Making out of the war without scars physical or mental was obviously the best outcome and those who managed it were fortunate.
Those who died in WW1 were remembered as heroes and venerated, those who were wounded were given attention and the best medical attention available at the time (reconstructive surgeries, physical therapies, etc.) However, if you succumbed to shell shock/PTSD then there wasn't much done. At best you would be given some treatment or kept sedated, at worst you would be committed to an asylum or cast away by a society overall that didn't understand the condition at the time.
