me too user

Nobody's stopping you. You can fucking do it. Start out directing videos for struggle rappers and go from there.

I believe in you

I just want to make porn with a plot...

Not softcore porn, but hardcore porn, with more plot then "interview with a pornstar"

I'm stopping them.

Go to films

no one cares about that anymore. people just want a easy to understand premise and a quick nut

>wanted to be an actor for the past few years
>or maybe a director as well, or a screen writer, editor, something in the movie/tv making business
>not for the fame or money, just becuase I think the process is interesting and I want to have a career thats fun
>never did theater when I was a kid, highschool theater was cringy and I sure as shit am not going to college for that
>getting a job lined up that im excited for, but still hoping I can join and acting group on the side and see where it goes
>everyday I worry im making the wrong choices and im never going to get anywhere that I want
/blog

I like a decent story with pron, but I dont want a fucking lord of the rings marathon to get there. Also the acting, a bitch over exaggerating her expressions or reactions is an instant turn off, sometimes subtly is sexier

Check the catalog faggot

I want to be a massage specialist for actresses and female athletes but dont know how to do that without being a creep

You've got about the same odds as winning the lottery.

I would agree with this if he said he wants to win an Oscar or gross a billion dollars. Being a director isn't all that ambitious

everyday I worry im making the wrong choices

You are. Pursue a real career. Keep it up and your ridiculous dream will be dead by the time youre 30, and by the time you're 40 you'll be straight up miserable.

It sure is. Even directing commercials is a brutal business, and you pretty much have to be born wealthy to do it.

I'm 31 and this describes me pretty aptly. I still hold some hope but I don't even do anything to contribute to moving towards a career in film anymore. In hate myself and my life intensely and will be stupefied if I haven't killed myself by the time I turn 40.

Then go out there and make it happen!!

I'm 40. I ran into a guy I know who moved to LA to be an actor when we were 18 the other day when I was home visting family. He's living back home, has two kids, is broke, and about 100 lbs overweight.

Why do idiots buy into this? The odds are probably worse than making it as a pro athlete.

>tfw just want to be a good storywriter (novels or movies, idc)
>but I'm dumb and uncreative and I've never done anything interesting so I can't write about anything interesting

Another meme career. You've got about a good of chance of making a living as a novelist in 2016 as you do selling spittoons.

I don't want to do it for the money or for the fame, I just legitimately like sci-fi.

get a camera and direct something. don't tell me it's impossible because there are plenty of people with careers as directors right now had no training or budget when they made their first film.

Your motive is irrelevant tbqh. Odds are the same.

It's pretty impossible. How many people do you think are making a decent living working as a director in the US? How many are in the NBA?

Wake up.

>film shitty takes of your neighborhood
>film some takes of flowers or landscapez
>film some take of indoors centered
>film yourself sitting on your bed staring outside your window smoking a cigarette
>put all takes randomly
>sell it to some wealthy wanna be hipster producer

There you go champ.

>sell it to some wealthy wanna be hipster producer

I think you mean:

>get 35 views on YouTube

I'd be happy being a stagehand/assistant on a major kino

How many people tried to be Directors vs how many tried to be in the NBA? all these never made it stories are from people who gave up or were never serious about the profession. NBA is inherent ability though and something your born with and isn't comparable

>thinking directing is all features
I work freelance, and most directors I know work for production companies, making training videos and commercials and the like.

Then there's those that work for TV channels, sports stadiums, websites, etc. etc.

Moviemaking is a tiny part of video production as an industry. There's enough jobs out there for those who are trained and skilled to make a perfectly fine living in the field.

Some fat deviantart cunt got published for her YA crap when I was in HS, so I'll take my chances

PKD wasn't rich either

At least athletics are a meritocracy.

In the filim industry you'll be competing with the children of the wealthy who can afford to work for free or close to nothing for literally years, as well as people with deep family connections in the industry already.

But keep believing in dreams. It's no skin off my nose.

Reminder Christopher Noland made It follows for 6000

Scorsese went door to door to fund Who's The Knockin on My Door

stop making excuses that if you weren't born rich you'll never make it. Be good and someone will notice.

>implying money matters

top kek that's why you'll never make it

I don't. I live in NYC and know a lot of people in the industry.

It's a tough mostly bullshit industry on every level. I literally know a guy who directs instructional videos.

He's 42 has a kid and still rents.

Have fun.

Well this is in no way scientific but according to boxofficemojo in the last 365 days 378 movies have made over 100k in the US. Let's assume that's 378 people making their living as directors.

And here's an article declaring that 500 scripted shows and 71 netflix originals are coming next year.

vox.com/2016/8/10/12413968/peak-tv-500-shows-john-landgraf

Generally each show has multiple episodes and multiple directors and sure there's crossover of directors between the shows but can we agree that there are probably at least 500 people getting paid to direct tv episodes?

Hell that's just scripted tv though. How many reality shows, talk shows, court shows, news programs, game shows, etc. are there out there? They all need directors.

But people also get paid to direct commercials, and web series, and corporate videos, etc.

Can we agree that there at least 1000 people in America making their livings as a director? And that is conservative. How many are in the NBA? 13 players across 30 teams so 390. You've got a much better shot making a living as a director.

Make something that proves you're competent and you can get paid to direct shit. Sure you might be directing Wheel Of Fortune but it's better than a nine to five.

99 percent of nyc rents

Nigga plz. Stop memeing. Rent cost money no matter your 'philosophy'.

literally nothing wrong with renting you materialistic baby boomer

It's more like 70% And dude is the only guy in our social circle who rents.

Gen X. And when you have a 200k education, yeah there is.

I also live in NYC and know a lot of people in the industry. They're not rich, but they're not starving either.

>I literally know a guy who directs instructional videos.

What's wrong with that? Dude's making a living, not everyone needs to be fellated with hundred million dollar budgets to do what they enjoy.

Where you at faggot? Come up to the BX and I'll fuck your shit up.

Fuckoff. You've never brainstormed before. You've never sat down and taken the time with a pencil and paper to actually write out 100 ideas.

davidbordwell.net/blog/2007/09/13/the-magic-number-30-give-or-take-4/

we're all behind but we've got some time left

except for the mid-30's and over fags, but they're on Sup Forums in their mid-30's and over, so they already know it's too late

He's not making a living though. He's literally still borrowing money from his parents. Again, he's 42.

Just letting these kids not what the deal really is.

nah its never too late. think of why people dont get good until their 30s

10+ years of honing their craft

If you start at 30 you'll get good in your 40s.

>Come up to the BX

idk if this is the thread but how do I move to LA from Canada. how hard is getting a green card

Nigga they make more movies in Canada than LA for tax purposes. Go to Toronto or Vancouver and become a PA and make connections.

Gay marriage is legal in Cali. Sell that boipucci.

This is why I watch incest porn

Then why wouldn't he live out in CT or NJ? Or shit, even like a bit upstate. The commute wouldn't be too awful.

The people I work with who don't rent in-city own out there. That sounds more like a his fault thing than a reasonable total condemnation of the industry.

>Just letting these kids not what the deal really is
The deal really is that there's basically no chance you'll make it as a blockbuster director who gets his dick sucked by models, but also that you won't starve to death while working 80 hours a week. There is a reasonable middle ground for those who legitimately care about video production, especially considering the possibilities of internal specialization that exist.

Sorry I can't suck daddy's dick and live out in Williamsburg with the rest of the art student dropouts.

>if you haven't directed a feature-length Hollywood picture by the time you're 35, you probably never will.

Tfw 32 in 7 months and never even made a short film.
T-there's still hope for me, r-right?

I generally agree with this but as that Bordwell article highlights the numbers are stacked against them. Not a lot of examples to support the hypothesis in modern film.

Thats waht malik did for tree of life, the fucking hack

>you won't starve to death while working 80 hours a week.
you could say the same about Taco Bell or digging ditches.

>who legitimately care about video production,

Why would anyone care about instructional videos? It's just a paycheck at that point. (and a shitty unreliable one)

>I dont want a fucking lord of the rings marathon to get there.

Why not? honestly that sounds pretty satisfying if it was done well enough.

>you could say the same about Taco Bell or digging ditches.
Nothing interests me about Taco Bell or digging ditches. Also, the weeks I've actually worked 80 hours, I've put away much, much more than just working minimum wage.

>Why would anyone care about instructional videos? It's just a paycheck at that point. (and a shitty unreliable one)
For me, it's about working in a field I love with skills I've gained. Sure, I've had shit gigs, but there's not a single job that's 100% glamorous or wonderful or absolutely perfect. You've gotta roll with the punches.

You're 42 year old friend might've fucked something up down the line, what with not saving money and having a kid, but I know people much younger who've bought nice places for themselves and live fine.

That one person you know who's obviously a disaster doesn't equate everyone who works a particular field.

>tfw i give good massages but nobody wants me to give them one because i'm ugly

how the fuck does someone even make it
its impossible, in all the art fields
how did some memer like lynch make it

I'd just like to work on a movie in some way.

Correlation does not equal causation.
Just because there aren't a lot of people who start filmmaking relatively late in their lives it doesn't mean that just because you start out late you have less chance of succeeding.

test

I directed a movie in my head last night when I was asleep. It was about a man called Lazy Jack who served in the Vietnam war. He saved a young boy from being killed by his comrades and shot some of them in process. He had to escape, and then he and the boy settled on the border of USA and Canada. Jack became a lumberjack, who bred dogs. There were big mountains and pine forest as far as the eye could see. The lived in a small house in the hinterland.

Before this the dream had been from Jack's perspective, but now from the boy's. The dream was a little bit blurry after that, but the boy grew up and there was some conflict with the neighbour, whom the boy decided to kill before he could kill him. In one scene wolves (although they looked more like foxes) attacked the dogs, and the boy had to fight them off with a piece wood. The last scene was the boy jumping in a green Toyota Hilux with one of the dogs and a rifle and driving like crazy.

It was a 10/10 kino. Pic is what Lazy Jack looked like.

You will never be a director. You will never be a respected individual in the film industry or community.

I am just being honest. It's fact.

Some of you moping around saying you wanna help make movies even if it's a minor role. Go out and apply! There's so much cash flow in this business that people are always hiring. You'll get what you want if you REALLY want it that bad. You just have to trust me .
>Scorsese went door to door to fund Who's The Knockin on My Door
Poetry.

I have this idea for a horror movie based off a green text I read here. It'd probably only work as a short film.

That's actually really interesting. Mind if i save this in my phone for later? Maybe I'll do some indie short film like this one day and you'll feel good inside kek

So get off your lazy ass and do it you faggot bitch.
Literally anyone can do it.
Ed Wood, Uwe Boll, Michael Bay, etc, etc.
With modern technology it's easier than ever.
You can literally make a movie on your fucking phone, jackass.
Quit being a lazy shit and do what you want to do.
Faggot.

By all means do. It's not like my dreams are copyrighted or anything.

Cool man. If i do anything with it ill probably change the setting up a bit. Might be more interesting if he stays in Asia, and more realistic. How would he get back to North America after killing his own men?

He hiked to Japan and travelled from there. It isn't realistic, but dreams seldom are.
