For me as a non-American living in Britain whenever I've tuned into an American reality show or sitcom, I can't help but feel almost viscerally repulsed by the overall falseness of the production. I mean it's typical of the entire cast to be sporting perfectly sleek, coiffed hair, full makeup, even during scenes where a character is waking up in the morning. Their teeth are unnaturally straight and white, almost gleaming, none of them appear to be suffering from a weight problem, be it underweight or overweight, unless a character fits into the token fat guy model. It's just so unnatural. In Britain for example, actors are generally selected based on merit of their ability, but for America the actors appear to be selected purely on their physical appearance regardless of how good or bad their acting is (I feel a lot of this has contributed to people saying Britain is an island filled with uggos, whilst partially accurate, it's more that we select average people to mirror the reality of our average society).
This is especially compounded when you see comparisons between British shows that have been remade in the US, i.e. Shameless, Skins, The I.T. Crowd (although that never took off), Being Human. Being Human especially, part of what made it so good was the awkwardness in which it presented itself, which was that of a mirror of typical British life featuring typical British people (image related is an campaign comparison, UK on top, US on the bottom). I mean the protagonist was some dumpy, 4-eyed, dumbo-eared fucker, a totally accurate portrayal of average citizens encountering unnatural occurrences. The US actors all look like they model for catalogues on the side.
So my question to Americans is, how do you feel about this exactly? Is it something are can actively notice and recognise too, or have you become too acclimatised to it? Why do you believe American productions force this irregular portrayal of reality?
One possibility is that Americans are just that much more attractive than you fucked-toothed brits.
In all seriousness though, it really depends on the show. The US Office, for instance, has actors on the same level of attractiveness as the UK one.
I can't speak for the others, but I feel like Being Human cast attractive actors and did your aforementioned things because of the success of shows like True Blood, Vampire Dairies, Twilight, etc. The demographic they were aiming for was clearly tween/teenage girls, and this appeals to them.
Adam Cox
>fuck-toothed Brits
Are you aware that the UK actually has better dental hygiene than the US? That's a fact.
Joshua Roberts
British people are just a lot uglier than their American counterparts.
Nathan Jackson
You're obviously baiting for retarded replies like these but I genuinely think it's because America's culture of showbusiness has become such a hollow shell of its former self where production is now almost entirely dictated by marketing gurus with demographic charts telling the studios what it is that 'people really want'.
It's been going on for so long now that people have been pretty much hoodwinked by this shit and are actually eager to consume terrible media like generic capeshit, cheesy derivative sitcoms, and plastic pop music.
All us normal folks can do these days is hope to glean a few good shows, a few good films, and a few good albums from the shitpile year by year to sustain our actual real interest in these forms of media. I mean, what can you say -- that's fucking America for you: when a business becomes so streamlined it inevitably becomes soulless.
Jack Robinson
>That's a fact. Incorrect.
Christian Diaz
I don't watch too much british tv. The last british show that I watched was Doc Martin. They're all good actors, but I feel like they deliberately selected the ugliest actors imaginable in that show. Why is this a thing, OP?
Carter James
this is why most people find brit tv to be GOAT tier unless you are underage.
It's hard to take american crime drama seriously when you have 2 supermodel cops investigating the murder of a supermodel corpse by one supermodel bad guy.
Leo Martinez
We want it that way. We don't wanna see normal people. We want perfect examples of man/woman. To use unattractive people makes the unattractive people irl feel made fun of. There are only certain types we allow ourselves to belittle, fats are one example.
That's a statistical lie, you can google it if you'd like.
Eli Myers
It is actually true, healthiest in Europe too. Doesn't make them any straighter like...

Actually in a nationwide study concluded about 3 years ago they found that those of the UK actually have a much lower incidence of cavities overall than the US.

No, kid.
Levi Phillips
Is there a reason why British people are so ugly compared to regular white people?
Like scientifically?
Connor Price
The thing you don't seem to realize, the UK is doing the exact same thing. The're just ugly and have shit taste.
>In Britain for example, actors are generally selected based on merit of their ability LOL now THAT is funnier anything you brits call """"""comedy"""""""
Robert Hernandez
Thats because they have so many gaps in tgeir teetg that nothing gets stuck between them.
Jonathan Flores
Post this "study".
Bentley Morgan
Casting works differently in each country.
In Britain, they look for the best actors, with appearances that will suit the role.
In the US, they try to cast the hottest people they can find, even if they can't act for shit, because they know people will watch it just to see attractive people.
It doesn't help that the US doesn't have the theatre culture that Britain has. Most British actors started in theatre, and are better trained in theatre acting. Many American actors, however, got into acting to be famous and make money, with many of them never setting foot on stage.
Nathaniel Clark
We don't all want it that way. What you're talking about is the typical vapid escapist bullshit that I fucking hate with the passion of a thousand burning galaxies.
Gavin White
>scientifically? Inbreeding due to a relatively small population contained on an island.
>Results The mean number of missing teeth was significantly higher in the US (7.31 (standard error 0.15)) than in England (6.97 (0.09)), while oral impacts were higher in England. There was evidence of significant social gradients in oral health in both countries, although differences in oral health by socioeconomic position varied according to the oral health measure used. Consistently higher RII and SII values were found in the US than in England, particularly for self rated oral health. RII estimates for self rated oral health by education were 3.67 (95% confidence interval 3.23 to 4.17) in the US and 1.83 (1.59 to 2.11) in England. In turn, SII values were 42.55 (38.14 to 46.96) in the US and 18.43 (14.01 to 22.85) in England.

Less teeth = less cavities. Not necessarily a good thing.
James Hill
I actually understand your sentiments, OP. I'm not a brit or american.
Adam Taylor
The study also concluded that American's had less teeth on average lol, nice try
Thomas Fisher
Americans live a life of delusion, their entire life they've been led to believe they could become multi millionaires if they just worked hard enough, that they could become famous if they just worked to put out that mixtape or make that indie movie, and now it's through making youtube channels.
Their unhealthy obsession with beauty is another aspect of this delusion.
Benjamin Ramirez
Dunno man. Television is for faggots.

A man with no dreams is a dead man. That's why we landed someone on the moon, win all the olympic medals and have the most powerful economy in the world while Eurocucks and their nanny state will be stuck in the same rut forever.
I mean let's be honest. Several Americans have european ancestry which is really the only reason we subsidize your armies and back up your shitty tourist economy. American guilt is the only reason you guys are still relevant. Asia is catching up with you cucks and pretty soon you'll be in third place if not fourth place underneath the africans.

Because Americans are addicted to the ideal. They won't look at reality as it actually is, and instead of working towards actually fixing problems, they would rather just have glitter thrown in their faces.
Still love you guys dough.

Are you serious kid? An organisation that ranks based on socialist ideals rather than the superior healthcare and technology?
I mean, youre right, but british actors aren't as good as you are making them out to be here.

Why do non Americans care so much what Americans do? Is it hard to understand Americans do things differently than others?
Justin Williams
>Why do you believe American productions force this irregular portrayal of reality?
It's not irregular though for Americans.
The reason you see so many "ugly" British actors is due to a few reasons:
#1. There are much fewer British actors just due to the smaller amount of people on your island. You simply don't have enough good looking people.
#2. Almost every good looking British actor has left for greener pastures AKA the USA. To use a sports analogy, why would a talented actor want to stay in the minors (the UK) when he could get called up to the premier league (USA)? Face reality here, when it comes to TV/Movies, the USA is considered the top of the food chain.
#3. The American shows have mostly "beautiful" people in them cause overall Americans are just good looking. Not all of them, we have areas where the gene pool is tainted much like the Southern UK and Scotland. The average American is just better looking than the average Brit. Like I said earlier, if you do get a good looking Brit, they move out of the UK and come over here to the USA as soon as possible which depletes your already inbred tainted gene pool even more.
Adrian Thompson
It's called jealously.
When you're #1, everyone is trying to find something to complain about you.
Zachary Peterson
The US has more actors by far but the UK has the best actors because we actually active theatre here so ours are better trained.
Carter Jones
Stop showing your ignorance.
Eli Adams
He never said they weren't. Only that your actors cross an ocean to be in America instead.
James Miller
There's more opportunity in America because of the sheer scale of its size and industry, there's no denying that.
It's a legit fact though. You only need to look at all the great British actors, they're all trained in theatre.
Jordan Turner
There is theatre in America.
Eli Nelson
Ofc there is but it's nowhere near the quality nor calibur of British theatre. Tell me some of the great American actors that your theatre has spat out.
Thomas Flores
Tommy Lee Jones, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep, and that's just 5 seconds' thought.
Jaxson Torres

Adam Garcia
I'm naming people whose work I'm most familiar with as an oldfag. but please do feel free to shift the goalposts to suit your criteria.
The fact is you're not entirely wrong. There is a huge amount of disconnect between American film and theater, but to assert that there's no cross-over and no correlation between polished American actors and the American theater is quite simply absurd.
Jose Myers
Who cares about theater? Why go to that when movies exist?/What an outdated concept.
Josiah Walker
>#3. The American shows have mostly "beautiful" people in them cause overall Americans are just good looking.
hi hi hi hi hi, he he he he he, ho ho ho ho ho
Isaac Fisher
TLJ is the only one there that somewhat rivals Brit actors
Chase Carter
I'd disagree. Streep has always been phenomenal and Walken has a lot more range than he's ever afforded opportunity to explore in film. I caught quite a few of his live performances back in the day. It was always jarring to see him getting constantly cast as villainous, "spooky" characters.
Jack Walker
Ugly Betty Syndrome
TV norms are so deeply entrenched that nothing succeeds unless it adheres to them. So the "ugly" girl has to be a qt with a crappy wig and glasses, because genuinely average people on your screen just looks weird

>Shameless, Skins, The I.T. Crowd I don't think the americans actually get the comedy these shows are trying to portray. they are lost in translation. being human for example, the characters are supposed to be dimwitted average pople, not fantastically beautiful people in that bottom picture. Because of that the situation loses it's meaning, the humour would die.
Shameless is the real thing, there is no was for the americans to portray the sitcom in an american setting, even if it was set in the deep south with rednecks, which is the american equivalent of the area shameless is set. So in turn the americans make a mediocre show.
Jose Cox
At least their Inbetweeners was better

>an actual illness would probably make you homeless.
Maybe if you're an idiot who doesn't have insurance.
Wyatt Price
Tv shows and movies are supposed to be ideal representations o ftheir espective contexts and need to prove a point. Europe, although "developed" is very pesimistic and most europeans are utter trash who'd rather be ruled than accept freedom. Americans are the opposite, they are optimistic, they know they can succeed if they work hard and they don't have self-esteem issues, so they can relate to pretty, ideal characters on screen.

In Britain you have a severe shortage of good looking people. Don't act pretentious by thinking all your actors are chosen solely based on merit.
Jordan Thomas
Then why are your teeth so fucked up? Your people are so ugly.
Joseph Jones
No I dunno about that. Look at MacKenzie Crook for example, he is literally like a rat in the show and that's what made is funny. The US equivalent looks quite well groomed with nice hair, he just wears glasses which somehow makes him ugly?
Lucas Lee

Inbreeding.
There's always something...off when I look at a British person's face. At least people find the accents charming in some cases.

And what if you can't afford insurance? In the UK our healthcare doesn't discriminate on income, everybody is equal.
Kevin James is attractive? You have the hots for America Ferrara? Melissa McCarthy really does it for you? I guess you really want to fuck bald Bryan Cranston. Stop talking out of your ass.
