retired_numbers_in_association_football

>penaldo will of course retire his special number

Madrid didn't retire it for Raul or Juanito, why would they do it for Ronaldo?

hes a retard. his posting should have tipped you off

I doubt they cared. Ronaldo is narcissistic enough to push for the number to be retired.

And Florentino would tell him to fuck off.

>implying Raul or Juanito were even close to as big of celebrities as penaldo is

Oh fugg, an American who has done his research about soccer :DDD

But 380 goals in 367 games are pretty impressive

iirc correctly its against the rules since spanish teams have to have 1-25 assigned to the main squads players. its why they have far fewer numbers retired, and even when they do it its because "you died hombre", not "you played gud"

In barcelona's case I highly doubt they would do that, after Ronaldinho and Messi the number 10 is kind of special now and has to be on the team, besides they will probably give Messi some other kind of honor when he retires like naming the stadium after him or some shit like that

In Real Madrid's case I think it's a 50/50 percent of chances, either way, the next people who wear those numbers will have a lot of pressure

It's not a tradition to retire numbers in football.

But how Is that fair? Its like the Chapecoense pity title all over again. A man plays his heart out for his club, probably the best footballer the world has ever seen after prime dinho and he won't get this great honor unless he dies...wow europe

>like the NBA

They aren't the only league that does that, fuckboi

wgaf. great players come and go, especially when youre a club like real and barca

Messi Is the best In history period.

actually, some teams have some numbers retired but thats very rare. Cruijff's 14 at Ajax is retired. Baresi's 6 and Maldini's 3 are also retired. Spanish League does not allow retirement of jerseys, btw. so both Ronaldo and Messi won't get an official retirement anyway. Teams can still refuse to give players a certain number, though. Maradonna at Napoli is retired as well. He was also retired at Argentina for a while until the FIFA became homosexual about it and forced it to unretire. Messi got it since then.

>retiring numbers of plyers that werent homegrown

tell me your secrets wop

how do I get good homegrown plyers

RIP whoever is the number 10 after Messi

>americans & soccer episode 33

Not many really big teams retire numbers. The oly ones I can think of are both the Milan teams for Baresi and Zanetti. If you're a small team with an All Time Great (Like Moore for West Ham) you'd be more inclined to retire the number.

But a team like Barcelona and Real Madrid have so many World Class players going through their teams throughout the years they could retire a lot of fugging numbers.

Guys like Messi and Ronaldo are definitely good enough to get a retired number (Messi especially as he is the best we've seen up til now), but what about Luis Suarez or Kubala or Puskas or Di Stefano etc. They were definitely great enough to have a number retired for them and people might become mad that they didn't retire their number

Once you retire one number it could get out of hand

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_retired_numbers_in_association_football

This was already posted you fuck

They thought that about Di Stefano, then Pele, then Maradona, now Messi...who knows which player will come along in 10 or 20 years?

WOW!
Look at all those IRRELEVANT teams. Look at all those POSTHUMOUS numbers.

I'll give you a count of numbers that we're retired for a relevant team non-posthumously.
Valbuena (No clue why this one is retarded. Marseille's owner is retarded tbf)

>Italians start here:
Gigi Riva (The greatest player to ever play for Calgiari. They will NEVER see a guy like him again who will stay as long)
Zanetti (Played at inter at a high level for nearly 20 years)
Baresi (Same as Zanetti really)
Madlini(Same as Baresi and Zanetti really)
Maradona(Probably the GOAT, best player to ever play for Napoli and it will most likely stay that way forever.)
The no.17 at leeds(Retired because Massimo Celino thinks it is an unlucky number)

From this that only Italy really has a TINY culture of retiring numbers.

That's not a lot of players numbers retired considering how many massive teams in the big leagues there are out there.

It's also an astronomically different environment in football. A guy like Gigi Riva showed real loyalty to Calgiari. He was the best player in Italy and could have easily moved to Juve or some other big team and Calgiari would have had no way to replace him because there is no draft and the money they recieved would have probably went back into the club and only a small margin would go back into buying a player.

An NBA team or NFL team could easily draft a player with a pick that turns out to be GOAT, but a team like Calgiari would not have the financial capability of buying a World Class player or even keeping a World Class player they have produced.

>Mostly this. I can't believe how long it took the thread to know about the rule, Sup Forums really is clueless about sports.

In Spain, the first squad should always have their number from 1-25, no exceptions, only the younger players have higher numbers.

They can't retire numbers even if the player dies. When Puerta died, Sevilla wanted to retire his numbe, but the RFEF (?) didn't allow it.

Shut up! Mexican

Stat-padder. Numbers needs to translate into titles. No supporter cares about Cristiano's personal targets if they don't add some cups to the room.

how exactly is Penaldo a "legend" ?

Ramos is much more important to Madrid than him, in fact the past 3 years even Bale and Modric have been better, and before then Penaldo was responsible for 1 title in about 6 years (the 2012 copa del rey)
also, he has 1 league win in 8 years and the 2 CL are thanks to Ramos again.
is he the "legend" of being carried to glory?

this is exactly why ronaldo won the balon d'or this season. He put up monster numbers and won the silverware to back it up. Simply the best

>implying plyer trees can grow in the Canadian climate

380 goals against shitters

people only retire irrelevant numbers like defenders

Real Madrid and Barcelona will have great players in their time every year. When Messi retires, they'll still have decent number 10s that play for their team (even if none of them end up being as good as Messi). It's also especially silly to retire a number below 11, since they are usually the default numbers assigned to the first team and each number is basically a role that the player has. Only small clubs who have a GOAT player that can never be beaten (Moore for West Ham, Maradona for Napoli) retire those numbers.

Wish they'd retire your sports tbqh.

>retiring numbers

What the fuck are you talking about, you obese inbred retard?

No footballer goes into the game thinking "God I hope I can get a club to retire whatever number I end up with" because that's fucking retarded

Titles, cups, awards, money, etc etc. They get enough. They don't need to rip a piece of the club out with them when they retire too, unless they're some kind of iconic legend which barely ever happens (Totti at Roma to example)

In short, fuck off

this. though even Totti said you shouldn't retire numbers because he grew up dreaming to be the number 10 for Roma, and he doesn't want to fuck the dreams of kids now.

Spanish teams can only use numbers 1-25 so they would have to sacrifice a spot which could be used for depth

Yeah, good luck filling those shoes. It'll be like all those Argentine #10s between Maradona and Messi who got hailed as "the new Maradona".

Football is not as pathetic as basketball so clubs>persons

>retiring numbers

>amergoys

retiring numbers in barca or madrid would be hard since there are so many legends.

just look at the yankees. they are out of single digit numbers now

...

>disrespecting posthumous number retirements
fuck you, wannabe italian cunt

MEXICANS GET OUT OF MY COUNTRY

Yes but Messi & Ronaldo are more than legends, they're breaking records left and right they deserve It.
>pros
9 balloon doors combined
700+ goals combined In spain
5 combined UCLs
>cons
No relevant International trophies

How stupid do you feel?

>just look at the yankees. they are out of single digit numbers now

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HOW DO YOU NOT FORESEE THAT SHIT

HOW RETARDED DO YOU HAVE TO BE

150 years in and the only have 90 numbers left! You're right, THEY are the retarded ones

>implying Zanetti didn't deserve it

Why does ronaldo always get the hat?

the arab facebook donaldo fans do, they honestly care about him scoring a hat-trick against real literallywhoagosa in games they don't watch than madrid winning silverware

>HOW DO YOU NOT FORESEE THAT SHIT
>HOW RETARDED DO YOU HAVE TO BE

The Yankees had an incredible period of dominance in the 20s. They had just won the American League 7 times, and everyone thought "well ok, no way will they get that many legendary players all at once again", so retiring numbers wasn't a huge deal.

Then they started winning again, and didn't stop winning, and now they've got 41 AL titles, 27 WS titles, and 44 players in the Hall of Fame.

>, they honestly care about him scoring a hat-trick against real literallywhoagosa in games
Meanwhile, everybody else creams themselves over Messi dribbling Espanwho FC. Don't pretend that Messi doesn't get his dick rode as well.

ITT: Penaldo fucbois vs. MessiGOAT keyboard warriors s02e31 in 1080i

They're customers of TSU's brand.

In NBA you can pick any number from 00 to 99, if you retire the number 73 no one cares

In football numbers from 1 to 11 are literally always used, they can't retire those

Messi is homegrown m8

Retiring shirt numbers really triggers my autism

It's so shit

These players didnt retire at the club.

It makes sense sometimes. Like Maradona led Napoli to their only two titles and is way better than anyone they have ever had or ever will have. Why not retire the #10? Who is ever going to live up to that?

But why retire the number? You can honour him in other ways, like changing the stadium name, giving him an honour vice-president role, etc

Porque no los dos

Because you break a tradition (using numbers from 1 to 11) to honour 1 player

no because money have to flow in corporations like this two clubs, and number 7 and 10 can sell lots of shirts

ronaldo won european cup this year

The Amerifat said relevant trophies

Yes thank you

Maybe it's because Maradona is so closely associated with 10? D10s and all that. But Naples did name a street after him iirc.
