Is it just me or does it really seem like normies use "cinematography" to mean "filmmaking"?

Cinematography is only one facet, a specific technical one, of filmmaking.

Might be.
I mean cinematography though.
Filmmaking is too wideranging.

this, filmmaking is the culmination of actors, scenery, dialogue, and plot. Cinematography refers to the shot itself

Every Frame a Painting can be a good entry to develop an eye and understand certain shots:

Enjoying the work of Chinese cinematographers recently. Pic related is Zhao Fei from The Emperor and the Assassin (1998).

Other great Chinese cinematographers:

Zhang Yimou
Gu Changwei
Christopher Doyle

...

I remember someone telling me about a documentary that is a must see for everyone interested in the topic. But for the the life of me I can't remember how it was called.
Someone have an idea what it might be?

I think I know. Is it Visions of Light (1992)?
imdb.com/title/tt0105764/

Might actually be.
Will check it out nonetheless.
Thank you, user.

Great thread, that is going 404 with 20 replies.

Help me keeping it alive, user.

The book "Five C's of Cinematography" is also essential.
There was another one that gets an updated release every few years. Forgot the title, though.

everybody go check out Cinematography Database on youtube

an actual director of photography explaining and showing practically what cinematography is and how it's done

I will shill him forever

Frankly my favorite cinematography is that of Yasujiro Ozu. Camera never moves. Instead people walk into it and stay in focus until the cut. Very fascinating to look at.

Also here's a chiaroscuro cinematography bump.

Most people, in fact the majority of people here on Sup Forums and other places where people are supposed to know about film, don't seem to know or understand what is entailed or meant by cinematography.

The easiest way to understand is to simply think of it as photography + moving pictures; it is essentially moving picture photography, and that's it.

It's so misused because when the common person comments on a film they look for a word that describes aspects of the film which they cannot put into words or articulate further on, which is why you hear things like "good cinematography", or "beautiful cinematography" even though those statements are pretty meaningless when you think about it. The shots taken can be beautiful or "pretty", but the cinematography itself cannot, because that makes no sense.

Like most people aren't even aware that a Cinematographer actually spends all time on set setting lights and working with a gaffer (onset electrician).

Not like any of this really matters though, but I guess it is good for a few laughs. Just browse through any /lbg/ thread where they attempt to discuss cinematography... you'd be surprised how stupid that lot is.

Thanks user, that one is new for me.

Sounds interesting, gonna check this one out.
