I'm no expert, but there can only ever be 21M bitcoins and it takes computer power to "mine" them. I think there's about 16M in existence now.

Mostly bought chinkshit with it. Turning a minor profit of zcash mining on a single 280X, but it's slow going. Had 2 bitcoins back when the faucet dispenced full bitcoins, but then due to a hard drive crash, and there being no good web wallets at the time, lost them :(

well they can technically be traced
you see, all transactions are publicly available (thats the concept of a distributed ledger)
if you sell something illegal and receive bitcoin for it, the transaction is clearly visible. Now, if you ever want to transform those bitcoins into real money, you'll end up giving those bitcoins to someone in exchange for money (a person or a bank).
after and during the transaction, that person or bank will know that it comes from the same address which was involved in those illegal activities
this is exactly the problem that the maker of WannaCry encryption virus is facing. its almost impossible to make those bitcoins he received uncoupled from his address, so its almost impossible to turn them back into real money
