although I'm the above bass user with no formal training it's good to at least know the fundamentals. whether you obey them or not is really up to you. music is art and you can do whatever the fuck you want. but knowing the fundamentals lets you understand WHAT you're doing and at least knowing your chords/notes helps you play with new people. I thought about getting a fretless because I started on a really shitty Chinese-made Davison and the frets were sharp as fuck and tore up my fingers once I got my Fender I didn't have a problem anymore

you know what the two worst guitar feelings are? 1. forgetting a specific technique; i just sat down and couldnt tremolo pick like i used to. 2. getting inspired to play by a specific artist, picking up your guitar, and realizing there is very very little you can do originally. ive been listening to a lot of gorguts and deathspell omega and i just have no clue what theyre doing. i cant really take in anothers music and synthesize it into something original. i feel like quitting.
