This, except I actually thought that the panels used to be his strongest segment because he was able to actually talk around people informally well and it all used to feel organic. As time went on, you can tell he lost enthusiasm because he was talking with the same handful of people every single night. Even though he tried to play off the Bill Nye fiasco, it's obvious it deeply hurt him and he never fully recovered. Now instead of the show salvaging itself in the last third he just sucked the entire time and it wasn't fun to watch.
I think everyone thought of it as a stepping stone to greater things rather than something to be proud of. One of the producers constantly shoved his face into the show for a reason.
