DAE aphex twin avril 14th?
to the guy who recommended Harold Budd--thank you!
I listened to this today: youtube.com
I'm in love with pic related's synergy of minimalism or avant folk but can't find anything remotely similar. Any recommendations?
Does Ambient belong here? I need good Ambient recs (I've heard Eno already), and also some ambient pop, so far I've listened to Insides - Euphoria and AIR - Talkie Walkie. pls help
Charlemagne Palestine's Strumming Music is pretty good
Mount Eerie, sometimes
Steve Roach
Harold Budd
Aphex Twin (even if he is a meme)
Tangerine Dream
Boards of Canada
Tim Hecker
Fripp and Eno
Thanks Man, I'll definetly give it a listen
On Mount Eerie, check out Sauna specifically.
>Phillip Glass
Einstein on the Beach
>John Adams
Phrygian Gates
>Steve Reich
Electric Counterpoint
>Terry Riley
In C (Shanghai Film Orchestra)
>not part of the late 20th century minimalism movement but I like it a lot and it's similar enough so I'm posting it anyway
Colin McPhee: Tabuh-tabuhan
for Adams and Riley I prefer Nixon In China and A Rainbow In Curved Air respectively
Reminder that Minimalism only applies to repetition-based music from 1965-1970 in New York.
Everything afterwards is nebulously called "Post-Minimalism."
>also not part of the movement but it's also very similar and most likely based off of Riley
Manuel Gottsching: Inventions for Electric Guitar
thats pretty reductive, and not in a positive way i think
It's the truth. Minimalism doesn't apply to inuititive melodic developments in Drumming, MF18M, Einstein, etc
It is rather like punk in the sense that it is almost a dead end from the start. Punk had to diversify in to post-punk, pop punk etc. to stay relevant and fresh, and minimalism needed to do the same. Not sure Glass got the memo though as his recent operas have been pretty uncreative.
Ingram Marshall is minimalist/post-minimalist that is worth hearing too.
youtube.com
yes it does.
repetition does not box out intuition nor melody
Did you read my post kid
Intuitive melodic development is what happens in MF18M where you have a less organized approach to the form, more based on appealing additive rhythms that recede into drones and whatnot
It has nothing to do with insulting Minimalism, I love it. But the facts are facts.
Oh even without your trip you can shitpost nonsense.
you a chock a block full of assumptions, little guy.
when john cage repeats that he has nothing to say and that he is saying it, the work is both a rejection of say intuition (by having nothing to say) and via a repetitive or gridded structure and its also entirely based on a personal intuition in that anything at all was chosen as the initial piece used for development.
why dont you go debate sub-genres somewhere
a philosophy aint a format
bump
hi, bump!
>when john cage repeats that he has nothing to say and that he is saying it
John Cage himself would slap you for asserting this, a "misuse of the language"

Minimalism and the american school of academic music are a fucking joke. Padding the pushup bra of flat-chested lack of talent with semi-coherent dialectics that opened the gates for any hack who wants to garner fame as an artistic "genius"
you wut m8?
Yeah that's why they were key to European musical progress too
seriously no one remembers the point where Cage and Feldman pre-empted both Boulez and Stockhausen
none of us were there

is this the drone GOAT?
Gonna have to listen to it, but so far pic related is the best drone I've heard.
the two seem like the extremes of a spectrum, one exploring extremely intense high pitched microtonal harmonies and the other explores extreme bass timbres. i prefer the first one tho
yes, this is some damn good drone
