The problem with stop motion is that it's so niche now that it strikes normal people as pretentious. They want to take their kids to a fun animated movie, not some art-house piece. Laika makes movies for families, but the art form has a stigma.

This. It doesnt really look like stop motion anymore since paranorman. This has the smoothest animation I've seen. Only problem kubo has is there isn't enough super cute/funny/annoying characters in it like Olaf or a minion or anything else equally stupid. It's too good to attract a large crowd.

I admittedly haven't seen the new one but the other movies all had some glaring imperfections and the writing was just weak. There were some good elements not typically seen in children's movies (like Coraline just having to accept her status quo and Paranorman's moral essentially being "get over it") but the movies just have a fundamental lack of charm.

The writing for the lead in was really good. Everything after the skeleton fight was 2/10. Tragic really.
