This is

No the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack is better

nah it's gotta a Miles Davis or Charles Mingus album

Ascension is great stuff but it's too derivative to be considered peak of anything. Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor both produced better Free Jazz

Listen to this.

>too derivative
Elaborate.

No, this is

Yes, it is objectively the greatest piece of music of the 20th century

not him but Ascension is just free jazz by john coltrane with a sprinkle of Black Saint

the peak of jazz would ideally be something that is firmly jazz. Ascension is too far from mainline jazz to overlook the entire genre.

here's a guy who has heard neither album. or hasn't spent enough time with them to comment

No, him playing with Thelonious was (as far as Coltrane records go)

No

Inb4 hurr durr jazz fusion isn't jazz

Experimental Big Band doesn't equal Black Saint at all.

I kinda agree with this that album is absolutely killer. Probably some of the best soloing I've ever heard.

And they had great chemistry but Coltrane sounds good playing with anybody

jazz fusion is jazz. but you just posted a hipster pitchfork friendly shit band.

ok maybe not black saint but what does ascension have to offer that isnt "ambitious free jazz" which is something free jazz already did, genuinely curious

also sorry I meant Free jazz by Ornette Coleman

what is this

>Pitchfork friendly
What

And Snarky Puppy has some of the best instrumentalists active in the jazz scene right now

I see. I don't fully understand your question tho.

Ascension was probably a first in terms of orchestration and scale, but isn't as compositionally strong as stuff like Free Jazz or some of Cecil Taylor's work. It's a bit too much soloing around tones for me which is kinda the limit of Coltrane's compositional style.

>And Snarky Puppy has some of the best instrumentalists active in the jazz scene right now
No no no

the instrumental you posted just doesn't seem to have much soul - it seems very clean and structured - every instrument has its solo bit and they never seem to clash and talk to each other
for such a big (big) band there's a surprising lack of things going on
fusion doesn't have to be this tame

wow.
that is boring.
anything actively calling itself 'snarky' tends to be somewhat whack

I disdain Coltrane on soprano.. And most free jazz all together. Trane played much better when he was with miles.

Fair

no, meditations is.

>Implying
But that's not Machine Gun.

sun ship is amazing. really got into the more 'free' styles of jazz music.

>best instrumentalists active in the jazz scene right now
get out

Memechine gun.

Is this album a meme? It fucking sounds like what you think hell looks like.

tfw you get fucking destroyed by your wife

sanders was better than coltrane, idk about Alice but Transcendence is better than that album so maybe

Oh shit I'll have to check that one out, thanks man
