I don't really see a need unless you're talking an Edge of Tomorrow-type adaptation, but the time-loop concept works on its own, where the core of Evangelion was kind of a product of the climate of anime at the time.
Mind you, I'd probably watch a western Evangelion-esque movie based on comic book heroes, given how ubiquitous they are these days. I guess Chronicle was kind of like that, crossed with Akira.
