What are some bands that made it big in Britain but failed to majorly cross over (or in the Manics' case cross over at all) to the States?

Pretty much every Britpop band

every uk band/artist tbqh

>beatles

Blur

I guess XTC is one, even though a cover of one of their songs is prominently featured in a movie every real American has seen multiple times.

Yup. It's called britpop because no one else wanted it.

don't they all live in america?

XTC had some success in Britain, but they were never extremely successful. They only had 1 album and 1 single ever break the top 10. They were definitely more successful there though.

1. The Kinks
2. Blur
3. The Stone Roses

This

Suede
MSP
The Verve
Mansun
Pulp
Starsailor
& countless others

But then you had bands like Oasis that managed to find success. Britpop was a cultural thing though, so it didn't make sense to many Americans.

What are some British bands that were more successful in US than UK?

The only one I can think of is Bush

This. They were a one-hit-wonder in America, but in Britain they were as big as Oasis, and both were bigger than Radiohead.

That's strange. I've always been under the impression that they were a household name in England. I've watched documentaries where Andy Partridge is treated like a living god. Apparently they've charted higher in the US than they ever did in the UK, even though most Americans have no idea who they are.

Two hit wonder

My personal rankings for all MSP albums:

1. The Holy Bible
2. Everything Must Go
3. Lifeblood
4. This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
5. Know Your Enemy
6. Journal for Plague Lovers
7. Send Away the Tigers
8. Gold Against the Soul
9. Generation Terrorists
10. Rewind the Film
11. Postcards from a Young Man
12. Futurology

Biggest Britpop bands in America:

1. Spice Girls
2. Oasis
3. Coldplay
4. Bush
5. Radiohead

That's it. That's all the British crossover bands for the last 30 years.

Yes comes to mind. Granted, they were just as big in the UK but they sold a lot more in the US, especially when they moved there.

Is this a sick joke?

I'm talking out of turn here because I can't possibly know what the scene is over in the UK.

Pink Floyd, which I know they're huge everywhere but fucking gigantic in the states. I'm sure they're enormous in the UK too but I dunno how to quantify that. Pretty much everyone listened to Floyd here in the states until the 2000s generation came and they're considered top 10.

Ozzy
AC/DC - shut up they count. Upside UK is still the UK

Clapton?
Bowie
Zeppelin?

One and a half. Girls and Boys was only played on college radio stations. Song 2 was the hit, played in stadiums during handegg and during truck commercials.

I still can't believe that Bush is British. It blew my mind when I found out.

No he's not joking. Most people here don't know who the fuck the stone roses are, woo-hoo: the band, and the kinks are known by a niche music genre

Zepp was huge in its homeland but their sound was so deeply rooted in American music, most forget it's British at all. They are an American icon.

>What is Radiohead

>the kinks are known by a niche music genre

Then explain why several of their singles are staples of American classic rock radio in every city in America?

The Kinks were banned from the US for five years. They were nowhere near as popular in the US as they were in the UK, and in the US, they were not as popular as the Beatles, The Rolling Stones or The Who.

Interesting article. It clarifies nothing, while leaving everything up to the imagination, in the Kinks' favor.

They did have enough fairly successful singles to be fairly relevant in the UK, and most of a certain age probably remember them a bit. I think Partridge and the band in general is more renowned amongst music fans than they are with the public at large.

Not Britpop

Porcupine Tree

flock of seagulls
most 70s blues rock bands
new order?
i know right. i think their debut was decent and like some of their other songs are decent. however, most of the time they were just another boring, shitty, post grunge band, so i assumed they were canadian for years.

What about US bands that are more popular in the UK? I can't think of any.

The Killers maybe

Every Beach Boys album from Party! to Holland charted higher (often much higher) in the UK than USA
Scott Walker
Jimi Hendrix

The Libertines never come to the U.S.

Kaiser Chiefs

Almost every metal band from the UK like Iron Maiden or Paradise Lost is more popular in America and the rest of Europe than UK

>From Britain
>Make pop music
>Not britpop

Wat

semisonic
it's easier to chart higher in the uk, but the beach boys had more number ones in the us and more hits in general

>tfw Canadian
>Manic Street Preachers are my favourite band
>Nobody has heard of them
