>DO YOU KNOW WHAT SHE DID?
>YOUR CUNTING DAUGHTER
This scene is so rough and fucking frightening. And none of it was even in the book.
>DO YOU KNOW WHAT SHE DID?
>YOUR CUNTING DAUGHTER
This scene is so rough and fucking frightening. And none of it was even in the book.
It was, she killed her mother's lover and started saying she did in his voice, this was a pivotal part in the plot.
I never understood why he put the crucifix in her room. Was he molesting her, and the demon killed him?
I had to turn it off at that part the first time I watched the movie. I really didn't know what I was getting into. To me this is the only really scary movie.
For me it was the stair walk scene, didn't help that I first saw this when I was like nine.
>tfw you're too much of a pussy to watch it
That one is only quoted as being scary because of its exclusion. And it's exclusion was only due to technical and narrative reasons. It's overrated.
The cruifix scene that the OP describes is pure terror. It's when everything goes south with the demonic energy and its raw brutality and vulgarity is overpowering.
No music, that unsettling voice, Burstyn's screams of horror, the psychic forces throwing the room into disarray, the blooy masturbation, the head turn, the foul language and abuse of a child and her slapping the SHIT out of her mother―it's ridiculous how loaded it is.
Just do it dude. What could possibly be stopping you from watching such a great piece of film work?
>Scared to death of this as a child, watch it at twenty with a sense of vigor.
>forget all about the face that flashes on the screen,
>turn it off at the grandma going down the subway
What is it about that face that's so scary? It's amazing how well it works.
>be high school me
>class night, in our classroom, sleepover
>huge ass projector in our classroom
>suggested we watch this shit inducing masterpiece
>movie starts
>nobody gave a shit about the boring ass first act
>Everybody thought it was a different movie
>Then came the real shit going down
>They're actually afraid as shit.
>I take this as an opportunity to show my dominance over my class
>"Guys, watch me jack off to this film you pussies"
>Unzips my pants
>starts furiously masturbating
>It's the injection scene
>"Fuck maybe I can make something out of this"
>Proceeds to think of the most phallic thing I could see on screen
>Oh shit it's the chapel scene with the vandalized mary
>Gets turned on
>It's the head turner scene
>I jack off furiously as she masturbates as well
>Reverse crawl scene
>I bust a nut
>Teacher comes in
>Sees what we're watching
>No one questions me
>I'm now known as the semen demon
I really like to trigger people in my film class by saying I fucking hate horror movies and that none of them really work. For some reason no one brings up The Exorcist, a movie that is a horror movie and yet also aspires to be a great film, it is very effectively unnerving and even horrifying, has a great tone and I just think it's pretty much a 9/10 classic, I wouldn't put it in my top 20 films of all time but its fucking close as fuck, I just love this movie, some of it might have to do with nostalgia, but who knows.
...
That's surprising actually. Maybe the film is falling off the newer generation's radar for being so old now and having a huge rerelease like in the late 70s and late 90s.
It really transcends all other films in its genre―very few horror flicks do this because they're just that: flicks. The only other true example of something that tries to transcend the hokey genre that is horror is Rosemary's Baby.
In addition to great filmaking, themes, and writing, like a great movie in general, the Exorcist is pro at being more horrific than horror movies try to be. The sense of dread and the unending tension keeps escalating and it doesn't let up to give you a second to breath. It affects you physically, as well as psychologically, emotionally, and for some (but not me personally), spiritualy.
What if this was released today?
STOP
It would probably be a bigger deal back then then it would be today.
>this great movie doesn't scare you
>shitty modern horror movies do
Honestly? I think it's because they all see religion as a joke now. The ideas of demonic possession and good vs. evil mean nothing to them
My dad told me that at the time of its release, there were people picketing theaters across the country.
Rosemary's Baby is another one I saw coming up, recommended by my nerdy ass mom, i remember watching them both with her the first time I saw them. I liked Rosemary's Baby for sure but it doesn't hold a candle to the exorcist in my mind, though it's pretty good, to be sure.
And it is surprising to me, instead they try to defend the validity of fucking slasher movies and netflix-tier bullshit. They can come up with so many excuses and defenses for their love of shitty horror but it's something I grew out of, though I will always have a place in my heart for the REAL classic horror. Son Of Frankenstein is one of my favorites, but of course this entire era is never referenced either. You know what they fucking like? They like fucking Scream, can you believe that shit?
...
first horror movie that actually made me consider if it was possible that it could exist in real-life.
Your mom sounds hot as fuck.
Classic horror is always good because it invented a movie genre and the characters in those films are actually human with feelings and emotions.
So I've seen this movie enough to know it pretty well. But still don't get the face. Is that supposed to be the demon that's possessing her
I feel guilty but I honestly found this scene fucking hilarious. It's a combinationof the voice, the levels of sheer vulgarity and just the overall weirdness of it.
Are you kidding? We just had a movie where a brit saunters into a southern church, says the words hail satan and then fucking kills all the christians, and its a fun summer flick (well thats what most people think, I think it was fucking retarded) if exorcist was released today it wouldn't be controversial at all, the christians in this country fucking lost the culture war bad
Fucking I watched this movie when I was 7-8 just after my parents divorced and I was legitamtley terrified for 4-5 years every night.
>Watched this when I was 14 and didn't bat an eye but thought it was good
>Watched it last night and was on the verge of shitting my pants
>things that happened one hundred percent true no need for proof reality you did that no doubt in my mind most interesting person ever moms gonna freak heres your (you)
Fuck me the hospital shit was so unnerving.
FUCK
yes, it is Pazuzu, the main demon inside of her.
There are more than one though.
You guys ever see the sequels? pretty shit. Exorcist 2 destroys pazuzu's eerie presence.
Everyone tells me Exorcist 3 is great though
yea, the third one was the only decent one.
Exorcist: The beginning was ok too.
Both are shit compared to the original though.
I don't even like that they explicitly identify the presence. I suppose the first film hints at it but the connection to the Iraq scene can be easily lost or misunderstood.
Did the book explicitly name or identify it?
Also there is no Exorcist 2 and Legion/Exorcist 3 is lame.
Booooop.
I can still freak myself out just by saying Captain Howdy
I read the book two months ago and I remember it being in the book. Are you sure it isn't?
This scene is way better in the book. In the movie it's like she was stabbing herslef, while in the book she was sensually masturbating with the crucifix coming in and out slowly.
I don't believe so. I think that whole sequence was drawn from the case of the 14 year old boy that was touted as a 'true story" back then.
The author even objected to the head turn being in the film which is in the very same scene.
The head turn is in the book, although it's not a big deal like in the movie. It's also a lot more clear in the book that is was an illusion cast by the demon, while in the movie it's one of those things that just make you wonder "how the fuck didn't she die?".
It was her mother who saw the head turning, iirc. It goes something like "while she was on the floor she looked at Reagan and could have sworn she saw her head turning completely backwards, like Denning's head was found on his body".
Reagan's mother was all dazed after getting hit on her face by the demon and her vision was blurry.
>Sup Forums can actually admit this was a scary movie instead of being edgelord faggots and insisting it was gay and stupid
I like you guys.
I watched this on Netflix, and it didn't have the stair walk scene, and the face only flashed once, did I watch a censored version or something?
>dude lol i laughed at this shit son
>this old shit isnt scary
>the cross scene was LOL
>the voice was stupid and bad quality >hahah what a gay movee
Someone once said it was shit for not having jumpscares.
No, there is a director's cut. You watched the theatrical version.
Goddamnit
You watched the best version. The others have shitty CGI and they show the face on random occasions, like that time in the kitchen. It's laughable.
not true
>>
the one where she crawls down the stairs is better
There's something so amazing about a film being able to scare two generations of people
The Exorcist is something else.
There is gonna be a tv series now.
Let's all hold hands and forget about that.
Gotta rape everything.
Quit asking to hold hands all the time, it's starting to get weird.
This, I honestly wouldn't care if it were handled by anything decent other than Fox. Wayward Pines was horrible as shit.
I watched this for the first time a few months ago.
For years I heard it was one of the scariest movies ever so I was prepared for disappointment.
Boy is this film all kinds of scary and fucked up.
aside from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre this is the best horror film of all time.
It holds up, man. Not many things do but this does.
the cunt stabbing part wouldn't be that controversial if it was an adult, but it was a 12yo girl. It wouldn't get made today
>LET JESUS FUCK YOU. LET JESUS FUCK YOU.
NOPE.
It's pretty damn good. I think of it as a direct sequel to the original and ignore 2 entirely. I encourage others to do the same.
it's a little more nuanced in the book than the movie, but the demon just plays with people, letting them think Regan is just a sick little girl
every once in a while it slips up and does something to show otherwise
my favorite part of the story is when Karras is doing his initial investigation to see whether or not an exorcism should be attempted, and the demon just fucks with him constantly
Listening to the Purple Stuff podcast too?
Nope. Link it.
The exorcist just popped in my head yesterday randomly.
I only got to see it because it had an anniversary rerelease. I had no idea what I was in for and was absolutely blown away. Best horror movie by far. the pacing, the build up, the characters you actually give a shit about, nothing else comes close. I rate shining second just because it's such a solid movie, but in horror aspects exorcist demolished shining. We will NEVER witness a horror movie as good as this.
That's because you don't understand horror, I get tired of explaining this, but.its something people have to know if you give a shit about horror as a genre
Horror, true horror, isnt meant to "scare" you. It's meant to unsettle you, sometimes extremely. I'm not talking about with gore or whatever, though it does have it's uses, it's through your empathy for the characters and the films ability to help suspend your disbelief just long enough to be genuinely creeper out.
The exorcist is responsible for the entire god damn planet being frightened of a Milton Bradley board game, let that sink in for a second.
Neo horror is all jump scares or goreporn, and it's been shit for almost two decades. The last solid horror movie was believe it or not the Blair witch project, which if you can't appreciate, you don't get what horror is actually about.
It's sad to see how bad this genre is and how rare decent good films in this genre really are, but people dont know how to world build, character develop, or pace any more. Its all jumpscares with some dipahits nobody gives a fuck about on a pacing that makes no god damn sense with no build up because you drop a stupid jump scare every three minutes and this new generation eats this garbage up. I'll stop my old man rant now.
The book explains it. The butler put the cross in the room because he's religious. I think Burke went up to Reagan's room to molest her? Its honestly been awhile since I read the book.
It's supposed to be the demon, yeah. I think it was also intended to be possessed Reagan's makeup. I know they wanted to just paint her face white or something like that. Wouldn't have been as scary, though.
Bride of Frankenstein, Nosferatu and Psycho, m8.
I really can't help but feel the people that say "lmao bro it was funny" are lying. Not completely lying, but lying just a little bit. It scares me to this day.
I remember when it got re released in the cinema and they added to the stairwalk or i just hadnt noticed it before. Sent chills up my back, so good
It's mostly machismo or actual genuine autism, you need some empathy to understand horror.
>Bride of Frankenstein, Nosferatu and Psycho, m8.
Also Possession.
Seems like some women say it, too. It's entirely possible nothing in the film legitimately scared them, but I don't know if I'd believe that. The scariest part was seeing Reagan's shadow walking around in the window. Top tier spooky shit.
I've actually never watched Possession. Years ago, I just assumed it was an Exorcist rip-off. How similar is it?
> women lacking empathy
Big surprise. Interesting to think you could use horror as a sort of screener to find out if your bitch is a cold calculating lizard person
The burke molesting Reagan thing is an old myth. People just assume that. Burke went to Reagan's room just because he knew she was very sick and was checking on her. Not only that, but the demon was obviously making noises.
>I've actually never watched Possession. Years ago, I just assumed it was an Exorcist rip-off. How similar is it?
It starts out as a troubled marriage drama and evolves into something completely different. It is nothing like the Exorcist at all.
There aren't really any similarities, it's not a possession movie in the conventional sense
I completely agree that Blair witch was the last good horror film. I love rhe exorcist and Blair witch and I feel like I'm surrounded by apes when they dont appreciate these films. I'm the user bitching about his film class from earlier btw.
> film class
> actually appreciates good horror
Prepare for No Jobs
Fuck you're right
When did Cure come out? I think it was around the same time as Blair Witch, but that's a fantastic recent-ish horror kino
Saw, It Follows, Let the Right One In, Trick r Treat, etc all came out after Blair Witch Project.
...
the cunt stabbing scene was funny and I didn't find any of it scary after the demon makeup went on. Silly but not scary The pre makeup part is more subtle and creepy
The Witch
These films fit in the "horror" genre, but none of them are truly "horrifying." They have gore, jump scares, or moments of dread, but never actually instill within you a sense of deep-seated horror.
That's because horror is subjective. The Mole People scares me, but it probably won't scare you. I'd say It Follows is horrifying. The idea that there's something that follows you, won't stop and you don't know much about it - that's horrifying to me. But like I said, subjectivity. I think the stuff you're saying now is the kind of stuff people said about Psycho back in the day. The people that grew up with Dracula and Frankenstein. Horror evolves.
The director's cut of this is worse than the theatrical. The random faces are really silly looking and while the stair walk is cool it messes with the flow
>The idea that there's something that follows you, won't stop and you don't know much about it - that's horrifying to me.
You're right, that's a horrifying idea. But the execution of that idea--what you see on screen--isn't. I guess you're right about the subjectivity of it, but there are certain films--like The Exorcist, The Shining, Blair Witch, Inland Empire--that transcend that. Yeah, I'm pretty much talking out of my ass, but tell me pic related didn't make you shit yourself the first time it popped up on screen in that hallway.
Yes, and they are all shit.
>transcending subjectivity
Thats just called being opinionated.
Value of the arts is entirely subjective. I could argue the remake of The Shining is better in quality and not be proven objectively wrong, the arguement itself is subjective.
I hate that remake though.
I wish this meme would end.
The Witch was merely okay. It had potential but ultimately fell short.
How about you hang up the boots, old man? Don't be a jew. Come watch some modern horror with me. At least tell me you think Scream is the greatest slasher of all-time. Because it is.
It seriously is.
It's better than Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Better than Halloween.
Better than Psycho?
I don't know, but at the bare minimum, let's agree Matthew Lillard is a cool guy.
I dunno about better than Halloween, (mostly because I've never seen it) but Scream is my absolute favourite slasher. It's a shame it inspired nothing but shit.
Sorry I'm going to weeb out for a second but it's truly a great easter egg in the movie.
When the priest is in the sound room for the first time there's a banner above the door that says "help me" in Japanese.
I did NOT like It Follows. It was like the people who made Drive were trying to do the same thing to the slasher genre, fucking garbage. Trick R Treat was okay, but not on the same level as actual good horror.
I guess the first Saw was alright, but it wasn't horror as much as it was kind of a cop drama/psychopath movie, there were tons of those in the 90s.
the sound room?
Where he listens to her tape for the first time.
oh yeah, okay, its been a bit since i seen it last.
MVP grandparents. Let me watch it with them at 5 years old. Tried watching it at 10. Still couldn't help but turn it off that scene where the bed starts rocking. Man, I remember the first night after I watched it where I couldn't decide whether to cover myself in blankets for protection while lying in a pool of sweat, or take the blankets off but be vulnerable to Pazipazi
