So new Gorillaz song, pretty obviously made in a very short amount of time. It got me thinking.
>Mfw their new album was awful >I thought it was because my expectations were too high >This song comes out >Just like classic Gorillaz >The problem wasn't my expectations >Humanz was just fucking garbage >Wonder what the fuck they were doing for the years it took them to make Humanz and why it wasn't like the days they spent making Sleeping Powder
The time was just to build hype and to craft the most comercial Gorillaz album yet. Damon can still do good stuff when he wants to, I don't know why the fuck Humanz was what it was, but everything about it felt extremely forced
Nicholas Lopez
DUUUUUUUUUDE DRUMPF LMAO
Great song, but too short. Seriously, Damon. More 2D, fewer features next time.
William Cooper
why is this always the de-facto critique of this album here. there are so many other easier things to shit on this album for but you deride it for having, at most, two trump references and one obama reference. i guess demon days shouldn't have alluded to climate change either; god forbid an album comment on current events in any slight manner whatsoever.
Carter Phillips
gorillaz thread - no shitpost edition i liked this song a lot, the noisy bits reminded me of doyathing (the 13 minute version) the fall 2 coming soon to a record store near me?
Anthony Nguyen
i think plastic beach is the example you want to reference if you're talking climate change
Asher Butler
They just wanted to phone in their MUH CONTEMPORARY ISSUES MESSAGE, disregarding music. Now that they've done that, maybe they can release their actually good music.
Mason Lee
I've stopped listening to Humanz as a whole and just created a Humanz Proper playlist for myself. Got rid of a lot of the junk that plagued it. Will be adding Sleep Powde.
It's a damn joke, man. Also notice I said "fewer features", which was the real killing blow. Also didn't care about current events at the time when Demon Days first came out so I dunno if we were getting bombarded with climate change messages 1000 times a day. But if we were and I cared more about such matters, I'd be making the exact same complaint. Plus ya know, Demon Days actually SOUNDS good.
Anthony Nelson
friendly reminder that humanz has around four political references and two are in the shitty pusha t song. humanz is shit but if thats why you think it shit you gotta go back to Sup Forums.
Julian Stewart
i thought the new album was shit too, BUT, i saw them live at saint albans in UK and it really was as if the songs were designed to be played live. (but i mean they didnt play all of the album, only the decent ones)
theyve got another song that hasn't been released yet called garage palace
Lincoln Bell
the album was based off of politics. Just because you strip away some references last second doesn't change the fact the album had a shitty purpose.
Caleb Garcia
What's up with modern gorillaz having Damon using some type of filter when he sings?
It's a bit of a deal breaker, and this 3D characters look like pure RUBBISH.
Julian Allen
Plastic Beach is close, but I've never had an album in which I can say I like every single song on it. Not just Gorillaz, any artist. I liked 6 or 7 songs out of Humanz, which was a pretty average amount for me when I like an album. It feels hard for me to call Humanz good or bad, since I love those select songs, while the others were just "eh, alright" or whatever for me.
I like Sleeping Powder though, hope more of the extra tracks follow up with it.
while on this, anyone here have an album where you like every single song on it?
Jackson Anderson
That was a cute little song. What I immediately noticed is that it's way more structured and thought through as music than a lot of the tracks on Humanz, which are frequently "oh god how can we put these random sounds and guest vocals together in a manner that sounds vaguely coherent".
Thomas Perez
dont worry he just wanted to get Humanz out of his system, the next album will probably be good
Dylan Martinez
>modern Damon's been using it since modern life is rubbish
David James
O Green World, dumbass.
Christopher Scott
eh, its been there intermittently since the beginning. That said, I wish he'd make some songs without it. I read somebodies theory that hes using the filter because he cant do the voice anymore.
Samuel Brown
>Damon realises the more features in a song the less good it is >having zero features isnt enough to make up for all of humanz >make a song with less than zero features by taking away 3 members of the fictional band that made it >Damon: gtfo Jamie this song has zero features, I'M going to do the video this time >Jamie: lol kay >one day later >this >he was right
Aaron King
Since I Left You Discovery Any Flying Lotus album pre-You're Dead! (album is good, but has a few tracks I don't like)

Almost every time someone refers to Trump in music it's embarrassing as fuck. Anytime someone is overtly, obviously talking about him, and especially when they go so far as to use his name. There are ways for one to let their frustration at his presidency show through their music, and it should be done with subtlety. To refer to him explicitly as so many artists have been doing is just obnoxious and tacky. It also often seems like a gimmicky cash grab thing, and thereby disrespectful to the craft of music. By the way I hate Trump and did not vote for him.
Ian Kelly
yeah, tons. actually, i only count an album as "good" if it has no bad songs. if there's any songs on the album that you'd rather skip, it's not really all that great of an experience
Parker Wood
It sound like a Blur s/t song, i love it.
Brandon Garcia
Humanz is a great album and people on Sup Forums who hate it are fucking idiots who just get upset about politics and black people
Blake Hughes
yep but it aint consistently good, from start to finish, like s/t, DD or PB. Those albums left us expecting something 11/10 so that's hitting hard on Humanz.
I unblindly like Humanz but it has:
Let me Out: Damon uninspired to say at least but its listenable.
-Circle of Friens: i expected something more, lets say, iconic as an ending.
Lincoln Peterson
Nothing wrong with a political message or theme as long as its nuanced and not overt and awkward
Ian Morgan
There are only 3 artists who have entire albums that I enjoy.
>Pixies >Young The Giant >Danzig
Gabriel Taylor
No people hate it because it's not Gorillaz. About 3/4ths of each song is just shitty generic rapping, it feels like it should say (feat. Gorillaz) not the other way around.
Connor Nelson
that video was strangely satisfying
David Sullivan
I love Humanz too -- Hated it on first listen, but immediately when i was done I wanted to hear it again. Kept improving on every listen.
Going back to listen to DD now just sounds dated as fuck. Humanz has low points (Let Me Out is one, Carnival another), but DD also had a few stinkers and a snoozefest last few tracks
Circle of Friendz becomes fantastic once you make your own playlist inserting the bonus tracks into the regular tracklist. Pic related is mine; get ready to listen to it this way always
Nobody has a 320 yet cause it's only on Youtube, right? I honestly don't think it's much better than the worst Humanz tracks...but it's okay I guess
Mason Reed
Frens?
Kevin Scott
Twitch by Ministry.
Ian Ramirez
I really didn't like Sleeping Powder at first but the more I listen to it, the more I like it. Why is this the case for Gorillaz in general?
Jackson Nelson
A lot of hidden paterns and sounds that sound like noise the first time around, then it all connects and you get how clever it all is. The fact that Damon can do this is the reason he is a musical genius but also why his collaborations don't always work, people are not on his wavelength and the result is often awkward, some can hang with him but even his biggest hits are huge because of his work on them not the guest rapping.
Gabriel Myers
I really love this new track. It strikes me as possibly a response to the poor reception Humanz had. Damon seems to be conscious of a certain sense of failure or something similar I can quite pin down in the lyrics.
Jose Perez
god damn why was humanz not more like this
Cameron Wright

Colton Sanchez
[spoiler]I want to lewd 2-D.

Charles Richardson
Sounds like it came straight out of D-Sides. Not their best but miles ahead of the trash that is Humanz.
Chase Ortiz
I like every song on an album FAR more often than not.
Jack Hernandez
the album did poorly because he made fun of trump. making fun of trump is basically career suicide.
Blake Jones
I'll be honest, I dont find Humanz to be a horrrrrible album in the grand scheme of things but it was definitely the weakest Gorillaz album released so far. While some might poke it for the fact that it was trying to poke recent political issues like Trump I felt that the main reason it failed was it had too many features and the album itself just could not handle it.
You had features underused here and there while others essentially dominated the whole song all while Gorillaz/Albarn where essentially shoved into the back as little background sounds to barely make it qualify as a Gorillaz album. Sounded more like Albarn got too many people together and couldn't figure how to balance them out and let them essentially take what he wanted to keep as the theme for the album and let them take over. Which does lend itself to the issue of the political messages.
For an album made to be an end of the world party where someone like "Trump" would win and how Humans would react it definitely felt more like a "Trump Won now have the View Point of Black People" since the features just kept adding in their point of view, which isnt bad but for an album named Humanz you would figure that it would at least attempt to show multiple Point of Views or a universal human condition rather than how people freak out "Like a Nigga Shot a White Man". I can already see people calling me out "See its cause of NIGGERS that you dont like it" but honestly given the political climate and the point of the album I would have enjoyed it more if there was more than the African American PoV slammed in almost every damn song. Hell you barely get to really feel as if Albarn even managed to put in his own 2 cents into the album's theme. This is why Sleeping Powder is already gaining more acceptance than most of the Humanz album.
Wish I could honestly try and get across my point some more but this is as much as I can convey tired.
Gavin James
I like humanz, I enjoy it for what it is, but everything you said is spot on. Sleeping powder is really great, I wish there was more of Damon's perspective on there, and as you said, more of the universal human condition, it could've been a 10/10 album.
Samuel Brooks
I didn't really care about it because o green world was a great song. The problem was that humanz songs were shit and had a shit theme
Asher Sanders
Bottomless Pit
Landon Lewis
>demon days >snoozefest at any point in the album
Camden Reed
I wount say nothing about your DD opinion user.
I like carnival, what's the problem people find?
You hear We got te power 2 times in a row? Wtf, those aint even the best bonus remixes, the Bonobo one sounds like a bonono song... nothing new in the mix with Gorillaz.
Im gonna see Gorillaz at the end of the year i hope live Humanz sound different, cosidering is the most electronic album.
Benjamin Hill
Same Although I thought it was a mediocre as a Gorillaz album
Logan Russell
I agree, Damon might do something like the Thom Yorke alt tracklist of HTTT taking 4 songs off and changing the order. For this to happen we will have to wait until hear the new 9 songs and 5 versions of the box set to have more varity.
Ian Barnes
>BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH GORILLAZ USED TO BE SO GOOD BECAUSE THEY WERE SO WHACKY AND RANDUM JUST LIKE REDDIT BUT NOW THEY TALK ABOUT BLACKS AND POLITICS AND IT REALLY TRIGGERS ME BECAUSE I HAVE A NUT SIZED BRAIN AND I'M A BRAINWASHED AUTISTIC NECKBEARD FROM /R/THEDONALD
Liked it but fuck that art style for the mv. It's not even an ironic kind of bad, it's just bad.
