Put linux on a CD and boot from it, then use linux to go into your hardrive and delete the virus files- usually they sit on the hardrive in the same directory as the /program files etc.

only things you can do OP:
1. shut down your machine, remove the HDD
2. standby: wannacry is so widespread there is a good chance a key will be found in the next few days (at least compared to lesser known ransomware)
but what you should not do is:
1. pay: not only will you get nothing, you'll encourage them to fuck others in the future
2. run your machine: even one minute. sometimes encryption is not complete and you might be able to save some files, but the longer your OS is running, the sooner the chances of recovery approach zero. in other words, the chance may still be greater than zero if you shut down your OS and remove the HDD.
once a solution is found:
the afflicted HDD will probably not be plugged into a windows system, but into a linux-type system (something that won't have the same vulnerabilities as the windows box that was hit) and recovery can begin.

Virtual machines are *supposed* to be virtual, but theoretically they could have security holes as well, or the machine running the virtual machines could be compromised. In this case though, there are no reports on WannaCry breaking out of VMs, and in practice VMs have provided a strong added layer of security.

no need to be so complicated: just get a NAS that runs linux for the price of a HDD plus 20 bucks. Hell, even one of those WIFIs with NAS-capable usb ports can do the trick.
but no solution is perfect: if your WIFI-NAS becomes popular enough (but that's unlikely) someone could find a way to fuck with it...

It's the wanacry worm that was going around. It used an exploit in older windows system to execute code remotely. Unfortunately, you don't have to do anything to get infected by this. It works by scanning the network for vulnerable boxes. There was supposedly a kill switch integrated in the worm by the creators that someone found while studying it. It just pinged an unregistered domain and if it got a response the binary closed. So that guy just registered the domain and this virus is no longer a threat.
