I have a friend who believes the overall quality of music released in the past decade has declined (he's not militant about this belief, he just sucks at finding good music). Who are some artists primarily active in the past few years that I can show him to prove him wrong? I'm down for any individual album or track recommendations as well. Any genre will do as long as it's legitimately some of your favorite music.

I'd describe his taste as "eclectic normie." He's into a wide variety of stuff but nothing extreme (ex. noise) and nothing beyond the surface level of any genre.

All four of my favorites have put out new albums in the last year or two, and they're all fantastic.

1. Modest Mouse – Strangers To Ourselves.
2. PJ Harvey – The Hope Six Demolition Project.
3. Radiohead – A Moon Shaped Pool.
4. The Flaming Lips – Oczy Mlody.

This right here. And part of the problem is the sheer volume of music being released now because standards have declined and the fact that you can make something that sounds roughly as good as top-level stuff from the '60s from the comfort of your own home. So you still get the occasional amazing work but it's drowned in a sea of mediocrity and harder to find.

Reminder that both AnCo and Swans have been in the top 40 at one point in time.
For albums at least, I know that "my girls" made it in Australia though.

That's because music is targeted towards children now. That's what youth culture is. It's been like that since the '60s. When culture will stop revolving around the youth, the quality of art will go upward.

Its actually a pretty mediocre list and is indicative of the bad taste of people who insist on proving lewronggeneration wrong.

I'll never understand why this is the case. In my experience, most young people and teenagers don't pay for their music and are the demographic with the least disposable income. I thought (((record companies))) are all about profit making, which is partly why pop music have become so shitty and formulaic. It doesn't make financial sense to target the demographic least likely to pay for music.
